How an ideal contest app should be? (8 posts)

Topic tags: contest app
  • On HiSocial we’re working right now on a new contest app to complement our platform, I would like to ask you which functions should a perfect contest app have.
    I truly appreciate your suggestions.

  • Hi @albertmora,

I am going to start off by saying I know nothing about HiSocial so I am not going to be much help from that aspect. In my opinion… there is no perfect app. As long as you remain creative and appealing to the customers you are trying to target you should be successful. Anything that has to do with social media should never be bound by the constraints of “standards” set by other companies. That is like saying every social media strategy is the same…. so get creative and have fun with any contest you decide to throw out there.

    Hope this helps!

  • @albertmora Hi Albert

I prefer ShortStack for running all competitions but I can say that the ability to share your competition is a must! Make it as easy as possible and you can even weave it into the contest itself – giving a person more chance of winning if they share it.

I did this recently with an Olympics competition and it worked like a charm.

I would also suggest reading my blog post on running contests on Facebook as well, as you really need to think about pre- and post-contest strategy.

I hope that helps. Please get in contact with me if you have any questions. :)

  • Some ideas that I like, @albertmora are having a good looking Fangate page that someone could use out of the box so they don’t have to design their own.  I think Fan-gating is a must, extra entries for sharing is cool, a customizable entry form.  Also tutorials along the way for people who don’t understand how to add the app to their Page.  And good analytics.  Hope that helps!

  • @andrea-vahl @albertmora Make it simple for admins to create the contest and for users to enter it. Prepare wireframes and show them to your mum. If she understands, you are ready for programming :)

And don’t reward users for sharing (on Facebook), you can’t do that. You can reward them for bringing users (accepted invites).

  • @russellallert

Of course we’ll make as shareable as possible, both in Facebook and Twitter

I’m not sure if “giving a person more chance of winning if they share it.” is againsts Facebook TOS, I’ll study that

    @andrea-vahl Sure it helps Thx

@milan-steskalI agree , usability is one of our main concerns

  • @albertmora & @milan-steskal  It is against Facebook’s Promotional Guidelines to use Facebook’s functions (Like, Share, Comment), but NOT using an app’s functions.

As long as you use an app and the functions within that, you are okay (assuming they don’t violate any guidelines or terms). So, just for the record, my example above is valid and within the guidelines.

As for making a competition as shareable as possible, it is not always obvious to everyone. I have seen many competitions without share buttons integrated into them.

  • @russellallert You can’t ger rewarded for using Facebook social channels, but I believe that you can get rewarded for bringing users to the app.
