Is there ever to much @tagging? (7 posts)

  • So I have a little situation I have been trying to figure out if it is worth my time or not. I could really use everyone’s expertise on this. Here it goes

The question: When you tag yourself, a page and another page/profile;                   (@profile/@page/@profile/page)does this, in a sense, connect you better but also give a better percentage of people likely to see your post? Also, wouldn’t this be a better way for businesses/organizations/groups to see exactly who will be going to an event? (rather than clicking “going” on the event page)

  • Hey Brando, I’m not sure I get the thinking behind the event participation. How do you meant this should work?

I’m tagging people to ensure they read my post. I do this mainly as response to responses to my original post. Very often you can’t tag people or pages anyway- I still haven’t figured out the reasoning. Sometimes when I try to tag a business page, it works and at other times, it doesn’t.

Another thing I haven’t figured out yet is if the business can see that it has been tagged. I manage two business pages and have tagged the one in the post of the other but couldn’t see it anywhere on biz A’s page or stats. It would be nice for a business to get a notification in case it has been tagged. Maybe this already works and I just haven’t understood how…

  • Hi @claudiapoeckl, I don’t know how many fans you have on your page, but the tagging concept usually works on pages with a good amount of fans, I can’t really say how many, but I’ve seen it work for someone who has over a 100,000 fans. So, I guess the idea is that you can only reach out to a larger crowd if you also have a large following.

  • @brando-hills I do think there can be TOO much tagging but I think it’s a preference thing.  I like tagging my own page from time to time because it does help visibility with your own friends and it makes it easy for people to Like the page right from the post.  I talk about it a little in this post: http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/facebook-page-likes/

But I do think it can be annoying if you overdo it and tag your page all the time.  I think tagging an Event is a good thing for visibility to the Event but I think saying that your going creates a visibility with the others that are going to the Event too.

@claudiapoeckl  Tagging definitely doesn’t always show up to the Page owner which makes it frustrating (I think both for the Page owner who might want to know what’s being said, and for the person who is doing the tagging).  I think in theory it’s supposed to always show up but I think it’s about 50-50.  Sometimes it’s only in the Activity Log and gets filtered out as spam.

  • @claudiapoeckl Thank you for your comment! To help clarify my questions I’ll give you the run down of what I am going through.
Here is the situation I have. I am helping out a local music group thru a music production company that I work for. They have been pushing an important event on a variety of social media outlets to get people aware of the show. I have integrated all of their networks and have been setting up great publicity for the event. As for the event, they are looking to bring in 300 people. So far we have around two hundred. ( Dec.7 is the show so we have only a few more weeks left)  My idea was to have those who are going to be attending the show to tag the band and venue (maybe event) in a post on their profile stating that they can expect them there for the concert, making it more reliable than just presuming they are going because they clicked “going”. Also, if I am able to generate more buzz about the band and can tag the venue, I feel it will reach higher numbers of others who may be interested as well. Again, this was just an idea I thought about while talking with others so I truly appreciate your input. I also thought it would be cool to see if we could get users to post a picture of their ticket or some type of photo with the bands logo that we can share on our page to help hype up the event. Content driven!!

@andrea-vahl I read your publish and am very excited to see I am using a lot of those similar tactics. I also want to thank you for yours response it is always nice to hear others comments. #1 and #3 help give definition to what I am trying to do with my event and am glad to see those are in the top three. What I didn’t see on the top ten list was the ability to share amiable content from other page admins or profiles. I know this is probably a no brainier but I had a first hand experience understanding how this benefited a page. During my work, I saw it was a big win if I shared content that was able to bring up conversations with other fans. Whether it be aspiring artists or major events, this sparked an interest with followers and brought in engagement.

  • Thanks for the explanation,  @brando-hills. Now I get it. Unfortunately I have no figures supporting any statement if tagging like this helps at all. I have tried it a few times but didn’t see any increase in engagement or likes. But if you go for it and your fans actually do tag your event, it would be great to hear back from you how it went…

  • You bet! I’ll keep in touch and let you know what happens. Should be interesting!  @claudiapoeckl
