Postings Related to Holidays/Special Dates (7 posts)

  • With St. Patrick’s Day approaching I have been trying to think of different “catchy” status updates to do for each of the business pages to generate responses from our followers. We are in education so all of my posts reference prerequisites or applying or even studying. As I was brainstorming I began to wonder if anyone else takes advantage of holidays and/or special dates for postings? We don’t have sales to promote or anything of that nature but post to keep others engaged and enjoying following us.
Does anyone have methods they use that they find beneficial? Typically I try to find articles to share but holidays are a time when I try to add a layer of “fun” to the posts. I know many blogs will do “contests” for holidays and have everyone post but what about my fellow Facebook Fanpage admins? Any input? Is this something that gets too overdone?

  • @alexandrabriggs, as long as your post adds value, it cannot be overdone. I manage a FB page for a winery and we also do not promote sales or run a competition. But since holidays are mostly linked to eating in one way or the other, we try to get the matching wine in there ;-) The post could for example suggest a specific dish for a romantic Valentine’s dinner that goes well with wine ABC. Or if there is a traditional dish served during Easter holidays, here’s the wine that goes well with it… Another example: In Austria, we have a tradition around Nikolaus and Krampus (the good guy and the bad guy, in simple terms) early December and since the bad guy looks like the devil and is dressed in red and black and because the wine’s label is red and black, we simply suggest that wine for gifts or dinners around that time. The perfect colour match conveys the message… So yes, holidays are a perfect opportunity to engage with your fans!

  • @alexandrabriggsI know that PR people really work the holiday angles but I don’t have any pages that I do that for.  I think sometimes something on the general day but I think it’s fun when people have more theme-based promotions/updates.  Food pages always seem to do this really well too.

  • @claudiapoeckl @andrea-vahl Thank you both for your insight! I agree that food industry pages tend to do very well with these types of messaging. I think I have come up with a good post to use if I can figure out the best way to incorporate it! I will let you know how it pans out!

  • I think the thing to remember with facebook pages is not everything has to be 100% related to what the page is about. If you want to wish a happy StPaddy’s day, Christmas, Easter, Halloween simply do it. In my experience you will not loose any fans doing this and a lot of them appreciate it and interact. I take it one step further and even dress my profile picture up for it lol. Will start with the large banner now we have them :)

  • @alexandrabriggs I regularly seek out holidays to celebrate on my Facebook business pages. Fans like brands for product information, but also because they feel some sort of draw to that brand. Transparency is becoming a part of social media strategies and what’s more transparent than showing that your company is made up of real people celebrating real holidays?

I look for holidays that relate to my business such as National Readers Day for a college or National Margarita Day for a travel agency. I also play up real holidays for no reason other than engaging fans in increasing their chance of seeing future posts through EdgeRank. For example, on Halloween I asked fans to come trick-or-treating on the Facebook page. There was absolutely no connection to the brand other than interaction and fun with fans.

Social media is about having fun so go ahead, celebrate St. Patty’s Day! Talk about the history of the holiday, Irish culture, Irish in America, etc.

  • I am kinda off the cuff, I do some “did you know” segments about non traditional holidays (National Popcorn Day, National Rubber Band Day) just to get a chuckle from those that follow me…I try to keep it informative yet put a funny pic up.
