How long did it take you to ”clean up” the new Timeline? (18 posts)

  • OK, so I have to admit that I still haven’t adopted the new Timeline.  And the main reason why is that it’s my understanding that I’d probably feel the need to “tidy it up”.  You know, hide some stuff, rearrange other stuff etc.  And I’ve just been too busy to set aside time on Facebook to do this.

So, if you’ve already adopted Timeline, how long did you spend making your profile presentable again?

Was it a 5 minute deal, or a 2 hour deal? or more?

    Was it super easy?

  • I haven’t cleaned everything, but I adopted the new headline and did some changes.

It’s quite easy and it took me less than 20 minutes.

  • @cindy-king I signed up during that early preview for developers and it took around 15 minutes of playing with it, featuring posts using the star, and removing a few that I didn’t want prominently displayed.  I didn’t have much on my profile that wasn’t already public, so I didn’t have any issues with something I meant to be private turning public.

  • I had it when they first rolled it out as developer and removed it after a few weeks. I didn’t like it, it was harder to get around to what I liked doing. I just don’t like it as much as the old wall.

I do see it is back up so I guess I have no choice now.

One thing I noticed is that the timeline image, the big one across the page, like a header, collapses and you have to click on it to expand. Not sure how it is across browsers but I am pretty sure it isn’t a browser issue since then you would not be able to click and expand and click and hide again. That is another feature I don’t like.

  • I took it on early also, but really don’t like the new interface as much. It takes some fiddling to figure out the new settings. Luckily I don’t have TONS of photos to go back and change privacy settings for, but I’m still tweaking and trying to get used to it.  Yergh.

And since most people only interact with you on their news feed or ticker, I don’t go to my profile as much anyway.

I suppose when we’ve really gotten comfortable with this, Zuckerberg will find a way to yank the rug out from under us again (sigh).

  • this timeline makes me crazy !! facebook is now forcing me to study the timeline thingy

  • I’ve been fairly careful to keep Facebook clean as time has passed, so I’ve had only modest cleaning to do.  But, if you want a quick catchall option to avoid any disasters with the timeline once you switch over, if you click on the drop down menu next to the Home button in the upper right hand corner, and select the Privacy option from the menu, you can access a way to make everything in your timeline a non-public piece of content.

Where is says ’Limit the Audience for Past Posts’ there will be a link to ’Manage Past Post Visibility’.  Click and you’ll be prompted to make the sweeping change.  It does highlight the fact that if you do this change, any posts you would like to be publicly available will have to be gone to manually and changed, but if you’re looking to keep things private or just among friends, this can be a useful option.

Sorry if this was something Facebook prompted via the rollout, I was also an early adopter via the developing option, so this change has come to me differently.

  • Thanks everyone for sharing!

@ryansegovich I really appreciate the tip!  I’m going to think about that, but may well use it.

I’m SUPER, SUPER protective of my personal life and don’t share anything personal about myself online. But I do have other family members who do share and tag me on Facebook and don’t want those to show up in my Timeline.

And the last time I cleaned up my Facebook stuff after one of their last “upgrades” it took me a while.  And I know I’ll want to go through everything with a fine tooth comb this time.

  • @cindy-kin, you may want to add the function where you have to approve all tagging of yourself. Regardless of how you set your own privacy settings, a tag changes everything. If you are tagged, all of the friends of the person who tagged you can also see that post/photo. Something to think about.

You may especially want to stop tagging in posts/photos that have the public setting…

  • It was pretty fast, I didn’t have so much stuff on mine that there was any real clean up needed.  I added in a few key essentials, wedding date, the dog’s adoption day, and that was pretty much it.  Though to be fair I’m not sure how many people will every look at my timeline… #DarnItAll

  • To anyone who may know:

At the risk of sounding naive, can you switch fan pages to the new timeline or is this just something for personal pages? Either way, how do you opt for the switch?

  • New Timeline is not yet available for Pages but I’m sure it will be soon.

  • Thanks Ryan Segovich - Last I heard Timeline was going to be forced on us … tomorrow!
The only reason I didn’t make the developer plunge is I don’t have good photos.  I’m not worried about privacy – just looking amateurish.
I guess we’ll have to get this done soon enough.  :)

  • @lesliecoty That’s what I thought, but thanks for confirming!

  • Mari Smith has a great webinar on Timeline that answers tons of the questions that she did back in Sept. It is a 90 minute seminar but extremely helpful. She spent a lot of time ironing out all the ‘kinks’.  I LOVE the new custom background!  What a great ‘piece of real estate’ for branding!

  • @cindy-king
While fb timeline is being seen as an innovative and creative way to present your life story, on the other hand, i have notice some down lines too, like as you said it is a messed up thing so asks for time to get it cleaned. seek time for cleaning up stuff depends on joining duration and activity amount on fb, if you have bigg and old stuff it will surely take time so better to do this when you’re available with time. For me it took almost more than half hour to clean it for my one friend

  • I was able to add births of children, college and high school graduation and marriage in under 10 minutes with images and descriptions. I also added a few key professional moments like hosting our conference with me on stage with HootSuite and Facebook higher ups which I think is a great way to market without being salesy.
Seems to be a good set up I have passed the 2,500 subscriber mark quickly and I would say my Timeline being complete has certainly helped that effort.

  • I didn’t clean it up at all. I’ve been on since ’05 (yikes) — so does’t starting out with pictures of partying and playing beer pong and ending with conference pictures and whatnot show growth? I hope so…
