how to engage readers in discussion? (10 posts)

  • I don’t know a proper title lol. Let’s say that I made an interesting post or ask a question (thought provoking, trying to see if anyone would participate and give answers), but everyone saw my post (more than 40 people have seen it) but few likes and no comments.

I felt like pulling my hair out. I am looking at other fanpages and I see their readers do lot of shares, posts and likes. I am looking at my page with one or two likes and lot of “people saw this post”. I am not seeing what I am doing wrong. It seems like I am right track but why are the readers not commenting or be engaged when I posed a question or posts with a question such as “What do you think?” or “I would love to hear your thoughts” and something not so generic.

Do you think If I show my face instead of just a brand, will people respond better because they will think I am somebody real and not just some brand?

I am thinking of making a post about the natural benefit of chai and attach it with a instructional video of how to make chai! Will people probably like that I am making myself public with my face on my facebook page?

Thanks in advance for suggestion and tips.

  • @manan-patel Hi Manan, I’m in the same situation: I can’t engage properly my audience.

I wanted to ask this question, but you anticipated me :)
If someone could answer Manan’s questions it would be great!

  • anyone?

  • Sorry for the delay in getting back to this @manan-patel @maurodand – I think a personal touch can be critical in people’s response.  People want to get to know you so they can feel like they are talking to a person rather than a logo.  Many brand pages sign their names after posts so people know who is doing the posting.  I think a personal video would be a great idea!  Funny posts also get a lot of shares and comments – it helps to make them on topic with your subject.  I just took a look at your page and your recent posts got a lot of comments – with the pill and the pizza (the pill one was funny :)  And looked through a few more of your posts – you are doing quite well with the Likes on each post so I think you are doing a good job!

I also think sometimes there is a critical mass that needs to happen to get more engagement.  It helps to have a critical mass of fans who are active to keep the conversation flowing.

thank you for the response! :) I am thinking I will make it bit more personal with my face attach to it. I have studied few other blogs especially 100daysofrealfoods, foodbabe and bill demoss. Each of them have a personal picture and some videos and blogs. They are able to have more readers.

to be at their level, i will have to make myself more personal. it does make sense that to have more engagement there need to be a critical mass of fans which i would love to achieve someday.

I guess I can keep doing whatever I’m doing and hopefully my blog will gain attention after sometime! it sure does take lot of work but it’s hard when no other pages are willing to help promote your page on their behalf.

    Hi,

I am a CPA trying to make accounting & tax funny & lighthearted; hopefully to get more followers & eventually leads. I was looking at some different cartoons to possibly post & yes I did contact the owners for copyright purposes. Have you or anyone for that means found cartoons to draw likes and/or comments. Stale reminders of due dates etc isn’t going to get me anywhere. Thanks!!

  • @DavidCJones – The absolute best response I’ve had to any post on my page was the posting of a Far Side cartoon showing the Founding Fathers wondering if the opening line should be “Us the People or We the People…” . Lots of Likes, quite a few shares, but no comments. When I do post something like that, or motivational quotes or whatever, I try to keep it related in some way to editing, writing, language or finding success in some way.

After attending the International Freelancers Day conference last week, I started using the “call to action” idea – actually asking them to Like or Comment, but no one has taken me up on that yet. I’m not sure what to do at this point either.

    Thanks for posting!

  • @manan-patel I just took a look at your blog.

One of the first things that sticks out is that you have a default image for a lot of your posts – there’s nothing eye catching with your posts – it all looks the same.

Also your titles need to be attention grabbing… “Understanding Ergonomics” is not attention grabbing – no-one wants to understand ergonomics, they want to know how to avoid the pain of sitting at a computer all day long. I’d say something like “Why your computer is killing you, and what to do about it” – now it’s something people care about.

Target people’s emotions, and look for common complaints by people in forums – check out quora, health forums etc and see what people want to know about.

Also check your analytics – how many people visit each article in the first place compared to how many comments you get on the article.

    I hope that helps!

  • Thank you! :) @louissayers

I am in process of re-designing my blog website. I agree about the default image for every blog post. I just don’t want to deal with copyright issues and there isn’t much pictures worthy in the free stock pics on flickr and google

but i’m trying to change things around and use my own pictures.

  • @manan-patel No worries, good luck with your pictures :)
