Problems with Tabs…Please help (10 posts)

Topic tags: tabs, thumbnail, Timeline
  • Hi all.

I just created a business page. Everything seemed to gone well except that Im having trouble with the tabs. I first want to link it from the page itself. But when I click on the pencil icon and I scroll down, it doesn’t give me a way to put in a URL or a web link.

Secondly, when I click on the pencil icon I select edit settings. There are no features to change the thumbnail or add a topic under it.

I’m probably skipping a step here or missing something. Please help.

  • I’m not sure exactly what you are trying to do @virgilvergara  Do you have a custom tab that you have set up and are just trying to set up the title of that tab?  It sounds like you are talking about a URL redirect which you can’t do.  Take a look at the way our tabs work at Social Media Examiner:  www.facebook.com/smexaminer – each one of those tabs is a custom application that we installed and then re-named and added a custom cover photo.  The apps live on Facebook.  Let me know if you are trying to do something different. Thanks!

  • Thanks for replying AndreaVahl.

I went to the Social Media site and thats exactly how I want to set up my tabs. However, I’m a bit stuck on how to create that same function. I know it has something to do with creating an app and then connecting them all together. I tried that and I ended up create a Heroku account for a cloud computing development which I don’t need.

Is there any tutorials out there that will walk me through the process? Or would you just suggesting going through a 3rd party Tab creator like Lajure?

It just doesn’t seem that easy I think.

  • @virgilvergara I used WooBox to set up tabs on one of the pages I manage, http://www.facebook.com/wellpetseconomyclinics. I had these tabs redirect to an iFrame for some of them. WooBox has the URL redirect but I preferred iFrame and the Calendar integration for this page.
    Hope this helps

  • @virgilvergana  I used ShortStack and Lajure.  They both have a free plan and are both very easy to use.  ShortStack has lots of tutorials on YouTube at ShortStackLab.

  • Thank you AlexandraBriggs and MichaelGoes for your replies.

I’ve realized now how really tedious and time consuming it is putting up a tab page without the use of third party app developers.

I’ve looked in to using Lajure and Shortstack. In fact, I like both of them. If I were to choose one, which one would it be?

I notice that Lajure doesn’t have a promotions widget and that Shortstack does. Michael can you tell me that advantages and disadvantages of both these services? Which do you prefer the most?

  • @virgilvergara At the time I built the Apps, Lajure only offered one free App, whereas, with Shortstack, I built eleven for free.  That is the reason, I’ve used ShortStack more, however, I do like the one App that I built with Lajure better.  It just appeared better – my website fit nicely into Lajure’s widget.

When I built the same App in ShortStack, my website did not fit as well.  Even though I built it to the same dimensions, the site overlapped the right-side margin and it just didn’t look as nice.  So… I display my website’s inventory page using Lajure and all the other Apps are built with ShortStack.

The one thing I found very useful in ShortStack was the ability to store media on their servers.  I don’t know if Lajure offers this service; I didn’t spend much time on Lajure checking out all the features there.

You can always easily change providers and build new apps or use multiple providers as I have.  I had never built Apps before and the process with both providers I used, was really straight forward and no coding knowledge was required.

I hope this was helpful to you.  Let me know if there is anything further I can do for you.  Take care.

  • I wrote a post on finding apps and adding them to your page, @virgilvergara here:  http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/how-to-find-and-add-facebook-apps-to-your-facebook-page/  It’s written before Timeline came along but it still applies.

There is also a link in there about the top 10 custom apps.  I didn’t have Shortstack in there but I do really like it.  I do think that Lujure is a little more customizable and easier to drag and drop things.  Hope that helps!

  • I put up a blog post on handling the app-strip on Facebook.  Lujure makes it very easy to do.  However, I have one website that needs to be seen entirely.  I used https://www.facebook.com/vindiapps, its ZoomFrame app so the entire site can be seen.  You can read my post on http://www.assistingauthors.com.

Thanks @andrea-vahl for the posts.  The resources are invaluable.

  • @virgilvergara I really like short stack and the promotions functions work fairly well.
