Marketing strategies in light of Timeline for Social Media Professionals (6 posts)

  • While there are so many people angry about the latest Facebook changes (when aren’t they right??) I believe those of us who are in the social media b2b market see these changes a lot differently. Well, we have to actually, otherwise we’ll go out of business.

I thought I would spark a discussion regarding marketing strategies in light of the new Timeline changes. Are you going to be doing anything different? Do you see this as an opportunity or a set back?

For me, coming from web/graphic design, my plan will be to contact as many local businesses and offer to create a branded cover image for free. I don’t normally give my services away like that, but the way I look at it … it’s a great way to build trust with local businesses and let them know I’m not trying to capitalize on their misfortune. They will have no choice in making the change, and the new timeline format could be confusing enough for them. I see this as a foot in the door type of move too. I have other services they may be interested in and hopefully this will be a step towards building great relationships with local businesses.

Anyone else have any marketing strategies they want to share?

  • @scottprock

Just out of curiosity, how much do you charge?

  • I think it is wonderful . The new timeline format allows you to convey your company’s message clearly and the new page width gives you a lot more real estate for your message. Which means no more trying to squeeze a fully functioning eCommerce store into a tiny canvas. With the power of WordPress combined with the tens of thousands of plugins available the opportunity’s are limitless.

Rather than giving a one time discount or freebee I am offering free SSL hosting for all of my customers fan pages.

  • I personally like the new format, although I will miss the landing page functionality, but will compensate for that by putting a large “start here” home page button, which will link to my iwipa created page.

It forces me to create apps for facebook that will be more viral in nature, so thats my plan moving forward.  The idea will be to put the “LIKE” button on as many objects as possible.  Thats what I will be doing.  I believe that is what facebook is encouraging developers to do with the open graph.

If done correctly, page owners should still be able to “leverage” the virality of facebook without having to fork out hard cash for advertising…. :)

  • Social media is a PART of your overall marketing plan.  I like your idea @scottprock, but you might want to pitch it as, Let me help you enhance your company page for the new timeline for $xx and I will give you a cover photo for no charge.  That way the branding is all similar.

  • @bertievg I like  @deereinhardt ‘s approach as I haven’t had a client where all I did was a cover photo, and I don’t charge anything less than $250 to start for a basic branding package that ties in their brand (profile image, colors, etc) and works up from there depending on what their goals are and if I am to do ongoing marketing/management.

Each client is different and receives a plan that is specific to their goals, so I don’t really have a set price but my goal is to shoot for $1500 – $2500 per client

    … Scott
