How much is to much (8 posts)

  • How often do you think you should send out notifications to your followers a day/week ect.  How many times a day do you think you could do it before your fans will begin to get annoyed?

  • The general rule of thumb for Facebook is once or twice daily. As for Twitter, as long as it’s relevant content sharing or tweets, then I don’t think there is a limit. And for Blogs: it depends on your goals and objectives. Some blogs like Mashable release lots of articles per day, other blogs it’s once per day and others its once every few days. But with blogs, the more valuable content you publish, the faster you will grow your following and be successful!

  • @matthewoneill  I agree with @melissaagnes about choosing a frequency that relates to your different channels, i.e Facebook, Twitter, Blog. Having said that, you may want to read this recent study stating that posting on Facebook more than once every 3-hours is actually counter productive.

    Cheers,

  • @matthewoneill I agree with both @melissaagnes and  @fredericgonzalo about choosing frequency of posting based on the different channels. I also believe you need to think about what message you are communicating with the post and what reaction you hope to receive from followers. Are you wanting to drive them to a specific webpage? To another article? To forward the post to friends?

When you have answered those questions you will want to think about the most appropriate timing for your posts and messaging specifics.

  • @matthewoneill I Agree as well, although a couple of points:

The study @fredericgonzalo talks about is good but you shouldn’t be posting every 3 hours on Facebook unless you are a news site. 1-3 time over a 24 hour period is good. But make it good, conversational and/or relevant.

As for Twitter – go nuts! :)

With blogging it all comes down to what you want to achieve and your goals. Once a day is good for content building (but make it good and short), otherwise 1-3 times per week is good.

General rule for blogging: the longer and more detailed your posts, the less you need to publish them. It’s a balancing act and one your blog will find eventually.

I agree with @alexandrabriggs – definitely have a goal in mind when generating content.

  • I agree with   @melissaagnes   anymore than 2 posts a day on facebook is counterproductive unless you are a well known author or celebrity. Tweets you can have more as long as you are not constantly promoting something . What I have read is one promotional for every 10 t0 12 informative tweets. Blogs most people only write twice a week

  • Good suggestions @melissaagnes the thing about Mashable and the frequency of their publications is that they touch on a variety of topics.Publications about a single topic/business/offer would affect the frequency.

Great points from @alexandrabriggs as well. What is the call to action? Join, vote, subscribe, enter contest…if there is a limited time offer your messaging and frequency should correlate with the duration of the offer.

In addition to the message you plan on delivering and the results you expect, consider this – who is your audience? where are you most likely to reach them? when are they most likely to be paying attention? Each outlet (Twitter, FB, etc.) is used and information processed differently. Having this knowledge will help in your planning.

  • A few points:

There is an older post in the Facebook Club called Do You Post Equally on All Social Media Pages? You should check it out, as it migh prove useful.

As I was saying there, you have to consider the nature of the network, the kind of post you are generating and what your goal is. One study says it is OK to post on Facebook 2 to 5 times a day. Another says no more then once every 3 hours. There is also a study telling brands to post every other day. A Hub Spot study shows you can post every hour. 50% of your likes will come in the first hour, in 4 hours you will get up to 70% and in 22 hours you will have reached 95%.

So how much is too much? I’d say there is no common number for everyone. My advice is to put yourself in the mindset of your fan. Are you adding value or spamming his wall? If you are just blasting them with promotions… well, once is too much. But if you are building relationships and nurturing communication then how could you post only once every other day? Make it your goal to build a relationship with them, see how your fans react to your post, what they appreciate most, at what time of the day they get more engaged and you will find your answer..
