Suggestions on Schedule Aps (9 posts)

  • I am about to take a two month, unplugged, vacation.  I have around 23K on my fan page with a fair amount of engagement.  I am contemplating options for posting while I am “unplugged”.

One option is to schedule posts with an app like Hootsuite or crowdbooster.

Am curious as to other people’s experience with these apps – is there a favorite?  Downsides?

I may just close the page to comments as well until I return or have someone manage the page for me.  Just considering options and looking for feedback.

  • I don’t know how much it happens now, but Facebook used to devalue posts make from 3rd party like Hootsuite.  Posts like that were less likely to be on the fan’s feed.  Live posts are so much better anyway.  You’d hate to step back into this in a few months and struggle to regain the engagement you once had.

I would strongly suggest that you have someone handle the posts and comments for you.  You know how it is, out of sight, out of mind.

    Hope the vacation goes well!

  • I use HootSuit and love it.  I know there are many sites that do schedualed postings, not having used other I can’t give you a comparison, but HootSuit is the one I like, I’m used to it and it’s very user friendly — If anyone else thinks something else is better I’m open to suggestions:)

I do not recommend closing off comments, just because you might not be responding personally, doesn’t mean your fans shouldn’t be able to continue the conversation among themselves.   You might get less engagement, but at least the page will still look active.

These are just my opinions, and I hope it helps. Have a great trip!

  • @carlagoddard I use Hootsuite across pages regularly. As  @asearfoss mentioned the appearance on news feeds is typically altered when a 3rd party posting service is used. I use Hootsuite and then go in and post organically within the platforms as well when possible. When I took vacation I had the Hootsuite postings happening and then a colleague posted organically for me the posts I pre-wrote. He also “shared” relevant content from other pages. It worked well for me but it was time consuming to create not just the Hootsuite posts but also the ones he would post while I was out.

  • Hi, with 23K on a fan page my thought would be to hire someone to manage the page. The interaction you have on your fan page has a certain amount of value to it and maintaining that value would be of great importance in my mind.

  • Hi @carlagoddard

@alexandrabriggs and @timothyhealy are in opinion spot on!! Having somebody you know and trust help out, would be the best alternative. You can:

    * Create all the content in advance
    * Write up several answers for the most common questions your audience asks
    * Prepare a couple of crisis-control answers as well
    * Make this person an admin
    * Outline a schedule of posting
    * Set up email reminders so that he/she doesn’t forget to do it, and
    * Make sure you have ‘in case of emergency’ lines open :)

  • @asearfoss @alexandrabriggs

I listened to a Mari Smith webinar recently and she stated that 3rd party service posts are no longer “devalued.” BUT (isn’t there always a but) the “share” link doesn’t show up. This I can vouch for. I use Bufferapp a lot and when I make a post to my fb page using buffer the share link is not present.

  • Thank you everyone for your input.

I have prewritten blogs that will auto post for me during the two months and prerecorded meditations as they are the two largest source of conversation (well until recently I had a picture I posted hit over 1,800 likes and 3,500 shares)  which will be original postings so that portion is covered.  I have a second page with 20 other women as admins (community page) so I will ask if any of them have time to manage my page in addition.

Thank you again for all your input.

  • I am with @asearfoss and everyone else — ask someone to step in as a temporary admin.

Here’s an article with some more information on whether updates pushed out through 3rd party apps like HootSuite suffer from decreased fan visibility (data seem to indicate “yes”):
