Promoting a Facebook contest/sweepstakes (7 posts)

  • I’m running a campaign on my client’s Facebook page but it’s not getting as much participation as I expected. I welcome any critique or advice you can offer.

In response to Hurricane Sandy my client is donating up to $5,000 to three charities. We are asking for people to register (using shortstack) and choose 1 of 3 charities listed and my client will donate $10 per participant. We are not asking anyone to make a donation. My client is making the donation.

It’s been running 3 weeks and we only got 75 participants. We are not requiring people to Like the page. My client wants it to be a philanthropic campaign, not pure marketing. We ran almost a dozen print ads, digital ads & Facebook promoted posts. We emailed our email list of 5000 twice and even reached out to the three organizations. They posted it at least once on their page but it got lost in the mix of other organizations’ disaster relief campaigns.

I’m concerned that we are not reaching enough people. I don’t know what else to do. The FB promoted posts were/are the most effective. Any other suggestions / recommendations anyone can make is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for all your input!!

  • The message isn’t all that clear I think you need to dumb it down – fewer words ”You Click We Donate”
We’ve always had trouble getting “tab” clicks. That said, your client is well healed enough to do this promotion.
We’re using http://www.fannewscast.com/ (we have no relationship with them) They created a news feed page http://goo.gl/NnbSL - installed it for us and then during a 30 minute call they helped me write ads (and I learned a LOT on that call)  that resolve to this page which is like gated. It’s very effective and we’re picking up about 1200 fans a month. There‘s a tab for the page but most of the traffic comes from the feed page driven by ads
Your ads could be zip code based and with a “senior living” feed you may see some more engagement. The feed cost $50/mo set up was free and we’re spending $10/day now on 2 ads

Thanks for your input Mitch. I see what you mean about the messaging not being clear once you’re on the tab. I was thinking people would see the timeline cover image first (which is more descriptive). But now that I think about it, that’s not the case with the people that the FB ads target.

FanNewscast looks very interesting. That’s amazing that you get 1200 new fans per month! I’ll definitely look into that.

    Thanks again Mitch!

  • Great suggestion @mitch-rezman and I see that you already changed it
    @lydiamediavilla
I’m not sure why you aren’t getting that many participants, it seems like a great cause and you even say that your e-mail will only be used to thank you and you can uncheck that you get an e-mail address.  Plus it’s easy to share afterwards.

I did it and it all seemed great.  I’m really surprised you haven’t had more participation from your own list.  Maybe more of a focus of “Help us give away our money” messaging on all your social sites.  I think the barrier to help is very low here.

  • Hi Andrea, It was hard getting the point across that my client was the one making the donation not the participants. I like your suggestion “help us give away our money”. It’s simple and to the point.I was thinking of adding that to the thank you email & asking the participants to forward the email to their friends and family extending our reach. Thanks for your input! @andrea-vahl

  • @lydiamediavilla Great suggestions by folks. I hope you are (or were?) finding greater success with your donation tab. I couldn’t see anything for Pay it Forward on Safari, but perhaps the drive is over. (Oops, read more carefully. It’s def done.) The Page is great, by the way, great variety of posts with interactivity/engagement.

@mitch-rezman FanNewCast looks awesome. Difficult to fathom 1.2K new Fans in a month. I imagine this service is for firms with deep marketing pockets. I’m just a solo web developer. My Fb Page is a bit of a joke, since I’ve never really prioritized it, but one of my resolutions in the new year will be to significantly improve it.

  • @jon-whitbeck – If Facebook wasn’t producing tangible sales we wouldn’t be spending the money From a marketing point of view – AdWords is getting very expensive while Bing is serving up Facebook profiles to dovetail with searches on the right similar to the FB time line – just doing the math.
