Merge Page Odd Issue (17 posts)

Topic tags: merge page, Merge Place
  • I am working with a client who has two place pages. I’m now an admin to be able to examine them. They are both named Thrifty Witch Consignment and they both have the identical address in them. They both are categorized the same.

Looking at both pages through the ‘edit page’ link, there are bing maps on both. On one map, however, the map indicates her shop is somewhere across the ocean. She tried to move the icon to the right place and it was not allowed as it was too far a move.

Looking at that page from the info tab, no map shows at all.

She has reentered the correct address to see if that would reset the page. It did not.

    Any insights into this situation?

I’ve advised her she needs to move forward on one page and keep notifying the other fans to move over to the active page.

Anyone else having an issue similar to this?

Acting as an admin, and not the page, we navigate to the Resource area, the ‘merge duplicate page’ link leads to the dialog screen that has the merge button.

Here is where it gets wierd

  • @michellefontaine hi, i searched for the page, first of all tell me which one page do you or your client want to be there i mean which one is right one http://www.facebook.com/thriftywitchconsignment or http://www.facebook.com/witch6 ?once we get clear on this, we can make some research ahead,

  • Hi Moin @moinshaikh

It is the one with username of thriftywitchconsignment which has 47 fans. Thanks for trying to solve this mystery.

    Michelle

  • @michellefontaine ok, i would rather request you to keep your thank with you to be used at later part when this problem is solved! :) (just kidding, i really love to help mates, so don’t need thanks!) just stay connected and be social that’s my thank :) see ya.

  • @michellefontaine one solution can be :

install static iframe tab on the wrong page, then enter the url of correct fb page into redirect box that static ifram shows you. Thus you can redirect all those fans who come to wrong page automatically to the correct page. Let me know if you need further assistance on how to do this.

I hope this works well, this way your client won’t need to keep notifying people to come to right place!

  • Hi @michellefontaine – is there another place that you are talking about other than the two that  @moinshaikh found?  Because the one with 47 Likes is a true Place Page with a Fan Page since it has the checkins.  The other one with 33 Likes is just a Fan Page.  If you are an admin to both, you should be able to Merge them if you navigate to your Edit Page area as your personal profile and not your Page.  Then under Resources there should be a Merge.

If you are talking about a different Place Page that isn’t showing up in the searches, what you need to do is navigate to the Place Page and claim it, then merge it with your other one.  Hope that helps and let me know how it goes!

  • @andrea-vahl I know the second one appears to be a fan page and not a place page but as an admin I know they are both set up as local places, both have bing maps. But on the one with 33 the map does not show except to an admin. also the two addresses in both pages are identical. The map on this page however shows a point somewhere across the Bering sea…!I believe the way to change a fan page to a place page is by adding an address and having a bing map show..is that correct? The other thing is we do see the merge link under page and are using it as our personal page.

  • @moinshaikh Wow..I did not know there was a redirect box on the static HTML Bo’s. I did start encouraging her to move over to the good page and start pushing that one.I know there aren’t a lot of ans on these two pages but this is a case we can learn from. thank you for your responses!

  • @michellefontaine, thanks! to make sure it works well, i did a test this morning with one of my client, and m happy to say it worked well.

So, is the issue is solved or you need any further help, i mean in terms of redirection etc.? If yes, let me know and i’ll be glad to help!

    1. @moinshaikh – with the static iframe, do you just enter the URL – what should you do with the other settings:  - Non fanpage Source, friendgate and formgate?  And the FB fangate Bug – disable?
This could be very useful.  I have a FB page where the default landing page would not show up (any ideas on that?) but I couldn’t merge it to the new page cuz there were different names.

  • @ndonelly see if you you just need to enter url in URL, non fan page source is used to take non-fans, to the page where they should hit the like button. friendgate and formagate are not needed to touch. FB fangate needed to be enabled.

So total scenario would be:Enter actual fb page url in the URL box of non-fan page source, enable the fb fangate, do not do anything with formgate and friendgate, and yes, click on checkbox default tab. This will made your tab default landing page.

  • Does anyone know a workaround for a fanpage where there is no default landing tab option?  This has also happened to someone else I know, so I know it’s some weird FB thing.  Is there some other page type setting that causes this _ I have played around with categories to see if something would change this and I can’t seem to do anything that makes the default landing page tab appear. (I use it on other pages so I know where it should appear…)

The problem with the redirect that @moinshaikh  mentioned (which I had hopes for solving my dilemma) is that you apparently have to make it the default landing tab to work so that didn’t solve my particular problem.

And oh yeah, I tried FB support and got nothing – not even a nasty response….LOL….

  • @ndonelly, We have 3 Golf Courses all with their own FB Pages.  When I created the pages, two of them merged with their place pages immediately upon updating the place page info.  However, the 3rd course”s place page was not created correctly when it was created.  I’m pretty sure I know who did it, but he 1)  created the name in all lowercase, and 2) did not add any location info (no address, website, phone, etc).  Facebook WOULD NOT UPDATE THAT PAGE, even though I tried many times.  I contacted FB about the issue in July 2010.  They did nothing until about 2 weeks ago when I sent them a message stating that the courses would no longer be advertising with FB as long as the company couldn’t do a simple merge on the Place Page and the Fan Page.  Of course, in this info, I had web domain info and other things that showed that 1) I had authority to request the change and 2) we were the owners of the place listed on the place page.

What I’m saying is:  Yes, do whatever workarounds you can in order to push customers to the correct page ~ but also work with FB on correcting the issue.  It takes them a LONG time to get it done, so workarounds are important in the meantime.

  • @dedimason – thank you – it’s nice to know that FB will eventually answer you.  I think the key there is you had advertising dollars on the account.  Advertising is the money-maker for FB so  that’s an effective way to get their attention.  Since I’ve sorta orphaned that account because it was “structurally damaged”, I haven’t advertised it – I could show them the dollars I’ve spent on other sites and maybe they’ll react, so good idea……doesn’t have to be money spent on the “bad” site to get them to pay attention……just wish it were a little easier……LOL  Thanks for your input – I appreciate it..

  • @ndonelly ~ Definitely show them the other pages.  All of the pages I run are directly connected to my personal page, so I just told them to look up my account.  Also ~ we had only spent $300 in advertising in 2010, so it’s not like you have to have spent tons to get their attention.

If those pages are NOT yours but you’re listed as an ADMIN on them, I would tell them that you have a direct say in spending for the accounts that you ADMIN and to simply look at those accounts, rather than giving them a list of pages.

Facebook’s policy is that you CANNOT open more than one account, so if they misread your message and think that you have several accounts, you risk the accounts being shut down.  JUST DISCUSS THOSE THAT YOU ADMIN.

  • @dedimason  - thanks Dedi – good point because I am an administrator on the clients’ accounts, not the owner and I need to be clear that it’s multiple fanpages, not multiple profiles – so they don’t shut me down…LOL  Good to know you don’t have to be a big spender to get their attention.  I was afraid I’d be small potatoes to them.  Thanks again.:)

  • No problem!  Good luck!
