the 96% question… (8 posts)

  • i hearing a lot that  96%  of   your likes  dont  come  back….can  you follow my  logic   on this and what   do you think?    am i looking at this  wrong?  .my  likes  are mainly organic, not like  exchanges, freebies, etc etc…

my insights  show that   about  1700  unique  people  get my  daily  posts    from my page  {out of about  2500 likes)….. and  a way lower number   go to  my page……  can i assume  that  my daily post    appeared on   the  1700  peoples  timeline  ?   if  so , they saw ,i know it might  have  been  far  down on their timeline,  the  days   picture and   a short sentence…..  and  thats   what i am  trying  for….them   actually going to the page  is nice too…but  just  seeing  the days picture is  my  real goal….

can i assume  that  the  96%  number  , when they say  96 %  dont  come  back,,,, can i assume that this number  comes from  page  view data ?     am i  crazy to think  that  hundreds  got my  message and    dont  actually  go to my  page   all the time,  they just get my  message   in  the  short picture and sentence on their timeline?   i would think  that  a  different   hundred or  200 a  week would  be   going to the  actual page….

this  96%  idea   is  getting around  so  much  , i  really want to understand it..it  seems   very   wierd and misleading to me…why   should we  bother with   working  on facebook if  only  4%  of our  fans  were actually  connected in a good  way with us…? i sure  couldnt  spare the time  for that  low  return….

is  this  wrong?   my  goal is to  show them the picture and   let them  read  a short message from us everyday…. going  to the page  is  just  gravy…

i  get info  from  lots of  places i have liked without   clicking on their page….the  days picture tells  me  a lot…i have always assumed that my  daily post  waas  mainly a nice   short   reminder  that we are here and  a little  view of   what we  have today …

  • @annfurnivall

The “96%” is referring to the number of people that don’t come back to your actual page.  (The percentage isn’t completely accurate as it changes from business to business but it’s more of an average.)  They can, however, still see your posts.  The 1700 unique people you’re seeing in your insights is referring to the number of people that see your posts either through an ad/sponsored story (if you use them), via their feeds or via their friend’s feeds.

  • I think, by default, the settings for users is to ask facebook to send messages in “summary” format, rather than, every time something happens on your page.  I think, this reduces activity awareness on your page… but I think the reason facebook does that by default, is to save their email server.  (If someone else can verify this for me that would be useful).  The problem with that is, the page liker only gets one email at the end of the day, and they dont necessarily want to be bothered reading all the detail of it… and maybe just quickly delete it.  Anyway…. there is a clear difference between a page “viewer”, “liker” and a “conversion” from that viewer (i.e. someone who signs up for a newsletter)… at the end of the day, its a conversion you want to achieve.  “Likers” are good because they help spread the word a little bit.

  • vince i dont  have  conversion…i  have the daily  picture that i hope puts my store on  their  day out list….

if  they actually  are  customers of the store and   enjoy the store   and know about it….  they might not  need to   go  to  my page…but they get my  message  every day…..  does that make sense to anyone?

do you tell your  resturant and  retail  clients  that  96%  dont   see their page again?   isnt it   good   that the resturants customers who liked the  resturant    get  the  days  menu posted on their, the customers,  page  everyday ?  i  get that  from my  favorite  resturant and im not sure i have ever  seen their page…  to me and the resturant im  not  sure the  96%  number is  really important….

@iamconsulting thanks  nicole ,,,i mostly  knew  the parts you  describe….and  glad to hear you say they do  see my posts… if  the 1700 see the posts im  fairly  happy…i dont need  online  conversion at all…i dont even offer it…

..but  does it mean  they dont ever  return  or  maybe    during that week?  maybe   200  come  this  week and a  different  200  come   next  week?   .

…so many  tell me in the store  …i  follow   you on  facebook…i  want  to think that means  they see my  daily posts….

last week   my  reach was  7000…still a mystery….  and im  waiting to see  if  next  week it  goes  straight  down to   the normal  1700 to `2000  range

  • @annfurnivall

It’s possible they never return to your page…it’s possible they all do (but very unlikely).  It really varies.  Since people don’t need to go to your page to see or engage with your posts, they typically don’t, hence the 96%.  The 1700 refers directly to your reach – the number of people that see your posts.

If they follow you on Facebook they may see your posts however it’s possible they may not.  It depends on whether or not they are actively engaging with your posts/page.  It also depends on the engagement level of your posts.  If they haven’t liked or commented on your posts in a few months it’s unlikely they will continue to see them in their feed as the relevance decreases significantly over time.

  • @iamconsulting good,  thats  how i  was hoping it   was….and  how i described it in my opening post….  glad  thats  how  it is!!..i understand  about the  decreasing relevance….thats   what i work on  a lot….  , getting them  to   do something …..

do you see the possible problem  with the number in that    only  4 %  come to the page EVERY WEEK…  wouldnt it  be  a  different 4%  each  measuring period?   and  then adding up to a lot more than  4%  of  your  likers?

also  what  was her  conclusion and  advice  when   putting out this  number?   for local brick and mortars  like me  its probably not too important….for  you who  need  action ON YOUR PAGE  it  sounds  pretty  serious….

if  they  have  quit  geting   the posts  but are still  fans…do  they  still count in the reach?    my  reach is   from  17oo to2000….and  the  actual likers  are  2500….

i just put a  FYI   on my page about this and am  getting lots of   likes in  return…   …. thanks  for  the help…

  • @annfurnivall

The 96% isn’t a real number, more of an average and it doesn’t mean 4% of fans come back to your page a week….it’s 4% come back to your page ever.
if  they  have  quit  geting   the posts  but are still  fans…do  they  still count in the reach?”
No, they would not be included in your reach.  Reach is only people who see a specific post.  Which is why reach is broken down by posts.
You also mentioned your reach is 1700 to 2000 with 2500 likes on your page.  Your reach may not all by fans of your page.  Reach is divided into 3 main categories:

    • Organic – Number of unique people (fans and non-fans) who saw your post in their news feed or on your page.
    • Viral – Number of unique people who saw your post from a friend’s news feed by being shared or liked.
    • Paid – Number of unique people who saw your post because of an ad or sponsored story.
So, it’s possible that let’s say 1000 people are actively engaging with your posts and 700 people are seeing them through your fan’s liking or sharing your post in their news feeds.  Which will explain your larger reach last week.
    Does that make sense?

  • thanks  nicole…im  following  what you are saying…..

.we  cant  believe  that   only  200 people  came  back to  the   page  in a long span of time…so im  remaining  curious about this number.  just in  comments on old pictures  im pretty sure we  would have more than  200…. and  they would  use the page in so many other ways too…to  check hours,  , to  get the  gps  code, to  check when the  next  event is….to get the phone  number..  none of  that is in  the   daily posts….  .  ..

a new weeks  numbers  just  came out and   the  reach went  from 7000 to 5000,,, still  far  from our   long time  average of  2000…maybe  someone really popular   saw  my page last  week  making it  go  viral….  we didnt have any paid  ads…
