Holy Cow! Look what you can see if you click LIKES on the timeline (23 posts)

  • Seriously ~ don’t click like on my page (http://www.facebook.com/Lilac.Golf).  I’m doing very targeted marketing to local golfers, but look at the page and click LIKES in the app section.  I don’t know that I like everyone being able to see that info . . .

    What to you think?

  • @dedimason, I didn’t see/couldn’t find the app section you were referring to, so I clicked Like to see if it was any different than what I was seeing before clicking “Like”.  (I later went back and Unliked :) )  Nothing appeared to change, and I’m not sure what “that info” is that you were seeing and commenting on to add my thoughts.  Can you elaborate or point me/us in the right direction?  :)

  • @dedimason

Have you thought of switching it with Events so that it isn’t so noticeable?

  • Ohhhh….  Now that I’ve actually followed your directions and clicked on the Like section of the apps ;) , I now see / follow what you’re saying!  I don’t blame you.  Seems to me that may be a glitch in the Facebook system.
I just checked a few more Facebook pages that have switched to the Timeline format, and that info is showing on each page’s Like section.

  • @scottmadden Good idea!  I think I will do that.

@hjelliott ~ LOL . . . yep, as far as I’m concerned that’s stuff for my business to know ~ so I hope it’s a glitch.  I first thought it was just me who could see it until I tried it on someone else’s timeline.

EDIT TO SAY:  I have done as @scottmadden suggested.  If you’re wondering what info I’m talking about, you’ll have to click the little drop down arrow in my apps area (just under the cover pic ~ to the right) and then click Likes.

  • I think it will keep people “honest”. I have been to some pages with tons of likes and see that the most popular city is Africa. Can tell who is buying likes.I Agree to hide the box in the apps section. Not many people will know where to go find it. I hope Facebook eventually allows us to remove it and other apps like Events that each page doesn’t use. Or even allow us to say what picture shows each time.

  • @socialbflysd ~ I hadn’t considered it being a way to see who is ‘buying’ likes.  You’re right, though.  Because my pages are so targeted and have to show performance this season, I never consider things like that, LOL!

  • @dedimason dang… i  dont like it at all…your page looks  great  tho..

  • @annfurnivall ~ thanks . . . I don’t like that profile pic and decisions about what posts to leave on the timeline and what to hide are driving me BATTY . . . but I’m in love with the cover photo.  Just hope it helps draw more leagues in :)

  • @dedimason ,maybe  think action  photos  of  golfers on   the  courses…i  did that  at our  garden party  last yr…lots of  fun pictures of   groups  of  people  at the store…. so fun…and  i tagged  some  and  some  tagged  themselves…. i put  them in an album…

im having problems  too…if i  take a pin  down   or  change it i  get a  big  blank  space… im not sure i will be pinning…. i love th e  big pictures tho… i think i like it  chronological  better…

  • @annfurnivall ~ I started working on building a bunch of action pics last year . . . you’re reading my mind :)

  • i did  ask  permission when i  took their  photos…. ….the album   is under  photos…gardenparty people..

…  wow,  just think how many tags  you  could  make   from a picture of  a junior   golf   class or a tournament….

  • @annfurnivall ~ I always tell people that the photos I’m taking might end up on any of our web areas.  Those who don’t want that let me know real quick . . . but most are perfectly fine with it.

  • @dedimason im  quitting  right after this….  same with our  customers….they like it….

how about   a  view  from the pro … or  general buddy pictures… golf is so  rich…my dh loves it..

.  im pretty sure plentiful   pictures have   helped our  page  A LOT…

  • @annfurnivall ~ yes . . . and I just learned how important they are when I decded to push the page and really started reaserching/learning more about how to leverage ourselves.  I jumped in to the social MARKETING arena in January but I already had a very good grasp of Facebook and how everything works, so it’s been pretty easy to get it rolling.  I have hundreds of pictures to go through and start uploading/tagging.

Speaking of pics to tag, check out Mashable’s Page ~ they would have one heck of a job tagging all of those fan profile pics!  I really like their concept, though . . . it’s giving me ideas for my future covers!

  • @dedimason it was my understanding that there was a way to view competitors insights on Facebook even before Timeline. I remember reading about it and can’t find the place I saw it.

I did come across a great marketing article on how to use Facebook Insights. It’s an older Mashable article but I think much of it still applies today.

    http://mashable.com/2010/12/27/facebook-insights-small-business/

  • @scottprock  As always, you provide great info. Thanks for the article.!

  • @scottprock ~ Thanks Scott!  I’m using all of that and have been ever since they first introduced the “New” Insights.  Was nice to confirm that I was reading my data correctly, though :)

  • I don’t think this is a glitch, @dedimason – I think it’s a new “feature”.  But if we really think about it, is it that shocking that we can see that your Likes are basically 35-44 year old (most likely men) in your local area?  Probably would have been a good guess anyway.  :)

  • No diff than us being able to see who follows who on twitter, is it?

  • @andrea-vahl ~ LOL . . . You’re right . . . I just don’t like that info out there.  I have one employee who drives me bonkers and the ‘talking about’ is naturally going to rise and fall at different times.  I can hear that being used against me bigtime . . .

  • @dedimason I must admit, it is quite unsettling to see how much analytics one can derive from this new feature on Timeline for brands.

I went online this afternoon and took a closer look at a competitor’s page, and could see what topics got engagement in the past week, past month, in a much clearer fashion than ever before.

I guess we’ll have to get used to it and it works both ways, so what people see about you, you can see about them, right?

  • @socialbflysd Oh, I’d never thought of that! Buying likes is such a waste of time if you ask me. I don’t know why anyone would do that!
