Is this correct? I’ve seen it going around for a while… (5 posts)

  • I have a feeling this statement is not correct, but would like the opinion of the group. Here is the facebook post going around…..again….
Hey everybody. As you all know, I like to keep my FB private except to those I am friends with. So if you all would do the following, I’d appreciate it. With the new FB TIMELINE on its way this week for EVERYONE. . . please do both of us a favor:
Hover over my name above. In a few seconds you’ll see a box that says “Subscribed”. Hover over that, then go to “Comments and Likes” and unclick it.
That will stop all our posts showing up on the side bar for strangers to see. But most important, it limits hackers from invading our profiles. If you repost this I will do the same for you.

  • @michellefontaine Bonjour Michelle,
Here is the link to all information pertaining to the “Subscribe” button on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/about/subscribe

My understanding is that the above statement is correct. Not sure why it specifies to unclick the “Comments and Likes” feature, since if the messages are kept private, I don’t see why it would appear in the ticker (side bar). Perhaps a bug I am not familiar with…

    Hope this helps.

  • Here’s the problem with that message, @michellefontaine.  So when you Like something or comment on someone’s post, that activity will show up in the ticker of  your friends.  So they will see this activity.  This was always how Facebook worked (the activity went into the News Feed before) but some people feel like now their activity is more visible because of the Ticker.  This activity is only shown to people’s friends.  What that post suggests is to uncheck the Comments and Likes so now your friends won’t see that activity in their News Feed.

But if a friend of yours comments on someone else’s post that you aren’t friends with and they have their privacy on that post set to “friend of friends” or Public then you will see the post plus the comments in your Ticker (even though you aren’t friends with the person who originally posted the post – you are just friends with the person who commented on the post).

The post that is circulating is basically meaningless because it is just taking the comment and like notifications out of your own friends’ Tickers.  You always have control over who sees your posts – just your friends or you can set it to your friends of friends.  This is why Facebook spreads is because it connects us to people who you are friends with.  If people want to have a private conversation, do it over e-mail.  Which isn’t really private either since it could always be forwarded :)

  • Thanks so much for your complete answer Andrea!

  • I agree with Andrea,,,MEANINGLESS
