Thoughts on the ”humble brag” on Facebook? (6 posts)

Topic tags: bragging, facebook posts
  • Just wanted to find out what people thought about the humble brag on Facebook (or other social sites).  By “humble brag” I mean the posts that are like, “Can’t believe my book is STILL on the NYT Best seller list after 54 weeks”  (FYI, I’m not talking about my book but just giving an example!)

Where does tooting your own horn cross the line?  Would love to hear your thoughts!

  • I do think it is harmless posting “humble brag”, however capitalizing certain words to reflect its importance seem to be bragging to me. Eg. “STILL”

  • i think about this  too….a consultant  suggested we put out that we are   the  best  store ,,,,or  #1…or  the  biggest…..  he was all for it  but it just seemed  too forward  to me…

i like to say  come seee all the  great stuff we have for you….rather than  we have great stuff….or  thank  you all for  coming   rather than  saying there were  800 people  yesterday…..

  • @rif-cornerstone I was just using that as an example, not something I had actually seen but that’s the idea.   But I do think that it’s hard to convey tone in writing.  So if you are talking about an accomplishment it’s hard to get across how you might be saying it in real life.

I think as business owners we have to talk about good things about our store or our business @annfurnivall – I think people who are on there for pure social sometimes get annoyed with that in general – it’s a hard balance because if you are the #1 store, why not say it?

  • lol…id  rather  someone else said it….

  • I think Ann at greenoak is right – it would be better as a testimonial and carry more weight. It’s like the craze that finally burned out with Panda “We guarantee you Page 1 rankings on Google” but you get 100 emails and see 200 ads with that claim, knowing there are only 10 SERPS on page one  - there’s a lot of lying going on thus all their credibility is diminished.
I’m old school Andrea Vahl I think you’re better off collecting your “attagirl” then asking the client to put it in writing with permission to share.
