Pinterest drops the invites (9 posts)

  • I never understood why they took the invite route in the first place, but they are dropping it. They’ve also added new categories – Tattoo’s (I’ll use that one for sure (rolling eyeballs)), Quotes and Weddings (Wasn’t that there already?)

    Anyhooo   here’s the article http://mashable.com/2012/08/08/pinterest-open-invites/

  • @amyhallbiz  I agree Amy…never understood the need for “invites” anyway!

  • thanks for the info…. hope  they are  responding as  fast as the invites  worked….  they had  such a long wait at first….

  • I guess this signals the beginning of a new era – or the end of one, depending on your perspective :-)
My take is: they are probably setting themselves up for either an IPO or, more likely, an enticing offer from a big competitor (Twitter? Facebook? Apple?). Either way, dropping the invite means a surge in subscribers, which will in turn make it more appealing for takeover. Time will tell…

  • ummmmm… all of Image Content (Pin) on this site is based on copyright infringement.

  • @kimkline @amyhallbiz Probably because, at first, they needed to have responsible users that would only post high quality pictures that would attract more people on pinterest later on.

  • @kimkline i think it  was to get  us early  users    to invite our whole  friend list…  i invited  tons of people… kind of like i was their salesperson…..kind of  wierd  tho….. and the invites worked so much  better than  trying to get on  thru the site ..

.. @daydev if true  , millions  are   ignoring  it for now….any new info on this?

  • @annfurnivall I’m not sure of any new info, but it does seem like a number of analytics and dashboard-related sites are popping up.  Pinerly seems to be using a growth plan exactly like Pinterest (i.e. invite only for now), but it has some pretty interesting features for campaign creation and such.

We’ll see what happens now that Pinterest has finally opened Pandora’s Box.

  • I just went in with FB as my invite. didn’t know one was required. Remember back when Google needed an invite? now we are legend.
