How To Track Visitors,Leads & Customers Generated From Fan Pages (53 posts)

Topic tags: Analytics, Insights, tracking
  • Hi guys,Does anyone here know whether is it possible to track visitors,leads and customers generated from our facebook fan pages? I remembered i read somewhere that we can create a tracking url to our landing pages using some kind of wordpress plugin from HubSpot.

  • @louisteoh ~ my site statistics show referral pages.  I look at it to see what kind of traffic is coming my way from facebook.

  • @louisteoh @dedimason

    I use WordPress to create my pages, this combined with Google Analytics allows me to find out how users interact with the page explore demographics & track sales funnels etc…

  • @louisteoh are you using wordpress? I am tracking visit to my page directly into my google analytics account. Are you trying to do this?

  • Yes @moinshaikh,I used WP to create my pages and i just realized i already have a google analytics account which i didn’t use for some time. Thanks for the reminder.By the way,may i know what’s the process for me to add my other FB page to my google analytics account? Thanks.

  • @louisteoh

    I just looked at your page and I see that is pulling from  WordPress.

    To add  analytics to your page go to your dashboard and edit the header of the theme your using and put your analytics code just before the tag.

    Or you could just install a plugin which is a lot easier. :-)

  • @louisteoh nice to know i helped you!

    I will show you step by step guide on adding fb to ga soon.

  • @scottmadden, what’s the process for installing the plugin and which specific plugin to use?

  • @louisteoh

    I would recommend the “All in One SEO Pack” It is one of the better ones out there.

    Here are instructions on how to install a plugin http://codex.wordpress.org/Managing_Plugins

    Here is a video to show you show to set it up once you have it installed http://semperfiwebdesign.com/blog/all-in-one-seo-pack/seo-tutorial-video-for-all-in-one-seo-pack/

  • Does All-in-One SEO pack track analytics, @scottmadden?  I use Jetpack to track my analytics on my blog.  I can see when people are coming in from Facebook but just wondering how to use AIO SEO for analytics – I just use it to add keywords.

  • @andrea-vahl

    when it comes to analytics the All-in-One SEO only places the UI tracking code in what ever template you are using for your site.

    To check your sites stats you will need to login to your analytics account, If you don’t have an account you can set one up here https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=analytics&userexp=signup&hl=en

    Recently Google performed a major over haul on the analytics interface. you can watch a 6 part recorded webinar series (each part is about an hour long)  on how to use it here  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulr9eK4er-Y&list=PL8CAAA05A0C16E5EC

  • Hi @moinshaikh, i was just wondering how soon can you show me the guide?

    @scottmadden, i’m not a very techie guy so please bear with my silly questions. I already have a google analytics account for my homepage which is a squeeze page i created some months ago.Now that i’ve 2 fan pages(which were created from a subdirectory of my homepage) to track,i was wondering if i can just go to the Admin section of my analytics account to change the Profile and Property settings to one of my fan pages (i don’t think i can’t change both my fan pages in the same account) ? But if i can do that then what about the original tracking code which i believed is tagged to my squeeze page? What must i do to make sure that the original tracking code can be used for my fan page?
    To track my 2nd and subsequent fan pages, what’s the process ?

  • @louisteoh

    If your homepage (squeeze page) and your 2 fan pages are in the same wordpress install you should be good to go.

    Send me the URLs of the 3 pages and I will check the code for you

  • @scottmadden, if that’s the case then how do i get separate analytics for each of them because i can only see what would appear to be an overall analytics for all the 3 sites?  The urls for all 3 are: http://www.thisislouisteoh.com
    https://www.fb.com/homebasedonlinebusiness
    https://www.fb.com/learnsocialmediasecrets

  • @louisteoh sorry for the delay mate but i was in process of collecting the pieces. Anyway, here is the steps:
    >> Login to your google analytics>> Copy your website’s id something like UA-XXXXXXXX-X and paste it into analytics code box in the following url: http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/>> Next enter facebook.com in Domain on Analytics box in the form in above url>> Next, in the Page Link, paste your fb page url.  For example to track visits to my fb page like tab i pasted https://www.facebook.com/Intesols?sk=app_4949752878

    >> Now, give a suitable page title in the next text box. Something like FB Likes etc. This will show up in google analytics profile.

