How much time? (10 posts)

  • How much time do you allow yourself on facebook daily/weekly? Do you have a scheduled time to be on fb? Is there a way to get it done quickly and not be sucked into the vortex of cyberspace?

  • haha… That’s a very good question @deairby I literally set aside time to check updates and respond. First thing in the morning, once during lunch and then once before I leave the office. Sometimes I sign on later at night too just to gain access to a different audience (time zones).

I think if you find that it’s taking a good portion of your time, a nice way to manage it is to set those particular times and say you are not staying on for longer than 5-10 minutes, unless there is a flurry of activity that you must get involved in.

It is important to respond to everyone who posts, so make sure you have messages set up so you get alerted when someone posts something. And, use the rest of the time to start your own post. :)

  • Thanks, @joancrocker for the comments. I think I need to use a timer by my computer. It is way too easy to be on here ALL DAY.

  • I agree!  Although I’m technically supposed to be on Facebook as my job, it’s easy to get sucked into other things (I say as I just finished watching a video of dogs saying grace before eating – LOL).  A timer works well for me when I use it.

  • I monitor about 20 Facebook pages for my job, so it is always open on one of my two computer screens.  It is very easy to become distracted by it, so I try to check it about once an hour, just to make sure I am staying on top of things.

I highly suggest treating it like email and scheduling specific times during the day to check Facebook.  Facebook can be a huge source of information, but it can also make your day disappear! :)

  • @lisaschulteis @andrea-vahl sounds like survival is possible! Dogs saying grace? Missed that one some how.

  • @deairby Social Media in general can make anyone’s day disappear, not just FB. The question becomes how Effective can you be within a 24hr. timeframe.  For me, I’m working to be more structured within specific timeframes, otherwise I’ll get off course, but then again we are not robots. In general I guess I’ll just have to learn to sleep faster to get things done, and watch the occasional video of dogs…to lighten the day.

  • @blairevanball yep…no dogs allowed, sleep fast! Effectiveness is the key, well, the key question! Where do I spend my time to be most effective?

  • I have a friend with a biz page who does not particularly like Facebook or even maintain a personal profile. I almost envy her – she does a very good, disciplined job of going in, posting updates and getting out fast. She actually lives the method we all recommend. Me? I find it way.too.tempting to click on the little red notification icon. Sigh!

  • @abigailgorton I feel your pain, Abigail. However, since SME launched these clubs I have to admit I’ve barely been able to stay current with my blog and answer email. aaaaaaarggggggggggghhhhh
