Is a Facebook page necessary? (10 posts)

  • I currently curate business and entertainment industry content in support of my blog, E.i. Geek, on my personal Facebook account. Is it more beneficial for me to set up a separate Facebook fan/business page to do that, or is it sufficient to continue using my personal account?

  • @mellissathomas deinitely mellissa, it is not just beneficial but necessary as well to use facebook page for any activity other than personal. If you want to promote your business or cause, you have to do it via fb pages and not your personal profile this is what facebook says under its terms and conditions of services. I have seen many cases breaching this guideline are banned by facebook or forced to switch to page instead of personal profile for business use.

    And yes there are lots of benefits of page : You can create your brand, you can spread message of your business, stay connected with your existing customers and generate leads and prospectus. And more more……

  • @moinshaikh Thanks for the clarification and reminder, Moin. SME had actually done an article on Fb pages last year listing an example of a breach in the TOU.

    Did you start off the way I am (transitioning from one to the other), or did you launch your Fb page at the same time that you launched your business?

  • @mellissathomas Since i am myself social media analyst and IT professional, i started off with the page itself though there are many guys to whom i know use fb profile for business, although there are no report of fb taking action against my these contacts but still i have heard of some people getting hard time for profile for business so i prefer we shall do it the way it is mentioned. i know doing it via profile seems easier to those who are not experienced with page but once you are off the page, you’ll get to know that using facebook marketing via page is much easier than that of profile

  • @mellissathomas I think it is much better that you separate personal profile from the business profile. I have seen a lot of “personal” profiles that are used for business ( those profile with fake or brand names, created just to spread the word ).It is a lot better to have brand page, where you can easily interact with customers and fans…

  • goood  points….and  why  risk   losing all  your  work and  contacts   WHEN  AND IF  facebook  decides  to   strictly  enforce their  rules…..?   also  it looks  amature , uninformed  or  even  a little  dishonest….

  • Wow, I never thought of it that way, Ann. Thanks for your input. I’m glad I asked. @annfurnivall

  • Thanks, Ivan! @ivanjovi

    Good deal, Moin. I know what I need to do then. :) @moinshaikh

  • Great points everyone!  I do think you can talk about your business some on your personal page and have that open to subscribers (I just wrote an article about this for Social Media Examiner and it will be coming out in a couple weeks),
    @mellissathomas

    But really, it is good to have a business page for your major promotions.  Plus you can’t advertise a personal page or run contests or have applications that highlight special things.  So I do think a Page is the way to go for most businesses.

  • @andrea-vahl Thanks, Andrea. I’ll be working on my Facebook page soon now that I understand the difference. Looking forward to your article. :)
