Huge Reach Increase (17 posts)

  • I’ve just experienced a huge surge in my reach (as of today’s insights) that takes my reach from about 60K to over 150k. As I look through the insights, it was not due to one of my own posts, but seems to be from a post by someone else about my page. I cannot locate a post that received anywhere near that level of response on my own timeline. Is there any way to track the source of the additional reach down? Could it have been from a share of one of my own posts that simply isn’t registering in my insights? Thanks in advance for the assistance!

  • @chrislay

    Hi Chris,
Congrats on the big boost in reach!  That’s always nice.  Reach can be broken down into 3 categories:

    • Organic – The number of people who’ve seen your post (can be fans or non-fans).
    • Viral – The number of people who saw the post via a friend.
    • Paid – The number of people that have seen your post through either an ad or sponsored story.
So reach is specifically talking about your posts, not posts people made about your page.  The increase could be contributed to the time you made the post, if someone shared/liked your post and their friends saw the post or if you had an ad driving traffic to a post.
Everything should register in your insights (in this case under reach) but since the roll-out of Timeline, I’ve found things not to be super consistent.
Without being able to look at the analytics I can only provide what I know of Facebook Insights and some guesswork but I hope it helps!

  • Very cool, @chrislay!  Hmm I would think you could track it down because of the shared posts, like  @iamconsulting  Your page would have to specifically mentioned in the post either through a share or a tag.

  • @chrislay DID  you  figure it out  chris?  the  same thing  happened to  my page today….  reach went  from about  2k to  7k…..  and  it  wasnt  anything obvious  .no  ad, no special post, i couldnt  see  anything unusual in the  insights   ..im  going to try and look at all the things they mentioned in this  thread…????   maybe  pinterest…

  • @chrislay

Have you checked your “posts by others” to see if someone tagged your page?

    Paulino

  • Thanks for all of the responses. Unfortunately, still cannot figure it out. @iamconsulting, none of my posts had more than 17k reach individually, the insights specifically say that it is from viral reach on a “post by others”, yet I look over all of the posts by others on my page and tags during that time and see nothing that would warrant that kind of reach. I’m happy to have the reach, but I’m nervous that it is some sort of bug.

  • WOW that’s just great! Congrats to @chrislay for his great triumph!  Hope you are able to figure it out so you can keep doing it.

Are you consistent with the time you submit your posts or do you usually post randomly?

  • @systaley and  @andrea-vahl thanks for the congrats. I’d love to celebrate, except I still can’t explain it!! My single biggest post in the way of reach is at 18k, but my reach just keeps jumping up. It just broke 200k.

I post fairly consistently, usually 3 times a day on average and I’m constantly testing different times to find the best times and types of posts for my audience. (i.e. some times are better for likes, others for more interaction like comments and shares). My target audience is teenagers, so catching them right after school can be good for likes but bad for shares (since you still can’t share posts via mobile).

Anyway, It seems as though it will remain a mystery. If anyone encounters the same thing or has additional insights (pun) as to why this would happen, please let me know!

    Thanks,

    Chris

  • @chrislay Hi Chris, this happened to me starting on the 2nd April well.  The only explanation that I have is that I began syndicating my blog posts through @Business2Community on that day.  I’m not sure if this is a glitch in Insights reporting or not or if my syndication has anything to do with it (I’m also syndicated via Networked Blogs), but if I’m gaining reach via syndication then I’m not going to complain!

Anyway, I’ll keep a close eye on it and see if anything comes by way of explanation.

    Cheers!

  • OK, just ran into an article shared by my friend @jewelfry:

    http://www.allfacebook.com/facebook-page-insight-2012-04
Here’s a quote from the article:
So, what does this mean? Well, your numbers are about to go way up, particularly for your most viral content. Whether or not Facebook will apply this change retroactively is important. If there’s no retroactivity, it will be impossible to determine growth and improvement of your reach at the point of change. And many will undoubtedly incorrectly connect their growth to timeline.”
Makes sense to me now, hope it does for you as well.
    Cheers!

  • @ideabloke, thanks, this article definitely addresses my question!

Still wishing I could see this change reflected in the reach by individual post, but maybe that will be phase 2 of this change.

  • This is a very peculiar case, i have a page which i have not done anything on for about 5months, infact i’m thinking of deleting the page, that is how inactive the page is. But yesterday i noticed a reach of 7,500; i was perplexed, i should it’s a glitch with Insights or something

  • @dannish247 Dan, see the link to the post addressing the reason for this behavior in my previous post above.

    Cheers!

  • @ideabloke Oh i see, Thanks

  • i couldnt  get the link. just an error  notice…

..  just like to add…my  big  raise  was  about  april 3  too..quite a  coincidence in timing  with the other 2  examples……..  now its  going down…

  • @ideabloke thanks  randy…great link….

  • You’re welcome,  @annfurnivall hope you have a fab weekend!
