Is there a way to keep your fan page data when merging with a personal page (13 posts)

  • I have a personal page and a fan page.

I would like to merge the two and roll the personal page into the fan page.

Right now, the personal page has 1400 friends and the fan page only 1200.

From my understanding the page with the higher number of friends will be the one that is merged into? But then I have seen that NO DATA is kept anyways so how does this work?

    Please explain?

I want to keep the data on the fan page as is, NOT loose any of it like all of the photos, posts, history etc.

Is there any way to do this?

I have archived the personal page but can’t find an option to archive the fan page, and remember doing this once before on another page and it basically wiped all of my datat for both and started a fresh new fan page with a new higher like base only. No posts.

    Thank you!

  • The way the merge works now, @sheridanmills is that you can choose which Page you merge the other one into.  I just did a post today on merging Facebook Pages (the slant was for Places but the last steps are the same)  See the image about the merging at the end of the article:  http://andreavahl.com/facebook/the-difference-between-facebook-places-and-facebook-pages-and-how-to-merge-them.php

So what you will need to do is to convert the personal profile into a Page, then merge the two Pages together.  Hope that helps!

Hi Andrea thank you for your reply.

I will read your article shortly, have been researching this for the past 2 hours.

I notice that if you ‘convert’ the personal page into a business page it will need to have less likes than the other page if it is to be merged into the other one – the other one being the primary page which I would like to keep the contents/data/posts of.

Theoretically I can’t do this. As right now my fan page has less.

They are also different names so I am going to have to try and change that to suit.

Most importantly though I am concerned about the content currently on my fan page. I don’t want to loose this is the merger and this is what this whole process is for – to keep that pages content and simply merge the personal page in.

    Make sense?

    :)

  • Absolutely!  Take a look at the merging process I outline in the article @sheridanmills You’ll see that you can choose the “main” page so you can merge something with more Likes into a Page with less likes.  I haven’t had a lot of experience with doing this so I hope it works – I’ve heard from others that it can be glitchy.

    Hi Andrea,

That link didn’t work, could you send again please?

Argh this shouldn’t be this hard, am going around in circles, I have read Facebook’s information about merging 2 similar business pages but was asking about merging a personal page straight into a business page without the conversion step.

I;ve done this before and it was fine and I didn;t have to worry about one with more or less likes etc.

I have two Facebook Pages for the same thing. Can I merge them? Yes, you can merge duplicate Pages so long as they represent the same thing. Please note you can only merge the Page with fewer likes into the one with more likes. To do so:

    1. Go to the Page with more likes. This will be the one you’ll keep.
    2. From the top of your Page, click Edit Page
    3. Select Update Info
    4. From the left sidebar, select Resources.
    5. Click the Merge duplicate Pages link. This link will only appear if you manage two Pages with similar names.
    6. A dialogue will show Pages you manage that qualify to be merged. Select the Page(s) you wish to merge. If you’re merging Pages with a location, they must have the same address information.
Merging Pages combines all your likes and check-ins, but all other content from the Page with fewer likes, such as wall posts, photos and its username, will be permanently deleted. Content on the Page with more likes will remain unchanged, except for the addition of likes and check-ins added from the Page with fewer likes.

The Page with fewer likes will be removed from Facebook and you will not be able to unmerge it.

Will read through you links when you send them, but in the meantime am wondering if I CAN change the name of my existing business page to match the personal page’s name (as the personal page doesn’t allow me to use a ‘magazine’ name etc) and if this is difficult or problematic to do?

I don’t want to try and mess it up.

I know the names have to be similar (or identical depending on which blogs you read) for it to come up under the ‘merge duplicates’ option.

I want to test it but am scared I might get shut down or run out of name changes available for that page and won’t be able to change it back – to the magazine name which it is!

    Help?

  • @andrea-vahl

Also, can we confirm that ALL of the content currently on my business page will remain after I merge the other page into that one?

This is my main concern before anything else.

    Thank you!

  • I changed the link, so it should work now, sorry about that!
    @sheridanmills
You cannot merge a personal page straight into a business page that I’m aware of.  You have to go through the conversion first.

All the content will remain on the Main page you merge the other page into.

I would not change the main Page’s name to be closer to the other personal profile.  I would try and change the personal profile (once you convert it) to match the Page name.  Again, I haven’t had a lot of experience with the conversion of a profile to a page so I don’t know what they allow in terms of name changes when you go through the conversion.  I know you can change a Page name one time if it has over 200 Likes but you need to provide documentation about the business name.

I’m going to bed now :)   And I will actually be on a vacation until Monday so hopefully there may be others who can chime in on this discussion who have had experience with profile conversions.  Good luck!

Thanks Andrea, this all help move me a few steps forward toward a successful merger. I will investigate further and let you know of my findings once all this has been done.

I just had my second business page’s name successfully changed via Facebook (a one time thing only they say) and so now both pages are exactly the same.

‘Merge duplicate pages’ hasn’t come up as an option on my primary page (despite being identical) as I had hoped and so am now stuck with two pages and can’t merge the second one into the primary apparently until I have more likes on my primary.

So I have received wrong information and am now stuck.

Please note, you can ONLY merge the smaller like page into the larger one in the HOPE that your primary pages content is retained. If you try and merge from the other page (NOT the primary page) you will loose all data on both pages from what I can see. Am now waiting again to see what happens at the next step once i have actually somehow collected enough likes on the primary and am eligible to merge the pages.

  • Answer – Yes you can change your name (I did successfully) and yes you can merge a page with more likes into one with less likes via a special link at Facebook – and keep all of the data/posts on the page you are merging into.

    I just did it successfully.
