Should I deactivate my ’subscriptions’ on FB to force FB likes on my page? (8 posts)

  • Hi everyone,

Thank you for visiting this thread, ok so I have posted once before to a topic similar to this but am now wondering, as I just saw a friends page with 19,000 follwers and none on her personal page, if i should do the same and turn off the ‘subscribe’ option from my personal page which currently has over 850 people subscribed and growing daily.

This is VERY frustrating and possibly a costly error on my behalf as I allowed people to subscribe and now they only take this option and not the like option on my separate page for whatever reason.

I really need some advice here, i am at breaking point and considering cutting off over 850 followers and taking a major loss in order to force people towards my like page, and stop posting on my personal one.

This is hard for me to do, I have a very active personal page with up to 50 likes and comments on posts daily and a strong, loyal, following whom have been asked to come over to the page several times and decline.

I also use the personal page to support artists and many only have a personal page in which I have friends of and so can have access to their posts, photos, and artistic development which I wouldn’t have due to permissions from my like page… aARRRGHH.

Need help, need help, if i turn off the subscription now it might be disastrous for the meantime but ultimately I will have only one active page which is more professional and will remove the need to double up content.

    I am really stuck here.

    Thoughts?

    Thank you!

  • @arty if I were you, I will keep that “Subscriptions” on and will keep it Active, the audience on your FB profile & FB page are different crowd, they come to you with different intention … do what you have to do, engage yourself with your audiences on both of your FB profile & FB page, be yourself and don’t compare yourself with others, focus on the quality of the content instead of numbers.

  • Hi Ann!

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes I understand what you are saying here, it is true, I guess there are different reasons for keeping subscriptions and pages however, I do fear that perhaps I have shot myself in the foot by allowing open subscriptions as this seems to be the preference for people these days, and personal pages are not supposed to be for business or branding (as a percentage) and so these are some of my concerns.

Also the doubling up of content, advertising opportunities, linking from my personal websites and the idea of maintaining a ‘professional’ front are among others…I am still unsure but this helps.

  • i believe @annliu is absolutely correct. Don’t get disgruntled because of a number on your fan page site. Look at the bigger picture. You have genuine fans that are interested in you/your business. Regardless where they are following you from, your page or your profile the point is they ARE followers. Don’t be put off by a misleading number of “LIkes” because from the numbers you have described it sounds like you are doing fantastic!

  • @arty – nah, don’t fear, think about long term benefits you will gain, both of your FB profile & fan page is represent ‘YOU,” your product also come from ‘YOU”, not anyone else.

For some people, no matter what you do, they will never come or show up on your fan page, they just want to be on your Profile page & ‘Be with YOU’ (they might feel closer to you on this way) .. for some others, they don’t like to be toooo businessss, so that’s why they don’t join you, for some, they might thought they already on your friend list, they don’t need to go your fan page, for whatever the reason they might have, you can’t control anyway, so leave it, let them be, you just do your part .. but do check your profile ‘Privacy Setting’ from time to time ..

Since we are in the digital society, as there over 800 million users on FB, it is hard to say which way is better for build up one ‘brand’, sometime FB profile work much better than FB page, the different is FB profile has limitation on Friends (5000, but open up subscribe help you enroll more people), the FB page no limit, but it takes time to build the fan base (again, all the data are belong to FB, not belong you)

    @sgsrecording – thank YOU.

  • @Ann Liu and sgsrecording – Thank YOU!

Ahh feeling a bit better now, yes I just re-visited my email history after having a mini-freak out over the likes thing and see that I – Art Bitch – have only been running since July 2011, and the like page even less, so not that long in the bigger picture I guess.

People definitely love to subscribe that’s for sure. 5000 friends in that time and now an average of a hundred every few days…and counting.

  • @arty I feel your pain. Virtually speaking. I teach Facebook workshops quite often, and yours is a common dilemma.

I would keep the “Subscribe” option on your personal profile — it sounds as if you are doing different things with your personal profile and fan page. As long as you aren’t selling or marketing anything via your personal profile, I’m guessing you’re not violating Facebook’s Terms of Service.

Based on conversations I’ve had with many people who have tried to convert all their friends into fans, my unscientific evidence says that about 25% of your friends will convert — and that’s if you completely shut down all activity on your personal profile. That’s a depressing thought, but I believe it’s a fairly accurate percentage.

On the brighter side, a lot of people who friend others aren’t truly friends. Those friends who actually take the step to convert into fans tend to be very loyal fans. So, in a sense, converting to just using your FB page may result in an even stronger, more loyal fan base.

Just some stuff to think about. I’m rambling… was working super late last night and my brain’s not functioning properly!

  • Hi Laura!

Thank you for your reply, appreciate it, and no not rambling. *)

I agree with the 25% figure roughly, seems about right for me also.

Will leave subscriptions open for now, but yes, looking back, I might have not allowed the subscription option and forced them over to the page. Anyways is all working so no problems for now.