    FInally, hit the generate code button and copy the code and then carefully post it at the bottom of your facebook page. To do this, you need to go to your facebook page’s static fbml app, edit setting, there you will have hmtl box to write code. Just paste the code here. Save all. AND YOU’RE DONE!

    Let me know if it helps you.

  • @moinshaikh, you mentioned ” copy the code and then carefully post it at the bottom of your facebook page. To do this, you need to go to your facebook page’s static fbml app, edit setting, there you will have hmtl box to write code.”  You see, i created my fan pages using wordpress. So, where exactly can i find my page static fbml app? Sorry i’m not a very techie guy.
    I’m trying to see if @scottmadden‘s method or yours is a better choice for me to do it. For now, it would appear your method is much simpler.

  • @louisteoh for that, first can you tell me if you have any landing page using static fbml? If so then only it will work else sorry :(

    Can you show me your fb page url ?

  • @moinshaikh, I do have landing pages for both my fan pages but i don’t know if they’re using fbml because i don’t even know what that is LOL. Told you i’m not a techie guy.Anyway, you can help me to verify it.My fan pages urls are :

    https://www.fb,com/homebasedonlinebusiness

    https://www.fb.com/learnsocialmediasecrets

    My homepage is http://www.thisislouisteoh.com

    Thanks.

  • @louisteoh Login to your fb account, switch to page (use facebook as page) now go to edit area by clicking on button edit page. There go to apps section from that vertical menu. Now refer this screenshot of my page’s app: http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/1.jpg

    if your landing page (newsletter subscription form in your case) is built using static fbml, you’d see static fbml app icon like in the image, circled in red. If it is so, go ahead, click on go to app as you can see in next image here: http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/2.jpg

  • @louisteoh Fbml was Facebook’s web language for creating custome landing pages, it allowed you added HTML code and then have unique custom pages but I believe it was stopped and Facebook now allows you to use iFrames which means you can host your files on your server and pull them into Facebook.In order to do all @moinshaikh has said, just check your page code or get your webmaster to do this and then add the generated tag.If you’re having issues doing this, let me know and I can help you out, just send me a message.

    Once you are there, you’ll see a box which would have some fbml code/programming code. NOW… in this box go to last line of the code, press enter so that some 1 or 2 lines are left blank and now finally past that code which you copied from ga.webdigi.co.uk to get tracking code.

    That’s done!

  • @adegbengaagoro you can refer to image 3 here to know where exactly to past that code:  http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/3.jpg

  • @moinshaikh, it looks like my pages aren’t created using fb static fbml as i don’t see any similar image as yours. They’re created using iframes.So, it seems i may not be able to use your method, can i?

    @adegbengaagoro, can you please elaborate on your suggestion as i’m not very clear about it? Thanks.

  • @louisteoh Sorry I’m just responding was in a meeting.

    First off, I was able to ascertain that your facebook Welcome tab didn’t load anything and the “Click Here: Free Ebook” is an iFrame app pulling information from your server located at http://thisislouisteoh.com/myfbpages/?page_id=5

    The url indicates that its a Wordpress Site but I’m not sure as alot of the source code is processed on the server and I can’t say if its a wordpress site or a html site but this is what you need to do;

    WORDPRESS:
    1. Log in to your admin
    2. Navigate to the page that this information is on
    3. Click on the source-code icon, which is similar to the last icon when you are typing in a reply here in Social Media Examiner Clubs
    4. Paste the html code generated from webgidi i.e. <img src=”…. /> code at the very top
    5. Save and you’re good

    REGULAR HTML
    1. Go to http://www.net2ftp.com
    2. Log in to your server
    3. Navigate to the “myfbpages” folder
    4. Edit the file that is serving the information to facebook
    5. Paste the html code generated at the very top of all the code you see.

