Squatting Vanity URL (7 posts)

  • I’m curious to know what the chances are of being successful at having a squatting Facebook page removed that’s using my company’s name as it’s vanity URL? This particular page I’m referring to has zero activity and only one like. We on the other hand are a legitimate company with 55K page likes.

  • Hi Lindsay (@lindsay-kustich),

I’ve had luck with places by proving to the Facebook team that it is our company being referred to.

I did not have much luck with an actual page that someone else started.  (They were defaming us using our own logos and included our name in their URL.  It looked so much like our page that even our employees “liked” it without looking closer at it.)  Facebook actually removed our logos and other images since those are copyrighted but they did not feel that using our name in their URL was copyright infringment.  :(

Hope you have more luck – let us know if you are and what you did.

    Good luck!

    Alicia

  • Have you messaged them and asked them to give it up? You may have already tried it, but I figure it’s worth a shot if you haven’t done so. Good luck! @lindsay-kustich

  • My friend and I had a page for Formspring with about 300k with the vanity URL and one day Facebook decided we should no longer have the page. They deleted the page including all 300k fans and turned the vanity URL over to Formspring. They got to keep the name but they did not get to take the fan base with them.

If you can prove the name is yours and the person using the vanity URL does not own a company with the same name you may be able to take it over but if they are a legit business you will have to deal with a – or a 2 in your vanity name

  • I would try reporting it as intellectual property infringement:  http://www.facebook.com/report/   @lindsay-kustich  Hopefully that works and at least it’s not doing any harm since they aren’t using the Page.  That’s an interesting story,  @ken-mcclary!

  • @andrea-vahl  thank you..more where that come from

  • Thanks for the responses everyone! We are definitely going to do what we can to try to resolve this, and I’ll report back with any news! Thanks!
