Landing Pages on New Facebook Page (30 posts)

Topic tags: Facebook, Timeline
  • It seems Facebook has taken over the option to select the customise landing page once you update your Facebook page to new time line they launched today.

How do you see this change, how will this effect marketing on Facebook and getting likes?

On top of that you can’t use Time Line cover for marketing purposes.

Would be interested to have your thoughts on this

  • @rshahbaz

i think it means we’re all gonna have to be much more proficient at using facebook ads to get “likes.” since that’s still the holy grail for our posts to be seen in the newsfeeds and “shared.”
the ability to “pin” and “star” a top post can be a great way to as for the “like”without “breaking the rules” – and since you can still change the images for the tab thumbnails, perhaps there will be some very creative ways to use those as well.
i’m looking forward to seeing how the big brands approach this, too.
we also have the ability to remove the “cover image” which will get people to our “pin/star” post more quickly, but i certainly wouldn’t advise it. it think the giant cover image can really be used effectively in a variety of ways to get a “story” across… very interesting indeed.

  • I’m looking into ways to best utilize this new change. Stinks you can’t customize landing page.

  • this part is killer.

*Cover photos cannot include:A. Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”. B. Contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section.C. References to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features.D. Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”.Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property

  • Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts. @pegsousa @pegsousa @marygreencny @dennischica

It means all the money people spent on creating landing pages will be lost after 31st March 2012?

  • @rshahbaz

yes, that’s what it is looking like… it appears that will no longer be fan-gated content, either. not sure if that’s good or bad, but getting the “like” is still important, and we’ll all need to keep creatively figuring out how to do that!

  • I wonder if after someone likes you  is that still going to go to the liker’s own newsfeed?

Wow FB changes AGAIN!  Great if you’re a big store and have scads of tech help but tougher for the normal business.

They’re getting the Google attitude fast.

  • I am concerned that each time I think understand how to use my business page it changes again. I am struggling to persuade people to ‘like’ me. Any suggestions on how I can get likers?

  • I was just about to pay someone to create a landing page for me–whew, thanks everyone for saving me some $$$.  Drinks on me…

  • Here’s what some of the big brands have already put on their pages…

    http://creativity-online.com/news/brands-unveil-their-facebook-timelines/233026

  • Seems like it is a big hit against all those businesses whose business was to help set up fan pages

  • I think with the new timeline there are so many more options. But for @charlottemason I would focus on getting traffic to the page, and having decent content for updates, if it’s useful they will return or like it.

  • This change is bugging me a lot. It feels like Facebook is making changes that pretend to be so amazing and fun and fantastic but it’s really just advertising bs in disguise. You can’t use your cover image as an ad, or with a call to action, or to incentivize people to like your page? (Marketing 101: everything needs a call to action). You can’t set a default tab with an offer or a welcome video? Oh, but you can continue to pay Facebook to advertise.

I’m not complaining about Facebook making money but I don’t feel inclined to pretend that any of these changes are for our benefit.

Here’s a stat: less than 1% of people who like a page ever revisit that page. So who are all these people who are supposed to be so impressed by our “stories”? Who’s going to go back and visit our pages just to take a leisurely scroll through the dates we hired new employees or had donuts for breakfast at the office?

The cover image is a big piece of artwork – sans call to action – that will probably be beautifully and expensively designed by many companies and be as meaningless as that Flash intro you’ve been admonished to remove from your website because it doesn’t get people to the point.

I’m curious… how many of you have revisited a friend’s timeline since it’s been released? I’d be interested in knowing if this is something that people do. I know I don’t. The only timeline I’ve ever seen is my husband’s when he yells across the room at me to look at his new cover photo. Do you visit timelines and view people’s histories? Would you do it on a brand page?

I’m feeling like Facebook is a necessary evil at this point. If you’re not playing in their park you’re losing. But it’s really not fun there anymore.

  • Its true you cant incentivize the top image, but the TOS doesnt say anything about incentivizing the “icon buttons” , which BTW, are now customizable.  So, I see page owners starting to turn those into buttons, which will go through to the page.

Yes, I believe that FB has done this to “encourage” page owners to advertise.

The key moving forward, is apps that are social.  I believe thats FB’s strategy, so the eye will follow naturally to the activity, however, I still think there is a need for pages (websites) within the fb page, although more thought is required on how to utilize pages better as a funnel.