    It should work now.

    Hope it was helpful.

  • @louisteoh I just checked again and discovered your site is Wordpress based.

  • @louisteoh may be. But hold on, i will find out if it works with iframes.

  • @moinshaikh Yes you’re right that is the location to add it but I have also realized that you can add the code at any level in your html code and it would still work.

  • @adegbengaagoro, currently i can see some analytics already in my Google Analytics account. The only thing is i don’t know whether that analytics is for only my homepage which is the squeeze page or ALL 3 of them i.e my homepage & my 2 fan pages. If it’s for ALL 3 of them then will what i’m going to do as per your suggestion upset my original Google Analytics setup. I’m not sure if i’ve put it correctly for you to understand.

  • @adegbengaagoro, what i meant by ‘currently’ is i already have a Google Analytics account much earlier when i first created my homepage for the squeeze page. Subsequently i think i created my 2 fan pages via a subdirectory of my homepage url.

  • @louisteoh What you should do is create separate Google analytics profiles for your Facebook pages and then use that code instead of using the Analytics code for your website, that way you can track them more effectively.

    If you want to track each page, just create a profile for the pages in question.

    @moinshaikhIt works with iFrames, I have tried it out and collected data.

  • @adegbengaagoro great to hear it. But mate louis is not that much techy person so i afraid if he can integrate it in iframe tab or not.

    @louisteoh are you able to repeat above steps for your iframe tab. The only difference in the process is instead of static fbml app you will find static iframe tab under your apps menu in page. There you will have to do some stuff. Are you ready? If yes, let me know so that i can guide you further.

  • @adegbengaagoro, when you said to create a separate analytics profile do you mean i create a new google analytics account so that i won’t be using my original tracking code that’s tagged to my homepage?

  • @moinshaikh, I don’t see any static iframe tab in my page Apps menu except for one that read ‘louis fan page’ & ‘my social media success’ respectively for both my pages but when i click on the ‘Go to app’ link i get this message:

    Error
    Sorry, the application you were using is misconfigured. Please try again later.

    Message for Developers Only:
    To fix this error, please set your Canvas URL / Secure Canvas URL in the application settings editor.Once it has been set, your users will be redirected to that URL instead of this error page.

    So, what does that mean?

  • @louisteoh alright no worries, i was just looking for some other ways to track fb in google analytics and i found something very useful. Forget this stuff. Google has launched new version of google analytics which lets user track fb, twitter and g+ data. Google calls this social tracking. However it will need you to change your existing google analytic code in your website. I have yet not tried this one as i am getting reports using above method. But if you wish you can try this method. More information is on:  http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/how-to-track-tweets-facebook-likes-and-more-with-google-analytics/

    I again say, if you still insist following above first method, either you can add iframe tab (i can assist you in it) or you can give me admin access to your page for temporary time, till i get the job done for you.Basically i am in India now, and here it is going to be 9 in the night so i may not be able to respond to your next reply but i will surely be there with you to assist you in every possible manner next morning.Thanks, :)

  • @moinshaikh, you’re just about 2 hrs before my time here in Malaysia. Let’s keep in touch tomorrow morning over skype then. My skype username is louisteoh56. What’s yours ?

  • @louisteoh no you don’t need to create another Google Analytics account.

    1. Login to Google Analytics
    2. Click on Admin
    3. You’ll see a new Account button [Click on it]
    4. Account Name – louisteoh on facebook | Website URL – facebookpage url | Click appropriate and create
    5. You will be given a Google Analytics code which you should use in generating the html tracking img code on http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/

  • @adegbengaagoro, thank you very much for your help. It’s getting late now.I’ll complete the task tomorrow and see how it goes. thanks again.

    @moinshaikh, thank you to you too. I’ll try your suggested 1st method first and see if it works. Hope you don’t mind guiding me should i face any roadblock in implementing the steps.

  • @louisteoh Glad to assist, that’s why we have the clubs to help each other out of jams. Have a great night’s rest. Its 5:51pm my time

  • @louisteoh you are always welcome, glad to help you all the way!

