QR Codes & Facebook Pages (20 posts)

  • Hello Everyone,

We’re trying to set up a QR campaign for liking our FB page (linky). However, when we load the QR code and use our QR code readers (my boss is running Android 2.3.4 on a Droid, I’m running Blackberry 6 on a 9330) our mobile browsers load the Facebook mobile site and it defaults to our personal pages, not the business page!

Does anyone know a way around this? Or why this happens?

  • Hi Jason,
What url link did you input for the QR code to go to?  Did your put your company Facebook page or your personal page url?  When you scan the QR code, it should go directly to the page, video, etc. that you specify.

  • @jasonreilly I agree with  @seleanaw, definitely check the URL the QR code goes to. Your business page will have a special URL that can be found in your settings on the page or when you go directly to the business page. You want the QR code to go there. You also will want to make sure your Business Page is not “protected” or locked for viewing. Once you verify all of that the QR code should work.

We had issues on a website one of our codes went to because there was a “redirect” on the page. We resolved that and were able to get the QR Code to stay at the right page. Good luck!

  • Yeah, it worked fine for me (my QRCode to my business page, that is).

  • Great idea  @jasonreilly , by the way!

  • Is your QR code simply having your smart phone visit your FB Page where you hope that they click Like?

Or are you using the QR code to send an SMS to 32665 yourpagenamehere? I’m using the later and it works great!

  • Hi Jason,

This may sound like a long way around a problem but here’s what happened to me. When I first added our a client’s FB Fan Page as a tab on their mobile web site it was behaving funny. One time it would go to a non-mobile optimized page, then the next time maybe to the mobile page. It was all over the place….So what I did and it has worked ever since, is go to the FB Fan Page on your mobile phone from your browser, not fm the FB app and copy the mobile URL. I then sent it to myself in an email and added it as the link for that tab on the mobile web site. Since then it has rendered just fine. In your case use that mobile URL as the URL to create your QR code. Should work, but as you found out it seems like you can never test enough.Good Luck, Mark

  • Hello Everyone! You guys are fast! :)

Okay, I’m going to double check the QR code to make sure it is working, and then I’ll report back. We just want it to go to:

    http://www.facebook.com/BellwetherCU

So nothing special. I’ll double check to make sure our page isn’t protected, but I don’t think it should be!

  • Okay quick update: I switched the URL to the wall feed 0 mobile URL (so it defaults to the top of the wall feed on the mobile device). My phone battery is toast, and I’m not allowed to charge it at work, so I just ran out to my car to charge it. I’ll have more news soon!

  • Final Update! I put in our mobile URL linking directly to our wall and it worked PERFECTLY! Thank you everyone for your help, you pointed me in the right direction and helped me out greatly! :)

As to how we are going to use it, we’re looking to generate Facebook likes and engagement by bringing the QR code on pamphlets, handouts, and business cards at local events. Further, QR codes are going to become a component of our mobile strategy, and will let us really harness our mobile site as a tool for our frontline staff (rates, special offers, etc).

  • Yes I too use the QR for Facebook and Twitter likes.  Currently I have it printed on the bottom of my invoices, though I’m intrigued as to what Heather  @clusterwebdesign said about  ’32665 yourpagenamehere’.  I’ve not come across that.

  • @jasonreilly Not “allowed” to charge your phone at work? Huh? I guess I’m so out of corporate culture being a solo entrepreneur but, out of curiosity, why a rule like that?

  • @casmccullough not allowed, but not the fault of our management. We are leasing a building space. The building owners dropped all of these rules on us right before we moved in, claiming that it was required by insurance: nothing that plugs in (seriously: I can’t have a desk lamp, and our graphic designer is not allowed to have the magnifying glass + lamp she wants either), no potted plants with a pot greater then six inches, no fans, no heaters, no food at our desks, its crazy. EVERYTHING we could have at our old (but tiny tiny tiny) location is gone. Which sucks. We’re working on changing it.

  • P.S. Note that I’m jealous too :) I’d love to work from home. PJs would be mandatory business formal. :D
    @casmccullough

  • @jasonreilly

That’s crazy about not being able to charge your phone at work.

I have never heard of an insurance company that puts those type restrictions on a tenant.

Could it be that the property manager is just trying to keep the utility bills down?

I’d seriously be asking to see that clause in writing for myself.

Are you allowed to plug in your laptops? Your computers?

If so, can you use the USB to charge your phone?

  • @warrenveach no clue as to the reasoning for this insanity, but management was NOT happy with it. A lot of muttering going on. As for the USB, I work for a Credit Union and although my computer isn’t hooked up to anything protected, it could be. As a result, foreign devices are strictly regulated by IS.

My big worry right now is trying to develop homegrown apps – so that we can control our tabs instead of Shortstack! :) Facebook seems to have disabled doing that unless you pay someone else, which I think is a bit heavy handed. I’m going to keep working on it!

  • @emillewolstenholme Emille – I learned this trick in the recent Mari Smith Facebook course. I use QR-Code Generator found here -  http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ - choose SMS, and then enter 32665 in the NR field, and your FB page name in the Message field. For me, my FP page is ClusterWebDesign. Generate, and viola!

I think in the right circumstances, this QR code could be really powerful. For example, when you’re waiting in line (but not for too long :) ) and you see this code, how many wouldn’t pull out their smart phone and scan it? If you’re at a tradeshow?

    Heather

  • @clusterwebdesign Yes, people would scan it if you had words under it that says “LIKE US on facebook” and they knew who / what the QR code was about.

  • Yes, assumed.

  • We’re working on some presentation issues right now. We have a lot of ideas we’re playing with, but we’re thinking of including QR codes on business cards and also on some packages that we send out to indirect lenders and such. If I get permission too, I’ll post some images of the final products so you guys can see them!