  • is it better to have a page or a group?  maybe the group will get more action

  • Great info and thanks for the share all – more limiting than I’d realized… Will be interesting now to see how folks use this space creatively… Have seen a couple pretty ones – but none yet for SM co’s… anyone done anything in the new space yet – would love to view!

  • still can`t find the `like`button on the new timeline setup,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,help!

  • Hello  @lacducoeur

here you can find the like button on this image according to new timeline.,….

  • Thanks for your help, if you would like to send me your url I`ll try to like your page

  • what a great  thread…there is  so much to  learn on this….i  think  the  cover  rules  will be ok  for us  becasue our products are so picture worthy……  i really liked  seeing the  examples   someone posted on here….and the list of  donts…

my  main  worry is  going to  be  the  inside of the page…i never  did anything past the  cover on  my personal page….so im  starting from  scratch on this…

.am i hearing  right?  are  the landing pages  actually  going to  be  gone?

thanks for all the  good info…

  • OK.  I have just set up a ‘welcome’  page and set it so that people get there on their first visit….does this mean that it will go away????  I spent lots of time setting it up (well lots of time learning).  I have been calling it a landing page – is this correct?

I’m not going to stress too much as I haven’t been around long enough to get attached to any particular format but I was kind of pleased with myself for getting this page set up.

One problem I have found though is that my business page doesn’t seem to come up in a search (until it has already been found)  so you have to go through my private page and go across.  Anyone know why this might be?

  • @anitaendersby

hi anita, here is a link to the shortstack page describing the changes to tabs – i think you’ll find it helpful! the short answer is no, fans won’t go to your welcome page first (unless you direct them to that page url from your website or blog) but you can still have fan-gated content. here’s the link – the tab part is down in Q&A:
    http://www.shortstack.com/timeline/

  • Hey,

So no Landing page and no call to action… How do I create a nice tab with a nice logo on it that people can click on to run a campaign or even have a home page on Facebook…? There must be a way? Help!

    Fiona

  • @fiona

you can still have a nice tab – and you can put a call to action on the tab thumbnail (provided you are using a service that allows this vs. their branding) – AND you can also create a post and PIN it to the top of your page for 7 days with a very clear call to action. So there are still some ways to get that “like” it’s just thinking differently about it.

see macy’s facebook page – Win a Million Tab for example - http://www.facebook.com/Macys/app_127966423934872?ref=ts

they are still encouraging the like to see “What’s in store for season 2…”

and while there is no longer a default landing page, you can still link to your welcome fan-gated page URL from your website or blog.

  • It will be very interesting to see what Google+ will do with all this. To many page admins, Facebook is pushing the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ button, and that gives Google some way. They couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity if they paid for it. Might be a good time to really brake in that G+ page.

  • We just have to get better and more creative when it comes to apps. Why not have an app that shows all your apps ex: Start HERE! or the like. Using something like short stack, you could then have all your apps laid out with links.

  • @pegsousa  ~ you’re correct, there is fan-gating for apps (although it’s buggy right now) but no default landing page.

@tracourt ~ that was a really good idea, rather than make people fill their tab area with a bunch of different apps.  One link to a custom page that has links to all other contests/custom pages may be exactly what I do for our pages :)

  • One technique I’ve seen being used for cover images is to use the image or graphic itself to lead the visitor’s eye to the like button. For example, take a look at Coca-Cola’s Facebook page -  https://www.facebook.com/cocacola - Where is the tail of the first C pointing to? The Like button. Take a look at the NY Times - https://www.facebook.com/nytimes - the red staircase leads the eye towards it too. On the Cold Play’s page -  https://www.facebook.com/coldplay - what’s the 3rd guy looking at? Could be the Like button. I’m sure that there are a lot more doing it, but many are not.

On the app graphics, yes, we can design our own to attract the visitor’s eye albeit there isn’t a lot of space to work with.

And on the Photo app icon/graphic, we CAN manipulate that too. As an example, you can see what I’ve done on mine – http://www.facebook.com/ClusterWebDesign. Whenever I upload one or more photos or graphics, I just make sure that the last photo I upload is that red photos graphic (I simply delete the one that exists first and then upload it again.)

  • The One thing that we can use to gain more likes into our pocket would be Facebook cover page.

If we went creative in creating a Facebook cover for our business page then we can see the huge growth in our fanbase.

And now Facebook also allowed to send message, which is one of good key tweak of Facebook page..