  • @moinshaikh , @adegbengaagoro, Am i right to understand that there’re now 2 methods i can paste the code generated from  http://ga.webdigi.co.uk/  which are : a) to paste it in the iframe tab as suggested by moinshaikh and b) to paste it in wordpress where i created the fan pages as suggested by adebengaagoro? i’m trying out @adegbengaagoro wordpress method but i’m not able to locate the source code icon from wordpress where i created my 2 fan pages. Can you please,if possible, show me a screenshot of how it looks like exactly ?

    @moinshaikh, as for your method, i’ve the following message when i clicked on the iframe tab which i mentioned to you earlier:
    Error
    Sorry, the application you were using is misconfigured. Please try again later.

    Message for Developers Only:
    To fix this error, please set your Canvas URL / Secure Canvas URL in the application settings editor.Once it has been set, your users will be redirected to that URL instead of this error page.

    Why am i not seeing the same thing as you showed me in your screenshot? By the way, what’s a canvas url/secure canvas url? How do they look like?  TThanks for putting up with me, guys. I really need to get this fixed.

  • @louisteoh you are right, there are two methods.To add iframe tab and to paste that tracking code into this installed iframe tab follow steps below: (refer images as well)
    >>  Go to your fb page search box on top side, type iframe tab (image 1) >>  Select and Install Static Iframe Tab (you will be asked to use fb as your profile username, just click on use facebook as XXXXX (your username) >>  Install iframe page tab (image 2) to one of your page by selecting page name from the list, click add page tab button (image 3)>> Now iframe would have installed to the page, and you would see its setting pane, (if not, go to edit page link ->then app area of page -> then select static iframe tab -> and then click on setting link)Here, in the page source option, select HTML and in the box beneath it, paste that google anaytics code which you got yesterday from ga.webdigi.co.uk(image 4)

    Image 1: http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/11.jpgImage 2: http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/21.jpg Image 3: http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/31.jpgImage 4: http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/4.jpg Finally click on save to save all the stuff and you’re done!

  • @moinshaikh, thank you very much for the effort. These’re a much better steps to follow. I’ve one question though. Since i already have a Welcome page tab for each of my 2 fan pages, will what you’re suggesting for me to do upset everything i already have cause i intend to track my Welcome pages?

    If your method won’t upset my current Welcome pages, then is the process for pasting the tracking code for my 2nd fan page the same ?

  • @louisteoh good question, i didn’t thought of it. I am testing on possibilities. wait for a while

  • @moinshaikh, i’ve another question.If it’s ok for me to proceed to install the static iframe tab, does this mean that it’ll appear as additonal new tab in my fan page? If so, then how can i transfer what i’ve, which is the video and opt-in form, in my current Welcome tabs to this new iframe tab ? I really hope i don’t have to go thru that as it may be quite a technical process.

  • @louisteoh as per my experiment, it won’t disturb anything but make sure you are not adding a welcome tab but a page tab. (refer image 4: http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/4.png )

    REMEMBER TO CHANGE THE THIS TAB’S NAME FROM WELCOME (OR WHATEVER IT IS BY DEFAULT) TO SOMETHING LIKE VIDEO etc.TO DO THIS GO TO YOUR APP AREA, CLICK ON EDIT SETTING AND RENAME IT. (REFER IMAGE 5 : http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/5.jpg)

    Once you are done with installing this page tab, go to this app and paste that code. Method is same -> go to app, select html and paste the code in that box and save it.To your 2nd question, yes it will add new tab but won’t replace or disturb your existing content of welcome page i.e. form and video. So i do think you should migrate it to newer tab. Yes, you have another opportunity to add something image or another video to this tab and i suggest to do this.For example you can embed your some of business videos or you can upload a banner image or anything like that this is because it is better to have something rather than having a blank page. When a visitor or fan clicks on this new tab just due to her/his curiosity, s/he shall found some interesting stuff rather than a blank page.
    Hope this helps!

