I’m looking to network! – Controversial Niche (18 posts)

  • Some people support the niche, while others don’t because they don’t know any better. But the fact sits there.

    • There’s no argument that it contains far less ingredients.
    • Non-existant, “death” rate compared to it’s competitor (thousands a day).
    • One of the biggest tobacco companies are in on the niche now.
Yeah, I’m talking about the electronic cigarette. I’ve been in this particular niche for 4 years now. And I’ve probably saved a thousand lives. Woo! I say that because it actually is an accomplishment to me.

I’m posting, because, I’ve finally established something that can have a serious impact. Something that I would absolutely love some help with.

I’m not afraid to say I’m new, but I’m definitely not dumb :)

For this section of the “Facebook Club” I’m really hoping that there are some of you, that see the potential behind what I do, and the “word” that I strive to share to the public. We’re all here for marketing purposes. Technically, we can’t make it with out networking, or help from one another.

I’m not very sure how to reach out, and ask, so this is going to be a sub-par attempt haha

Is there anyone that’d be willing to network with us (ECCR) to get the word out about our facebook …and quite possibly our website?

Of course it’s not something that you can just slap on your facebook wall, but I’m sure that someone, somewhere has an idea how they could share or help in this area.

    Let me know your thoughts?

Just a small disclaimer, I know I could have written a book, but…I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time. And I really didn’t want to just make this a huge post about “me”. More just a little bit of a pitch of the idea, and ask for help. :)

    Thanks,

    Raymond

  • So this is a “networking” group, there’s 4,000 members on the site, and this was posted 24 hours ago.

Is the subject to controversial? lol

    Nobody has anything to say?

    I’m stumped.

  • Hi @riddlelo,

I think you should make your question more simple in order to get some good tips. What is exactly that you need help for?

If it is Facebook oriented, this is the right place. If it is business oriented, you should go with direct questions to the Small Business Club where I think you will get better feedback.

Anyways..I’m more than happy to help.

    Max.

  • I think the other issue @riddlelo  is that it sounds like you are hoping that someone will promote your product.  We may not have the right niches for that and it is also seems a bit one sided.

You had also asked for some help on what you can do to promote this.  What have you tried so far?  Have ads worked for you?  Do you have happy customers?  Are your customers interacting with you?  It looks like you have some good interaction on your page but are those your customers?  Are there other pages like yours?  Are you posting on other like-minded pages where your potential customers are hanging out?

What other ideas do people have for promoting this product on Facebook?

  • Ok, let me jump in here too!  I agree with @maximiliano-garcia and @andrea-vahl in that, ‘what are you asking for?’    Now for a few more of my thoughts:

#1:  Communicating with a Dragon Fly just doesn’t cut it for me.  Facebook is all about being personal.  When someone uses an object for an avatar – I can’t connect personally.  You’re a stay-at-home dad so I know you’ve got personality!  Also, quitting smoking is a personal issue, you’ve got to join them at a personal level.

#2:  Using the term ‘controversial’ is an excellent hook!  Thanks for that tip because it works to get people to click to look.  But once in here I see an advertisement of sorts.

#3:  There is also nothing personal about your Facebook page.  Are you a former smoker? Do you know how difficult it is to quit smoking?  Have you lost people, friends & family because of smoking?  People need to relate to you and your product.

#4: Also, adding your website link to your Facebook page will encourage people to click over to your website and possibly get some click-throughs.  Do any of those products have ‘samples’ or ‘trials’ – if so, share the information.

Okay, I’ll quit here.  Just wanted to provide a little food for thought.

  • Oh, and I forgot to add:  This is the Holiday Season, not the best time of year to get a lot of action on the web.  Many people are taking a break from the hum-drum routine of sitting in front of a computer screen to actually leave the house and do some shopping! lol

HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and yours.

  • @maximiliano-garcia  What is exactly that you need help for?

Honestly, I’m not even sure of that. ^_^ But if I had an idea, I’d say I’m looking for tips to expand our “facebook fanbase”.

This particular niche, isn’t just something that people are seeking out. It’s something you have to throw it to and if they catch it they’ll stick to it. It’s a matter of choice.

It’s definitely Facebook orientated. I don’t know how to reach out to people for their “likes” & “shares” to spread the word.

My “simple” question: How can I reach out to more people on Facebook than I already have? What is the best route? What ideas do you or anyone have for that matter, have that could give the page a boost?

    -Raymond

  • @riddlelo I have found success running contests/sweepstakes/giveaways. I have used Wildfire and find them to have good pricing options, especially for small businesses. The also have nice features and work with the big names out there. We have gained a lot of email addresses, as well as Facebook fans. We sent an email out to our base list and then promoted the contest on FB through a promoted post.

We also use sponsored stories which I find work really well. I think Facebook ads in general are a waste of money for most people, but sponsored stories are good because they target friends of fans you already have, and the friends are more likely to be interested in what you have.

