Social Media at Work (versus at Home)! (16 posts)

  • Infographic looking at the use of Social Media at the workplace and in personal use.

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/markfidelman/2012/09/20/the-state-of-social-media-at-work-in-one-quick-infographic/

As would be expected, LinkedIn tops the list in “professional” use and Facebook in “personal” use.  Do you agree with these stats?

  • my present job does not require it so i ‘never’ use it. [ok, maybe not never]

  • @kimkline I agree that LinkedIn would be the top social media site used for business, as that’s what it’s made for.  That’s certainly the case for me.  I also use Facebook most for personal.  Interested to see others’ feedback.

  • facebook is  a big  part of my business   marketing…i dont use linked in…

..mainly  because .im  not hiring, not   doing  cyber  business…and not looking   for  far away  clients…..sometimes i get  curious  about it  but never  enough to  go into  it….i know its  great  for   job seekers .

  • @kimkline  @richardmclaughlin  @dianebianchi I use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest for work and personal. I do, however, keep my Facebook account private and I am conservative on my LinkedIn connections. Thanks for the Infographic share!

  • @annfurnivall  I know Facebook is huge for you Ann.  However, I would say that LinkedIn is not only for those seeking employment (I know I am not on it for that!).  I use it to make connections both business to business and with individuals of interest.  I join relevant groups, I keep up on industry news, and I provide information (basically set myself up as knowledgeable in my field).  I have also generated clients this way.
LinkedIn is a great way to bounce ideas and get knowledgeable feedback.  If you are ever more interested Ann, give it a try.  There may be some great groups out there you can join – even ones that are “local” to you!

  • @annfurnivall  @kimkline I agree with the stats in a general sense, but I also think that what works best for some doesn’t work best for others. A lot of what you “should” use depends on what you do and how you use the medium. LinkedIn is great for B2B, whereas Facebook, for me, is a better tool to build community. For my virtual marketing business, I have definitely generated more leads with LinkedIn, but when I had my restaurant, FB was better by leaps and bounds for reaching my clientele. I think the most important strategy for using either is to decide what suits your needs more, what your goal is for using that tool, and then use the tool and all of its features consistently and wholeheartedly to reach that goal.

  • @dawnchitwoodrivers  Great comments Dawn….and so well put!  And I agree with your B2B and LinkedIn angle.  It is crucial that you identify your Social Media goals and use whatever platform will help you accomplish them.  Thanks again Dawn!

  • @dawnchitwoodrivers @kimkline good points…..hopefully we are open to  lots of info  and   try  to  apply it   right   and  go where  our  customers  are….

i always  hope  im not locked into  any   theories  that  dont fit my  world!!!  if i  heard  my  wholesale[b2b] customers  talking about linked in i would   be more likely to go there…..   im so  curious  as a person i might   go there anyway,  just to see,   in my slower time…like  january…right now im  swamped  with     just  running the store…and  keeping   facebook interesting….3 times a day..

  • @annfurnivall  I understand how busy you are!  Let me know what you think of LinkedIn if you get a chance to look into it in your slower time.  Take care!

  • @annfurnivall Such a great attitude to have in any area of your life: not being locked into any theories and having an open mind. I love it!

  • @dawnchitwoodrivers, gee  thanks  …its  such an adventure  …

  • @annfurnivall I believe that LinkedIn is the single most important social media site for people who are self employed! I even do a free webinar: I’m Self-Employed. Why Do I Need LinkedIn?

You are really missing a lot.

  • @charlene-kingston reallly, like what? how has it  worked  for  your  business?

i  network in person all the time with customers and  other   owners..ive  been on  retail  forums  for  over  10  yrs………and  know   many many people in my   world…and i  go to their  cyber places…..and i  get tons of  general   background info from  places like here…..  and im  up to date on the trends i sell in….. so i  dont  see  what im  missing……   i already find  tons of general  chit chat….trust me on that…….also my  target b2b  buyers  have never even mentioned  linked in ….maybe i shold  ask  them  more…

i might t ry it in january….if  any  money  reasons pop up…so far,.all the  requests to   connect i have  gotten  were so  far  from  my  interests or  potential  customers that it  wasnt  even  tempting….i am  registered…

  • @annfurnivall It sounds like you are smart networker, Ann. LinkedIn lets you move that smarts online. These days, what’s online matters more than ever before. LinkedIn allows you to essentially recreate your in-person network and expand it. Plus, because it’s digital, its easy for your connections to share information about you (referrals).

I’ve got a list of 10 benefits from LinkedIn for self-employed people that I cover in my webinar. I don’t post my webinar notices here (for obvious reasons). If you are interested, email me or sign up for my newsletter. The webinars are listed in my newsletter and on my site.

  • @charlene-kingston thanks…. im not interested in webinars…. just wondered what your reasons  are. ….i cant  think of any for  my situation….

..i might try it in january….. i will definitely try it when i  get  some hints that  my  buyers  are on there….
