New Facebook ad format (7 posts)

  • Hello! So I haven’t been on here in some time because I’ve been very busy, but I need help with this and I figure this is the best place to go.

Recently, the format of my Facebook ads have changed. I used to see:

Clicks – people who clicked on the ad, but didn’t “like” the page

Connections – people who clicked on the ad and “liked” the page

    But now I’m seeing:

Clicks – (defined as Facebook as) “the number of clicks this campaign’s ad has received. If you’re promoting a page, event, or app clicks also include page likes, event RSVP’s, or app installs directly from the ad.”

Actions - (defined as Facebook as)”this data includes all the people who take an action within 24 hours of viewing an ad in this campaign, or within 28 days after clicking on it.”

Is anyone else seeing this change?

I’m usually pretty good at figuring things like this out, but for some reason this is really confusing me. I’m GUESSING I’m still only getting charged just for clicks, and not actions? And my main concern is, the clicks section. Clicks used to mean people who clicked on your ad but didn’t turn into a fan. Now clicks mean only people who liked the page? How will I know how many people clicked on my page but DIDN’T like it? Is that what “actions” are supposed to be now?

If someone could please clear this up for me, I will be forever grateful. Since I don’t spend $1500 or more on Facebook ads in a month, Facebook of course won’t provide me with any kind of customer service. Guess they don’t have love for us smaller businesses…

  • Sometimes I think it is all a guessing game.  My understanding is we only get charged for the clicks.  The actions are like the connections, but a little looser now.  (The action total on my current add is twice the number of the clicks, so that’s odd.)

I’ll be interested in what others say about this as well.

  • Hi Samantha (@amoresocial)

If you look further down in the ad results, you can see the performance for actions like page likes, page tab views, page photo views, etc.  I had 321 actions, but of those, only 115 likes (out of 151 clicks.)

  • @asearfoss Ahhh – I saw the pie chart before but didn’t make the connection between that slice that says page likes and the clicks. So if I want to know how many people actually liked the page, I have to look at the pie graph to see that. If I want to know how many people clicked on the ad in total, I look at clicks.

Right? Thank you so much for your help!

  • Interesting new change to the reporting!  I ran an ad just a couple weeks ago and it wasn’t like that then!  Ahh Facebook :)

  • @andrea-vahl I believe they did it to make the ad reports more insightful, which they are. But they are also much more confusing. I just clicked on “see full actions report” and there are other pages listed under objects.

You think Facebook would have put together a helpful guide for all the changes, but no, they just change it and don’t say a word about it! I’m hoping more marketers will catch on and someone will write a helpful blog post about it or something…

  • Hmmm better get blogging :)
