How much is a ”Like” worth? (25 posts)

Topic tags: engagement, likes, opinion
  • Saw this article this morning about what affect a “like” has on stock prices. Thought I would share with my fellow campers: http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2012/10/23/163434283/how-much-is-a-like-on-facebook-worth-for-a-companys-share-price

What do you think? I believe marketers are acknowledging there is not much sense in tracking the “vanity metrics” of likes but do you believe differently? How do you believe likes have impacted your page?

  • That is a really interesting article @alexandrabriggs- but I’m finding the skeptic in me saying that it can’t be right.  I don’t know his methods but it seems like correlation wouldn’t mean causation.  But it’s strange that they did track closely.

I think there are a lot of people wondering the same thing – I know I’ve seen people say things like:  “well they have 10,000 Likes on Facebook” or they have “50,000 followers on Twitter” as proof that they know what they are doing.  Not always the case :)

  • I don’t believe a “like” has any inherent value unless you engage it in some meaningful way.

  • The “” Like “” to me seems to stroke the ego. I believe that you need at least 30 Likes before you can access the graphs and details for a Fan Page.

Those who are obsessed with getting thousands of likes to me are just spinning their wheels unless they are being converted into bottom line sales or helping you recruit in some way or another.

  • we arent a on the stock exchange…lol…..but our stores  facebook  community   is  sure  a part  of our actual value….they  would look  good to any  buyer if we were for sale….

I  WANT A LOT OF LIKES….of  the right kind….. thats why i dont do  contests or  freebies or  trades  or even   asking  for likes….. well  until now  with this  crazy new reality on facebook;…

..but one like  can  be  fabulous…… i just had a  customer  from  about  6 hours away  come to  us  and  buy  over  20 pcs of furniture…. she   saw us on facebook!!!  and  talked to me on there  several times  before  coming   to us in person….i dont know  what path   happened….but   it was thru facebook……..  i just  dont know what to do  now..that the  reach  on   my  most  attractive  feature, pictures, has been downgraded   by facebook……

@alexandrabriggs  i hear about my facebook   from   people in OUR  store  every single day….so to me   MORE IS  BETTER…..

  • Share your pics to other places Ann at Greenoak. Use IFTTT to set up a situation where your pics are posted from Instagram into Facebook and Pinterest. Spread the love around a little. Also, Twitter is a great way to share pics and drive traffic to Facebook pages and with a little automation, through IFTTT you can do it all with the same posts you have been making already.

  • @themarkrmorris2     good points……..but  im not there on instagram  yet, but it  is back on my list……and  beinG Ooutside the  tekk bubble  i have no idea  what  IFTTT  is  but i  can  google…lol…..  …..   i sure do a lot on pinterest……….have  about  2000 followers…my customers  talk about it  a LOT….and sometime  bring  pictures  from my  boards in….

..   the  great thing about facebook is its  mostly  actual people   who  have  been to our store…. ….and  dang….most probably  never  bother to like   even tho  they  probably  saw and  absorbed   our  posts….. the silent ones are who i  will really miss….

im  planning  on using the promoted posts  now.using   the  best posts …..on a budget of  maybe 10 to 20 $$ a week…..and instagram, if i  can  manage  it….

  • With your promoted posts, we are finding it best to wait for posts that attract attention. Once a post has a few likes, or shares, it is well worth the $5. Those that don’t attract attention before promotion, almost never do much better when promoted. You might offer a weekly discount or prize for those that share posts, or like things. Offer special discounts for Facebook fans and give a dollars off coupons in store for people who become fans through mobile. We had one client that set up a tablet for checkins and new fans.

  • @annfurnivall

I dont’ quite agree with this, hope you don’t mind :)

“I  WANT A LOT OF LIKES….of  the right kind….. thats why i dont do  contests or  freebies or  trades  or even   asking  for likes….. well  until now  with this  crazy new reality on facebook;…”

If you do very targetted promos, you can get very targetted fans.

  • @albertmora i think  we do have  very targeted fans….thats always my  goal……..we are in a  strong niche….  and most of our fans, i assume, are  interested in what we are interested in….

i really dont  believe in   contests …and have tried ads  with little   result…. i think  most of our   growth has  come  from   our natural networking and   word of mouth  from  our  customers…… we have   3700  fans….  i used to reach  1000  regularly!!!!   dang  , not now unless  its just  text…

do you have a good  plot  for dealing  with  the new  reality  on  facebook?

