Shorten or not URLs links on Facebook posts? (4 posts)

  • Should we shorten links on Facebook posts?

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

  • I shorten them using a service that allows me to monitor the metrics of how many page views we get. But if you (unlike me) can obtain the analytics for your site, then you probably can just run the longer URLs. Just keep in mind, if you want your entire post to appear without the dreaded [More] notation, then a shorter URL may be beneficial.

  • It really depends on what you’re posting about.

People like reading quick, enticing blurbs.  They don’t have time to read a paragraph. But every once in a while it’s fine to writing something longer.

A good rule of thumb is “the shorter the better.”

Some people don’t like click on shortened URLs but it’s not a huge amount.  Usually when you post a URL it will automatically update at the bottom of the post with the page info.  Personally, after it auto-populates that info I delete the link from the post itself.
