Please weigh in – Too Early to Attend Social Media Marketing World Event? (8 posts)

  • Hi all, I am a full time mom and recently started a part time social media company. I have a couple small clients that I am working with and my goal is to build something slowly over a couple of years while my kids are young (and my time is limited) that I can ramp up when they are both in school full time.  I saw the info for the Social Media Marketing conference in San Diego in April and was excited about coming to it to learn from the best.

I’d love to get some feedback, however, about if this is perhaps too early for me?  Are the topics all at an advanced level, and am I better off doing a one day event somewhere first?  Any input or thoughts are appreciated!  Please help direct this newbie!  :)
    All the best,
    Leila

  • Hey @leila

If you already have started your own business doing social media for other people, I think you are ready to attend this event.  I follow a lot of the people who will be speaking and the principles information they teach will help you whether you are brand new to the game or a seasoned veteran.  The truth is, social media platforms are still so new they are always changing and evolving, so you really have to keep up with what is going on, and this is a great opportunity to get a lot of information from and network with the best in the business.

In short, no it is not too early for you, and I think everyone on here will recommend you go.

  • @dain-hanson, Thank you for your feedback!  That’s what I was hoping to hear! :)

  • Great thoughts @dain-hanson
And @leila – I know I have this in the other thread but I’m going to put it here too for the benefit of anyone who is also struggling with this question:

I definitely know that there will be a wide range of material.  If you know the very basics (which you should since you are working as a social media consultant) then I think you will get some valuable information from this.  I don’t think this conference is good for people who don’t understand how Facebook works at all, or haven’t signed up for Twitter yet.  It’s not at that early early stage.  But if you are using Facebook and Twitter regularly, even if you just have 100 followers or fans, you will get something out of this.

Where I think the REAL value comes in for these types of conferences is in the networking.  Since you are on a budget (I’m guessing since you are early in your business) you may wonder if you should spend your money here or something online.  Online learning is great but it can’t replace making actual connections.  I know my own business would not be where it was today if I didn’t make some sacrifices and go to live events.

All that being said, there are a LOT of places to spend money – I know how that can be.  So if you decide it’s not the right time, then that’s ok too.  You know your business and what you need better than I do.  So make sure you are doing the right thing for you and your business.  Hope that all helps!!

  • Thanks  @andrea-vahl that was pretty much exactly what I was trying to say, you just said it better then me. LOL.

But it reinforces the importance for networking and making the connections with people who are in the exact situation you are in.  Those connections can be priceless in the future.

I personally only found this site recently through a connection and I think joining in on these conversations and learning from the people here will be greatly beneficial in the future for me.

  • @leila I think you would really benefit from the conference and any of the web conferences that SME puts on. I have attended multiple online conferences and registered for Social Media Marketing World as soon as I was sent the information! So much of my knowledge in the Social Media world has come from SME and these Networking Clubs!

Hope to see you at the conference in April!

  • @alexandrabriggs, thanks for your feedback. :)  I have decided to go. I’m all registered and booked my flight last night!!  Are there any groups on here where we can meet others attending in advance do you know?

Look forward to meeting you in person! Leila

  • @leila My pleasure! Looking forward to meeting you as well!
