How does Facebook determine whether you are a Place or a Page? How can I switch a from a place designation to a page designation?

Your the one that determines it. To edit your settings follow this Admin Panel > Manage > Edit page> Basic Information. From there you will be able to switch things around.

@deereinhardt I believe if you are wanting individuals to “check-in” at your business you want to make sure address information is included and then it should work as a “Place.” If you don’t want to associate a physical address you want it to be a page

So if I understand this, by entering an address of any kind, you automatically become a place?
I followed the directions that @scottmadden offered and made a change from Local Business to Corporation and it still shows up in searches under places instead of pages.

I just tried switching a page I had to a Company Page (rather than Local Business) and it looked like it took the Place checkin capability out, @deereinhardt even though I had an address. But I’m not totally sure on this. The language in Facebook Basic Info tab looks like if you have a valid address they will allow checkins.