  • @annfurnivall

I’m not saying you do not have targeted fans, sure you have them!. I’m just saying that with promos you can also get targeted fans, I’ll give you two examples:

    - Let’s say you reward those who “like” your facebook page with a white paper called, for example “The complete guide to choose the perfect antique” or something similar

    - Or for example, let’s say you organize the following photo contest “The most original antique in town, send your photo to participate, the winner will have a complete rehab package for free”

I’m sure you would also get taregeted fans with these two examples.

  • @albertmora good idea  , especially if i were running  ads  or trying to  get  new  fans who havent   heard about us already…….

..my  way is   different….  usually our  fans   are  referred  by  friends  or   have already seen the store and   naturally   want to sign up  on our page…so far anyway i have  been against   contests or  even  asking ofor likes… and the few times i have tried them  they  have   not  been interesting to my  kind of  buyers….

did  you see my  question? .

  • @annfurnivall

    I don’t have a good plot…yet. Read this thread, it’s quite informative

  • already went there but thanks…….. i  guess we  are supposed to  forget how   high we used to be and  start down here where we are now..actually  i have had several  text posts  go over  30%  [1000] this week…  but  that  wont  be  near as  good for our store   as  my  picture  posts   that used to get that high….

  • @Ann at greenoak … just wondering if you use Pinterest?  Since text seems to be the way to go with Facebook THIS week, try this tip I learned from Social Identities.

    1.  Put only text in your status update – post it.
    2.  Add a link to your source (photo source in Pinterest) to the COMMENTS section right under your text post.

I just tested it on my Page and the thumbnail shows up in the link below – of course, they also have to click on it to be taken to Pinterest, but once there, they can view all the photos you’ve posted.

  •  Companies like LIKES.

I just need to ask a question. How can I start a discussion as I am unable to find the right way of doing it. Hope I can find my way round

  • @melowout thanks  for making  putting  the link in the comments  more understandable…..could i  put   a link  to   a facebbook picture post there?

im on pinterest  and like it a lot….but  its national   so not as  valuable as my   faceboook   fans  who are almost all within  driving  distance and have probably  been actual customers in the store…. i dont sell on line…i have about  2000  pinterest followers and  3700  facebook   fans…..

my  evolving  plan is  to still put lots of picturres on and  sprinkle   lots of  text  posts  on  too…and   do a promoted post  every week….  with probably an album   of the weeks new inventory….

  • A like is only worth as much as they buy from you. A like needs to be fostered and engaged into becoming a customer. Turning a like into a customer is grooming process. Build trust, community, authority, and intimacy; and that can lead to a valuable, long lasting relationship.

  • @Ann at Greenoak   Yes, you can post a link to a photo uploaded to your profile.  If you grab the link from the photo  it is not very pretty…. looks better if you take the link from the address bar instead – it is a little shorter.

Check the status update I just tried it on and you’ll see what I mean:  Whispers In Motion

  • Off topic —

Hello @ilknur  — just scroll up to the top of the section of whichever club you are viewing — there is a “new topic” button when you are not in a specific thread.

  • Extremely interesting post, Alexandra Briggs.  I agree with you that marketers don’t care as much about the numbers but the engagement.  It’s been said you’re judged ‘sexy’ or not on Facebook by how many replies and shares you have. ha

On the other hand, regular business folks who hire me still say “WOW” at the high numbers compared to their # of likes I have for our smaller community.

  • The value of Like is dependent on you, how you got the Like and what kind of content you use to keep people engaging with your brand.  Like does not equal to subscriber or viewer.

  • I am struggling how to get more likes. How do I start it?

  • @themarkrmorris2 I really like your comment about waiting to see if posts get traction BEFORE promoting them. That’s something I hadn’t tried as I just always assumed the likes and comments would come with promoting the post. Thank you for sharing, I will implement this now!

  • hi guys i am new here, cos your Facebook discussion seem interesting, please do carry the newbee along. thank you so much fellows.