Also be sure you are following best practices on FB. There are lots of great articles all the time. I subscribe to Social Media Examiner and Hubspot, Follow Mari Smith on FB, and keep tabs on some other places like ShortStack and Wildfre.

    Best of luck,

    Holly

  • @andrea-vahl “it sounds like you are hoping that someone will promote your product.”

There is no “product” – I think you may have not actually looked into what I’m saying, maybe you didn’t visit the site? I’m not sure. But there is definitely no product that I’m trying to sell. More like…I’m trying to raise awareness. Awareness, that the products that are being sold in gas stations, are putting a horrible taste in peoples mouths, because they don’t know any better. <–what I’m trying to prevent.

I’m an advocate for electronic cigarettes. I’ve spent well over $3,000 in products to review, web design, and much more, just putting together, what I have. Now…I need to get it out in front of the public’s eye.

You said: “also seems a bit one sided.”

Well, it sort of is. If “maybe” someone here was working on the same niche, it wouldn’t be, but there is a wide range of products out there that you can “network” with other people to promote. But I’m not promoting. I’m not selling. I’m referring people to real, brutally honest reviews, to help them make a better buying decision. I’m not sure if I completely understood what you meant by what you said about being one sided. However, I do know that if there had been a place out there on the web that I’d have known about before buying my first e-cigs, that would have told me if they were any good,  I would LOVED to know about it before I wasted $100 on a P.O.S <– sorry. I’m sure you if interested in them, would prefer the same. And that’s what I represent. A consumers (for the consumers) website.

You asked: “Have ads worked for you?”

No. I have yet, to find an ad network that would promote this particular niche.

You also said: “It looks like you have some good interaction on your page but are those your customers?”

Yes, I have “some” interaction. But no they are not my customers. I’m a well known person, and most of those people know me, as well as support my cause and decide to share/like what I post in hopes that it’ll help the public.

You asked: “Are there other pages like yours?”

Yes, but they are competitors, and nasty ones at that. They don’t want to promote this type of site, because it’ll bring financial ruin to their bank accounts. They get paid by certain companies to rank products in certain positions. I do it by free will and actually testing the products. The whole point. To give honest reviews, so the people know what product is worth their money. There are WAY to many people mis-leading people right now. I wouldn’t care if I made a dime from my site, although yes, I earn commissions, but the fact remains. They are honest reviews. I’m not pulling a scheme, and saying “here’s the best product” hurry….buy it….no, I’m saying “this product works well, but there’s a less expensive one over there, that trumps this one, in almost every area.”  ‘Nuff said. Ultimate conclusion – I can’t network with other people on facebook that are solely using facebook to SELL a product, earn a commission, and pocket some money.

WOW! You’ve got some pretty good questions :)

Last one: “Are you posting on other like-minded pages where your potential customers are hanging out?”

Yes. And no. Some consider it spam, while others say “I’ve tried them, but they were nasty” and they won’t even consider even “look” at the website, because they’ve got a bad taste in their mouth. Which is what makes this hard. Those people with a bad taste….will most likely never quit smoking tobacco cigarettes. All because someone somewhere, put together a really crappy product. To make a quick buck. My question….if I burned you with a lighter, are you going to let me burn you again? No. And neither will this audience/crowd/market.

Thanks for the questions, and input.

Sorry for the rant, and run-on sentences. It’s difficult to do punctuation with an iPhone ^_^

  • @melowout- “Communicating with a Dragon Fly just doesn’t cut it for me.”

    I’m sorry? I didn’t get to that yet? O_o

You said: ” Using the term ‘controversial’ is an excellent hook!  Thanks for that tip because it works to get people to click to look.  But once in here I see an advertisement of sorts.”

Thanks. No advertisement. It’s a link to who ever cares to see what the website is about. Maybe look at the “About Us” page? :) And honestly….if I wanted to advertise, this would be the last place I would. We’re all here for a reason right? To market. So typically when you enter something like this, you know there are people here selling something, or promoting something as well as seeking advice. Be my guest though. Click the link, buy something, it may help you, and that’s all I want, is to help people make a better decision. :) Also….in any event that someone posts a link in here asking for advice, it’s a sort of advertising, because it’s in front of people, and if they want to help, what are they going to do? Click the link. lol

Thanks, for your “Food for thought” :)

Happy holidays to you and yours aswell!

  • @hollywade – WOW!!

Your post was a gold mine. Thank you so much for putting your time and effort into that post. Seriously, invaluable information. Thank you!!

@hollywade said  “We also use sponsored stories which I find work really well. I think Facebook ads in general are a waste of money for most people, but sponsored stories are good because they target friends of fans you already have, and the friends are more likely to be interested in what you have.”

This is almost exactly what kind of help I was looking for.

