Start a new Page or Contact FB Requesting Transfer/Merge (3 posts)

Topic tags: Page change, page merge
  • Hello,
My first post here, really glad I have found this community of like minded social media marketers! After searching through about ten pages and not finding my specific issue I have chosen to start a new topic.

My background: I have several years of recreational social media use, and have recently started my own small business managing social media pages for entry-level companies that are now investing in social media. I would be very appreciative of any responses anyone can give on a problem I have.

Scenario: I recently took over the management of a business page (wines/spirits) that has 2200+ likes (yes, a small number).  Recent rebranding has put in new guidelines around the company name where all the letters must be capitalized. Second, beyond the capitalization issue they wanted the name of the page to change as well as the page username. I have successfully achieved all of the above for them by creating a new page. This page has 2 likes.

The problem though is a) they don’t want to lose the existing 2200 fans b) because the name of the page has changed slightly, a merger of the two pages is not possible, also according to FB, the merge occurs where the small merges into the big.

The Question: What options are available to me? The company has a global trademark on it’s name. Do I put in a request to FB asking for the page with 2200+ likes to be changed to the specific name the company wants, or do I just convince the company that 2200 is a small number and it’s ok to start over?

  • What are the TOS for socialmediaexaminer as it related to questions? Where can I go to create an offer or a promotion to get someone to help me with my query? :)

Perhaps I offer to like the first 5 people on twitter that assist me, and also retweet their general ongoing words of wisdom?

Starting to feel really blogged by it all…

  • Hi @chris-hassell Welcome to the Social Media Examiner Clubs.  Sorry for not getting back to you earlier – I’m at SXSW in Austin.
What I would try and do rather than merge the two pages is to contact Facebook and get a rename for your existing page according to the new branding.  It can take a little bit of time and effort to get through to them but just go to the http://www.facebook.com/help area and go to the Pages and submit a “bug” report.  Upload documentation that shows your new branding.  Hope that helps!

Anyone else go through this process with some words of wisdom?
