How to SEO pictures on Facebook? (23 posts)

Topic tags: photos, SEO, tagging
  • I was told that you can somehow tag photos on Facebook (e.g.  metatags? ) and tie them back to your website to create an SEO boost.  Can someone help me out with this?

    Thanks!

  • Go into your photos tab on the left hand side of your Wall.  Click on the appropriate photo – click add a description – enter keywords and URL there

  • @dcoville001

Sorry, Diane, I’m blonde, visual learner and about to turn 60, could you help me out with your instructions above?

    I went to photos tab.
    I found appropriate photo.
I clicked on said photo…..tried a left, then right click.
Did not get a dialogue window to open for the opportunity to add a description, etc.

    One more time?

  • Hmmm – when I click on the individual photo it enlarges the photo and a sidebar on the right comes up with the “Add a description” with a box below where you can enter the keywords/phrases and URL – and below that it comes up with Tagging button below that and then a Comments box below that.

But don’t right click – just click into the indiividual picture and the picture should enlarge and show you the box beside it.

  • @barbc

    • Click on the photo you want to add a link to.  This opens the photo.
    • Look to the left (just above the comments section), click the link there that says ADD A DESCRIPTION or click the link to EDIT your description.
    • Paste your URL to your website in the description area.
    • Click DONE EDITING to save your changes.
In addition, I would have a written description that lets them know where that link will take them.  You’ll get more clicks on it that way.

  • You must have a different version of FB.  This is how it works on my wall:

    1. click on a photo
    2. a ‘tag photo’ window opens.
    3. type in your url.
    Waa-la!

  • Mine works like @barbc

  • Whew, Mike, feeling vindicated and not a bit old for not being able to follow the other way! hahahha

    @richardmclaughlin

  • Thanks for the great tip for tagging FB photos. Appreciate it!

  • I’m off to try this. But I’m not blonde. I’ve got brown hair and am 33. If it doesn’t work can I use two small children and not much sleep as a get out clause? ;) Wish me luck !!!

    @TheLizWeston :)

  • Hello all, I find this very interesting, because I thought everything we post in our profiles is private and so seo would not be counted. This would be good for companies in their photo sections though.
    Thoughts?

  • It worked for me !! I’ll be doing that from now on. Repetitive, but useful. Cheers.

From @TheLizWeston with the brown hair…

  • Does simply putting your link on the description improve your sites SEO because it increases the sheer number of backlinks on the web? Do backlinks within FB count as multitple pages? Bc if so I’m going to be very excited!!!!

  • @barbc ~ I just did the tag thing with one of mine, but it did NOT result in a clickable link.  When you put the link in the description area (like I described above), it gives you a clickable link which will take people to your website (or where ever you are trying to take them..

The only thing that may be different is if you already have a description, you’ll have to click EDIT rather than ADD DESCRIPTION.

If you only want the web address listed but not clickable, then do the tag thing.  If you want them to click it and go to your website, do it in the description.

  • Thanks to everyone for their great insight.

My big question, though, is how this improves SEO of the linked site.  Does Google identify this as a link?  Also, is there any benefit in adding keywords to the descriptions, as well?

  • I’ve found some articles that suggest that anything you post in your stream on a fan page can be found by Google, so if you post a picture and include your link in the description it will help your SEO. (This is one of the articles: http://www.insidefacebook.com/2009/07/13/seo-facebook-pages-10-key-strategies/) Regardless, if your link directs traffic to your website then it’s worth it to put it on your pictures.

  • Although I read that because Google indexes activity in Social Media accounts, it is important to add keywords and URLès in the descriptions of the photos.  I decided to test it as I had several photos up but hadn’t optimized them.  I did a couple and then went into Google and searched those keywords and my URL – it found both of the images.within a few hours.

  • @sndinc  Google does index Facebook both profiles and pages. – You choose the privacy features you want to turn on for each of them. The difference is that you can’t make a page private, but you can make a profile public.

  • Amy, very good point. I truly believe that most set their personal profiles to somewhat private. At least that has been my experience.

  • Thank you everyone!  This was a great tip.  I linked individual images to individual website pages.  Not by Tags, but by Description.

  • Great tips…  it only takes a minute!

  • Great! Didn’t know that…I’ll spending hours going through photo on my business facebook pages know and tagging them – not sure whether to be happy or sad at the hours coming up… lol

  • Woww : )