There are just so many people out there that are ranting and raving that they have reached success, and done so much, and they are here, or there, to help, but they don’t disclose information like that. That was genuine, and I respect that. :) Above and beyond great post! Feel free to post more!! lol

  • For newbies, PROMOTED POSTS and OFFERS are of little value until you reach the 400 LIKES that are required.

Looking at your Facebook Page, have you LIKED any other pages?  That section is missing.  I usually look to see what other people are LIKING to see if there is a common bond.

Also, have you LIKED your own page from your profile and do your Page posts show up on your profile so people can interact from their profiles?

@hollywade Thanks for the tip on Wildfire.  I’m still climbing that ladder here – rung by rung and haven’t reached that rung yet, so it is helpful information.

@riddlelo  I’m wondering why you call this a controversial niche?  Is the controverse between smokers/non-smokers or between smokers & ecigarettes?

Also, my compliments on your website, very well laid out and easy to navigate. Great job putting all that information together.  You’ve done one heck of a lot of work!

  • @melowout – thank you – seriously. My business partner and I spent 4 months testing different ecigs, writing reviews, creating videos, and designing the website. We are actually revamping it yet again, after finding a few quirks that were not fond of. It was a lot of work. Thank you for your kind words :)Back on subject….You ask why I call it controversial? Well it’s a bit if both, and I’m glad you say it the way you did. Shows you’ve got an “idea” of what’s going on.Controversial between smokers and non smokers because the non smokers don’t see the benefits behind ecigs, and often argue over something they know almost next to nothing about. Example would be Nicotine Addiction. Non smokers will often rebel against smoking period. Yet the ecig doesn’t emit any carbon monoxide, odor, or actual “smoke” but when it comes to the bar scene or a public market place, they will frown upon ecig usage because to them your still “smoking” and 9 times outta 10 they are against smoking period. This they will try and stop you at any cost. Telling mangers of establishments they are offended and what not. Then ecig users get hell for using the tobacco alternative, yada yada, yada I’m sure you get the point.Next, you have a battle between ecig users and tobacco smokers. Some tobacco smokers, frankly don’t care at all about their health, and when approached by someone using an ecig, sometimes things will escalate dependent in the persons views or interactions with the devices. They’ll make remarks to an individual about ecigs not being safer than regular cigs. Which is definitely and undoubtedly a no brainier argument. Seeing that ecigs contain 4 main ingredients as apposed to the 4,000+ ingredients often found in tobacco cigs. C’mon….I could argue it all day and night til the next morning and beyond. But most people who smoke tobacco cigs only speak like this because they are lacking the knowledge of the ecig. Sometimes even saying “you’ll die sooner” smoking that ecig, than I smoking tobacco cigs. Why? Because there is a lot of misunderstanding. Again…lack of knowledge about the product. Then discouraging the person using it. What they don’t know or understand, is which ever way you try to put it, ecigs are far safer than tobacco cigs. The controversy here is that tobacco smokers think that the ecig is a hoax and they don’t know any better. They would though if they’d do their research, not everyone does that though sadly :( . So instead they shun users.I don’t know if much of this made sense or not. But I do know that it’s 2 a.m here and my eyelids are forcing themselves shut. Ill be back tomorrow.-Raymond

  • Ok Raymond, yes it does make sense.  I don’t necessarily agree with all of your statements, but I do understand.

AND, I noticed I’m engaging with a human now!  Thanks for adding the photo!

Now, here’s an idea for you and your Facebook Page.  Instead of continuing this conversation here, why not take it over to your Page and get some interaction going on?

So, I popped over and LIKED your page and now I’m going to throw in a comment (like the one above) and we can start engaging in a dialogue.  My friends and those who’ve LIKED my page (some of them anyway given the 17% reach) may also join the conversation – which might help to boost your numbers and engagement.   It is a start!

On Facebook Pages – keep your comments short, about 5 lines or so.  You can also take pieces of your response here – and either pose it as a question, or just make a statement.

  • @melowout I don’t necessarily agree with all of your statements”

    See? Controversial :) Hahaha

  • @melowout – I think my business partner thought your post was spam, I just asked him if he’d gotten any posts, and said he deleted one. ^_^ Sorry, bout that.

  • @melowout – I think my business partner thought your post was spam, I just asked him if he’d gotten any posts, and said he deleted one. ^_^ Sorry, bout that.

  • @riddlelo  Okay, so I just answered the question posted on your page… a lead-in for you to act upon!

Now, to get more people interacting on your Page – did you thank me for LIKING your Page, check out my Page or Like it?   Certainly there must be something on my page you could LIKE, SHARE or COMMENT about, right?  When you comment, comment as your page, others might click through and join your page too if you make it interactive where others feel they can participate or engage in the conversation.

If you happen to LIKE my Page – be sure to do it from your profile page so I see a rise in the number of LIKES.  Always encourage people to LIKE your page from their profile if you ever want to reach that 400 number.
