Timeline for Pages, to switch or not (36 posts)

Topic tags: timeline for pages
  • I’m trying to decide if I should switch now or wait, anyone else wondering when the right time will be?

Part of me wants to switch so I can get ahead of the curve, and have hands on experience so I can pass that knowledge on to my clients. The other part of me wants to wait until Facebook has worked out all the bugs.

So far, there are only two reported - http://developers.facebook.com/bugs

One of them is pretty big, pages that use the fan gate to reveal contests, or content once someone has liked the page are not being refreshed to the fan only content. Which may be leading to some confusion about the new format allowing the fan gate / like gate functionality. Fan gates are allowed, but the default landing has been removed.

    Any thoughts?

  • Hello Scott,

We’re waiting. Early adopters are great, but if we wanted to switch early, we’d have to set up a case, send it to committee, and get approval. It is easier for us to just go “Yep, they forced our hand.”

  • I took the Shortstack Webinar this morning about this and they suggested waiting at least a week so the bugs can be worked out. I’m going to go ahead and start working on mine without publishing because I have a lot of history to put on it (we’ve been in business since 1969).

Then I think I’ll check the status of bugs before I publish.

  • I am waiting. No rush. I want to use my landing pages, til I can’t anymore.

  • i accidentally published mine this morning… but i dont have to be  perfect, since i dont sell facebook   advice..lol….i was just e xperimenting……..  we  did  get a lot of  comments  today on a picture in a post…

  • @scottprock @annfurnivall
Thanks Scott, I am slowly working on my pages anyhow so will keep going forward. I accidently published one of mine this morning but oh well. I will keep working to get it ready. :)

  • Thanks  @jasonreilly @marylarson @tonytaylor @annfurnivall @rebeccacohen ;-)

I’m most likely going to get everything ready, and designed just right. I’ll be thinking of something really creative to help brand my page. I too was on the ShortStack webinar as I have been evaluating the options for third party app creation. I really like how ShortStack is setup, and the prices are very reasonable, especially when bringing on clients.

  • @scottprock

I am going to publish mine as i am not running contests at the moment but would suggest to wait for at least another few days.

Would love to get some feedback on my page?https://www.facebook.com/businessmarketstrategy

  • There are a number of buggy issues such as the page not refreshing when the Like button is hit. All the “big boys” including Mari recommend waiting. This will also give you time to really polish the apps and cover image.

I believe this may set some of us back in marketing our FB enhancement services but have decided to not let it. By that I mean I am going to embrace it and become pro-active in selling clients on how good it is. It can ge really good when we choose to look at the positives of it. The fact is that it’s here and we have no choice.

I am contacting as many businesses as possible to let them know that they have one shot to make a good first impression and a crappy Timeline will do exactly that.

  • I think the new timeline layout sucks.

So many reasons why, I simply can’t believe that FB with all of their talent and collective wisdom can continue to make such HUGE mistakes.

I was forced to change mine just now – reluctantly – and instantly had problems.

The list goes on, bugs etc, etc, etc the page doe not refresh as you are scrolling, you can’t see, or find, important information like ‘likes’ or about so easily blah blah.

    Hate it.

I am trying to work with it as the FB regime forced me.

however, the change is COMPULSORY for everyone else in the coming weeks regardless of this discussion, so start planning for the change.

  • switch after they fix the Like button refresh issue for the new system, or wait till they force you if you have a default landing page tab.

  • HI Guys, we (Antavo Promotion Builder) is prepared for the new adapters – just in case you would want to create promotions to the new timeline, you can do something like this: https://www.facebook.com/antavo/app_284881901569903

  • @scottprock thanks for the initiative to start this important topic. To switch to or not to switch to is the matter of just 30 days only, so personally i feel that we should make a switch asap.. because sooner we switch, more time we get to understand the stuff and more time we get to redesign our fb marketing strategy. However there are couple things that i personally don’t like such as elimination of custom landing page and  not giving access to insight unless page has likes more than 30…But again as i said, we will have no choice after 30th march so better we switch asap and try to understand and get used to things asap.

    Thanks,  @jasonreilly @marylarson @tonytaylor @annfurnivall @rebeccacohen @tracourt @arty @vincentedwards @zsuzsaszab

  • I switched my page yesterday http://www.facebook.com/Time2Mrkt, but I think I will hold off a day or two for my clients.

I just ran across this great article on making the changes http://www.hyperarts.com/blog/facebook-timeline-for-fan-pages-frequently-asked-questions/

  • I’m going to be doing all of my research and writing up thoughts etc next week. Once I’m done I’ll take a look and see if we want to switch now or just wait for it to happen organically. We’ll see! Needless to say, I’ll be hanging out here a LOT.

  • Hello Scott,

I would suggest that go on and apply it now to see what’s new, what you can do now, which is not possible before. Master everything new about Facebook page before your competitors takes their feet ahead of you.

Yesterday i applied it for my own blog page and digging more into new features to see that what’s new and what’s hot to use for my business and till now i found this:

1- Default Landing Pages Are Now Diminished
2-You Can Add Cover Image but Bind By Lots Of Rules.
( Don’t Include Price And Purchase kind of things in your cover images like 40%off, download it now.

Contact information’s such as websites, mail, contact details are intended for your page about section not for page cover section.

Please don’t mention like this page, or share this page and similar thing in your cover image if you want to make your page safe.

