Is it true that Facebook now requires… (7 posts)

  • … page admins to pay to promote their updates if we want our content to be seen by our fans who have already like our page? and that in order for the fans to continue to see the page’s updates, they have to hover the mouse on the “Like” button near the page name and click “Get Notifications” or create an “Interest List”? (In the drop-down menu select ”ADD TO INTEREST LISTS”. Then create an “interest list”. Or click on “Get Notifications”. When the fans select that interest list or click Get Notifications the fans will again get all of the page posts and not 10% of them)

If it is true how are you communicating this and getting your fans to take that extra step for you?  Thanks in advance for your thought.

PS: If it was up to us we would hit “unlike” to this new feature!

  • Hi there, no it isn’t true that you have to do that. I had a post 2 days ago get over 3000 likes and 400 shares for a page that has 30,000 people on it and is quite seasonal (as to when they are interested in the page) and now is the quietest time of the year.

The issue is many people have seen a reduction in the number of users they are reaching and promoting the post and paying is one way to increase that number.

Great content that creates engagement will also help and facebook are introducing notifications for pages which means your fans can “optin” to being told when ever the page posts.

It’s a funny time at the moment as facebook and marketers try to find a position that they can both achieve their goals. I have no doubt that the “sweet spot” will be found and we will all move forward but remember, Facebook is a business and they are a new public company. It is going to take some time for the right balance to be found but i think they will get there.

In the meantime, plenty of opportunity out there on facebook, you just need to be doing it better than 90% of the pages that are competing for that news feed space.

    Cheers

    Scott

  • Excellent advice @scottlinklater! I’ve tested the promoted post feature a few times and both times had very different results. On one hand the responses were positive and the content spread rapidly. On the other hand, the majority of responses were “why is this even showing up in my newsfeed?”

The promoted posts feature is just starting out and I’m thinking there will be advancements to this in the near future. So don’t give up on it just yet! :)

  • I second that @scottlinklater

The propaganda that surrounds Facebook’s “Promoted Posts” is laughable.

Think about it for a second…

Why would you “ONLY” reach 5-8% of your fans when you update your Facebook page?

It’s because your fans are not all logged in at the same exact time.

And by the time they log in, your post has been buried in hundreds of other “updates.”

When you update your Twitter account, do you think your tweet reaches “EVERY” follower? Definitely not!

However, when you buy a promoted post, you get preferential placement in the news feed… which is why you get additional reach.

  • The “Interest list” makes sure they get the updates for sure. The thing is facebook limited the reach to 15% but if you have a real viral post like Kevin, then you’ll get a lot of reach. For normal posts you get the 15% maximum, if you page is very engaging. I wrote an article on this here http://www.rudibedy.com/blog/facebook-got-greedy-and-its-not-stopping/

  • @rbedy  im  getting over  15%   engagement on   my  normal not paid posts  …im getting over  1000 reach out of  3600 fans….  several times  in the last   10 days…..

so i  dont knw where this  15%  number   is authenticated….

im  counting  the number that appears at the  bottom of the post  saying how  many  fans  the post   was  seen  by….

  • @Ann

I assume you are talking about this page http://www.facebook.com/greenoakantiques

Do you use any kind of ads? This would influence the reach. If you don’t use any ads for any of your posts or page then the reach goes naturally down. On my page the reach was 30% on good posts when I also had ads supporting the page but not all posts, when I stopped for 1 month or 2 the reach got down to 5%.

Is there a bigger page which shares your posts? If there is a page with let’s say 100.000 likers and they share, your total reach is bigger. Their reach + yours.

So without having any kind of ad for a long period the reach goes down. I think a factor is also the size of the community on that page.