  • @moinshaikh, if the new iframe tab is created then the tracking will apply ONLY to this tab, am i right? If so, then this’s not what i want as i want to track my original Welcome page and NOT the new tab unless like you suggested i migrate the content of my Welcome page to the new tab and this’ll pose another issue which is how do i do it so that the video & opt-in form will still work after the migration? Can i not go thru all this hustle and just do something about my current welcome tab?

     @adegbengaagoro, i’m trying out your  wordpress method but i’m not able to locate the source code icon from wordpress where i created my 2 fan pages. Can you please,if possible, show me a screenshot of how it looks like exactly ? Thanks.

  • @louisteoh no, google will track your original welcome page and not this new tab. Only thing for this you need to do is when you enter page link in ga.webdigi.co.uk make sure you enter page address of your welcome page i.e. something like:

    http://www.facebook.com/Intesols?sk=app_4949752878

    To get welcome page’s link just click on your facebook’s welcome tab and copy the address from the address bar and paste it into http://www.facebook.com/Intesols?sk=app_4949752878 and you’re ready to go to track welcome page and not that newly created tab

  • @moinshaikh, if that’s the case then there’s no need for me to migrate my video and opt-in form from my Welcome page to the new tab as it would seem to me that the new tab is just for me to put in the analytics code,am i right? If so, is it ok then for me to delete the new tab or i can’t since it has the analytics code in it? Sorry if this question sounds silly to you.

  • @louisteoh no do not delete is as it contains that code, if you don’t wish to put any content on this tab it is okay but don’t delete it.I hope you are now very close to the goal.

  • @louisteoh

    Your pages are not using  fbml but you are using an old out dated fbml app (but it works). WordPress uses PHP and the resulting page is output using HTML.  @adegbengaagoro is correct FBML is no longer supported on Facebook

    This is your homepage:
    http://thisislouisteoh.com/
    These are the two pages that are being pulled into Facebook:
    http://thisislouisteoh.com/myfbpages/?page_id=31
    http://thisislouisteoh.com/myfbpages/?page_id=5

    This is the analytics code from your home page:

      var _gaq = _gaq || [];
      _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-26741491-1']);
      _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);

      (function() {
        var ga = document.createElement(‘script’); ga.type = ‘text/javascript’; ga.async = true;
        ga.src = (‘https:’ == document.location.protocol ? ‘https://ssl‘ : ‘http://www‘) + ‘.google-analytics.com/ga.js’;
        var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
      })();

    The code isn’t in either of your one of your fanpages. you need to install the “All In One SEO” plugin that I told you about and put this into it ( UA-26741491-1 ) then your tracking will work.

    There is no need to create a separate analytics account for each of your pages Google will track every page that you add to your WordPress install just go to your analytics account click on Content > Content Drill down then then click on the page you want to explore

    If your still having problems understanding how to set it up let me know. I’m willing to do it for you. It shouldn’t take me more than 15 min max.

    Scott

  • @moinshaikh, that’s what i thought. Thanks for the confirmation.

    Question: Under the “What are you tracking?” section in the GA “Tracking code” tab, I’m given 3 options i.e. i) Single domain, ii)  One domain with multiple subdomains & iii)  Multiple top-level domains. Which option do i select? The SME article you send me in your earlier post said to select option (iii) whilst one of the references i’ve said to select option (i). I’m confused who’s saying the correct thing. Oh boy!

  • @louisteoh while i was doing a testing for you yesterday, i chose  Add a Profile for an existing domain and checked this morning just an hour ago and found it is working nice for me and tracking my welcome page data: refer image:
    http://fb.intesols.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/6.jpg

    let me know when you are finished with the job, i waited for 24 hours for tracking code work and it started working in 24 hrs so you too need to wait for sometime

  • “LIKES” FROM PAKISTAN?

    I’m working on a Facebook campaign in Vermont. The analytics show me that 260 of the “likes” on the page are from Pakistan. The campaign is about requiring the labeling of food with ingredients that are genetically modified. It’s a local issue here in Vermont and has an international resonance as well. However, why would I be getting that many likes from Pakistan?