Don’t include call to action in you cover pages. )

    Some Good Changes:

1- Now people able to contact you through messages Private. Notification for new message will appear in right side of your admin panel.

2- New admin panel with some good UI and new tweaks.

3-Page Profile Pictures size is minimum 180px.

4 And Page cover size is 315pxX850px.

  • I found several resources and compiled them all into a blog post athttp://time2mrkt.com/facebook/time-for-timeline/

  • I’m waiting until we have to switch on March 30. Hopefully, they’ll have the major bugs worked out by then.

Thanks for sharing your link, Dee @deereinhardt. I look forward to reading your post.

  • Thank you all for the great feedback, I’ll be adding separate replies after this post.

I have decided to make the switch sometime next week, after I get my designs put together with a streamlined strategy. There’s a lot of opportunity with these changes and I’m excited to be part of it.

    … Scott

  • @bertievg The first thing I noticed was the cover image was obviously upsized. In other words you had an image that wasn’t quite 851px wide and it had to be scaled up to fit. This has created an image that has jagged edges and doesn’t look as crisp as it does on your website. My suggestion would be to re-create the image for the wider format, or at least place your graphics into an 851x315px canvas so there’s no upscaling.

    … Scott

  • @tracourt I too will be contacting businesses, at least educating them on what they need to do so they don’t end up panicking at the last minute when the changes are forced upon them.

    … Scott

  • @deereinhardt great cover photo, it speaks about your business while staying with in FB guidelines ;-) and thanks for sharing the resources.

@laurachristianson yes and let’s hope a lot sooner. I don’t see the bugs they have as too big of an issue for FB anyway.

    … Scott

  • @scottprock Thanks Scott, yes i agree i did upsize it but it was just to play around and will definatly sort it out

  • @zsuzsaszab I am checking it out!

  • I just finished publishing the last of our 3 course pages.  What I found with the first was that as soon as a history item was posted, it got attention, so why not publish and add the history in here and there as I go?  The point is for my posts to gain attention, right?  History was gaining attention . . . so I’ll do it slowly and use it to my advantage :)

  • @dedimason great plan Dedi,

I think people are genuinely interested in the history of businesses ad brands they like. Aside from the few things we’re going to miss with the new format, I think Timeline’s advantages outweigh the negatives.

  • I have only just found out about this. I have converted one of my test pages but not yet published. I think I’ll go ahead and publish and see what happens. Does anybody know if the major bugs have been ironed out?

  • Hello all of you!I read most of your posts after spending hours trying to solve all the bugs or misunderstandings I have… It’s great to see all of you participating in helping each other, I hope I will be able to do so soon!

One of the advantages of Facebook was the fact that it was easy to use and intuitive… I find that it’s getting more and more frustrating to understand all the trics, and we can not all spend hours searching for the solutions…
It’s good to be positive about these changes, be an early adopter and educate ourselves and our clients…However, I considered before theses changes that Facebook was an amazing tool to democratize marketing and give people who don’t have the budget of a marketing department to access a great audience without being too intrusive..It is supposed to be an easy tool to use for people who are independent contractors, who are not necessary big companies, but artists or freelances who are not necessary social media geeks.

Simple small example that I am trying to deal with at the moment: if the pictures you have for your cover page doesn’t fit the format…If you don’t know how to reframe this picture yourself with the specific softwares, and if you don’t have friends who can do it for you, you might need to pay for it… Unless the reposition button ends up working and helping us to do so? If a picture is too small or too big for the size of the cover what can we do? And a none professional timeline picture might really affect the first impression….

I am sure we will all get used to these changes, but pointing out the frustrations is also good because I expect Facebook will hear them and improve them…

    Amel

  • @moinshaikh, I totally agree!

@amelderragui, Lujure has a great webinar that explains a lot of the changes and how they impact SMM. I personally switched right away due to the fact I don’t have any promotions going on, yet liked the feel of the pages, since I’m a photographer. Amel, I will also resize any 5 pictures you need just because your a member of this club and what goes around comes around! You can check out my pictures at http://www.facebook.com/VisualEnlightenment to see if you want to take me up on the offer. All the images are mine that I personally took.

@bertievg, I love the carrot cross-section; had to share it on my personal page, then my FB page!

  • @edwardbrown Thanks for your advice! I looked your page, your pictures are great! What a great offer from you, Thank you! If I don’t find a solution for a picture more relevant to my page topic, I will definitely think of you ;-) But I will also think of you if I see that some of my clients need pictures as yours. And yes, the Timeline does make sense even more in your case, visuals enhance it all…

  • Amel, don’t forget to like the page so you can find me :o )

  • On my FB page at http://www.facebook.com/socialsavvynetworks I’m taking a poll on the timelines. Please check it out and click on the polling and of course while your visiting my page  and you find it’s something you can use then don’t forget to “Like” it!

  • @margotproctor, I’ll be interested to see the results from your poll.

  • I’m going to wait another week or two.  I was just about to design a couple of landing pages for myself and client, glad I didn’t.

No rush, and I want to pick up any hints/tidbits before, such as all the great comments on this post.

  • We went ahead and made the switch. Been busting our butts to get our platform Timeline ready and today we actually are. I do have to admit that at first I was a little ticked off about the change, but now I am embracing it. Check out my latest version of hubzeTV where I actually killed Mark Zuckerbergs Facebook page just for you that are kind of sick of them making changes without letting us know a little in advance…

  • A great video on how to convert your pages to the new format is here (from Inbound Zombie)
