How to migrate fans from a page to a place, anyone know how? (8 posts)

  • I’m working with a non-profit that initially started a business page, acquired over 300 fans, for some reason (no one seems to know) felt like they should start over with a place page, which now has over 100 fans.  The problem is that the name for both is nearly the same, but not exact so a merge isn’t possible.  What is the best way to migrate fans from one page to the other so that one of the accounts can be deleted?  Anyone know?  Thanks in advance for your help.

  • A number of things can be done;

    1) Tell fans of the page to go over and like the place

    2) You shouldn’t have actually gone to create a place page, because a page can be turned to a place; all you need to do is to add a physical address location to your page and Facebook will automatically convert the page to a place page.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Dan,

    Right – They already asked the fans to go to the new page.  However, based on a comparison of fan names – there is very few that actually did that.  Only about 20 of the 300 have become fans of the new page.  Thus, 80 are new fans (since February)

    I am trying to untangle someone else’s actions, while retaining as many of the the fans as possible.  Is there some more direct way – other than a post, to move fans from one page to the other?

  • @janecook It sounds like you should be able to merge the place and page into one if you change one of the names. If you have the same address information, website, phone, etc. you should be able to merge after ensuring both pages are “claimed” by you. I had to go through the process of “claiming” with my appropriate email for both pages and then, once claimed, I was able to merge. It took a day for the claim approval before I could attempt the merge. Have you claimed both the place and the page as the business prior to attempting a merge?

  • Changed the addresses to match.  Will wait a couple of hours to see if the page with the most fans will allow me to merge the other.  Alexandra – how do you request a claim if both pages are functional and have fans?

  • If they actually started the Place Page, @janecook then it should be claimed by you already.  If is unclaimed, when you navigate to the Page, you will see a “Is this your Place?” on the lower left side bar.  It may take even longer to have them merge but hopefully it will work!

  • Right,  both page and place have been claimed and are live.  I went to both page and place, and made sure all the basic information is exactly the same (address, email, phone numbers, business category).  That was about 24-hours ago .  Went to the page that has more likes, went to resources tab, still do not see a merge option in the list.  According to FB Help, this should allow me to make a merge, however that option is not present.

    Question, since I am an admin on both page and place, should that option show up for me – or is it only available to whoever initially claimed the place and started the page?  Should that make a difference?

  • I think I have it figured out.  I went to both page and place, removed the address portion, which prompted a message to me that there was a page with a similar name and asked for confirmation that I am qualified to claim.  We will see what happens next.  I have a hunch that it will trigger the ability to merge.
