Timeline: Positives & Negatives (13 posts)

  • Who likes the timeline layout? I have it on my personal page which I despise. I find it full of clutter and you can’t find posts. For instance, it was my birthday this past weekend. I had dozens of wishes but I couldn’t find them all.

    Now I see that community/business pages are going to the new format. I think this is going to be a nightmare as well.

    Does anyone have any positives to share?

    Why doesn’t facebook ask their consumers for their opinions and input?

  • Hey @joegill!

    I do like Timeline on my personal profile. I find it useful to have my information organized chronologically and also like the possibility of checking all of my activity since they day I joined Facebook. I found it a bit confusing at first but once you get used to it, I think it’s great.

    As for Timeline for Business and Community Pages…I don’t know. I think the Cover Photo and the way photos are displayed on the profile are great features but I’m having a bit of trouble of finding other advantages as opposed to the current profile layout. I haven’t spent much time thinking about it anyway hehehe

    As with every Facebook change so far, I think we’ll have a bit of a problem in the beginning but then we’ll get the hang of it and see all of the benefits the new changes will bring to our businesses. Plus now we have a community right here, so a lot of heads thinking together. We got nothing to worry about :)

  • i agree, I think  FB would be better off keeping it simple…there really isn’t a plus I can give it…..I don’t like being to negative about it, but it’s just not user friendly (imo)

    @joegill

  • We don’t pay for the services offered by the platform, so why on earth should FB treat us as customers?

    One thing I agree with is the fact that FB goes through changes too often. I think they should stick to one thing once and for all.

  • @joegill There seems to be a certain time during the evolution of a b2c business where the urge to become somehow stylish grows bigger than the search for usability.

    That is, in my opinion, somehow the case with Facebook. I really do prefer the renovated timeline when it comes to graphical matters. I think it is beautiful, I like the use of pictures, the icons, the time”line”, all composed in a subtle color environment – and all at the expense of usability.

    The timeline is less logic than before, function follows form. I find myself working more and more with 3rd party apps and less with the generic fb apps/site.

  • I disagree with you there @cendrinemarrouat. Just because it’s free it doesn’t mean Facebook doesn’t see it’s users as customers. You may not be a customer per se as you’re not paying for the service, but Facebook exists because of its users and their interactions so you can bet they have (some of) our interests at heart.

    Changes will always occur. Even payed for products go through changes and the end users are not asked if they like those or not. That’s why they have beta testers and Facebook has them as well.

    Facebook makes most of their money off of their ads, which are produced by companies and individual users alike, and all of FB’s users are key to all of this working.

  • TIMELINE IS ACTIVE FOR PAGES!! I really love it. I started preparing my clients for the change. The best part is that is renewing itself, the visual part is awesome and it’s a matter of embracing changes and stepping out of the comfort zone. It’s a matter of getting used to it. Now we, as pages, will be able to send private message to users. :-) Prepare yourself, is going to change automatically on March 30th.
    Back to learning process but love my job!

  • One of my friends said it perfectly, “facebook is getting too myspacey”. Look what happened to Myspace, everyone jumped ship. I may focus more on google +. I like simple stupid when it comes to social media.

  • Hear hear Sally @sallymolinaatehorta :)

  • I am not looking forward to their putting the Timeline on our business pages on March 30th … YUCK! I do not mind it for my personal page, but I find nothing wrong with the layout of the pages as they are now … just need more features and filtering capabilities. What is it with Twitter and Facebook … ??? Too many unnecessary updates and not enough “meat & potato” needs addressed!!!

  • Joe, the wise thing to do would be focusing on both. On one hand you can’t (well, shouldn’t) discard the huge user base of Facebook just because you don’t like the way it looks now, and on the other you “need” a Google+ profile associated with your website for search engine ranking purposes.

    @joegill

  • If you don’t pay for a service, you are not a customer. You are just a user or free tenant. Hence, Facebook can do whatever they want — which they have always done, if you really think about it.

    And I don’t think FB is for everyone either. It depends on your field.

  • Now, no one lands on customized landing pages anymore. Just the timeline. Thank you, Facebook for turning into Myspace.
