Have you been doing Facebook advertising lately? (11 posts)

  • Just wondering what people’s experiences with Facebook Ads were more recently.  I did a sponsored post that was a Facebook offer (for a free thing) and I got a few people posting that they didn’t want to see my spam.  But I think that’s due to Facebook pushing posts into the News Feed more often. I still had a very good result overall but just interesting quirks to deal with.

    Then I read an interesting article by Jason Falls on Facebook Ad saturation:  http://www.socialmediaexplorer.com/digital-marketing/facebook-saturation/  Just curious how things were going for your campaigns if you are running them.

  • ive  done a few promoted posts this  year  and have been  mostly happy   with them…i dont like having   ads in my  newsfeed..i understand  but it  does feel  like spam…..therefore i will be  more hesitant about  running   a regular ad…

  • Two things:

    1. This is hilarious! -> http://typicalbusiness.com/facebook-sponsored-story-haters-spammers/

    2. I’ve been promoting posts on fan pages for my travel agency and also for my own personal Fan Page $5, gets me roughly 100 actions (40 odd pages likes, rest post likes and link clicks) on my personal fan page. The same $5 gets me only 10-20 actions on the travel agency brand fan page.

    I think given that the posts are appearing in the feed more often, I’m getting much higher engagement on the personal fan page as it appears as if it’s an actual person over a brand.

    Very interesting.

  • @jake-hower  Thanks for the link.  I is hilarious!  I passed it along to friends.

    Steve

  • That is really funny @jake-hower – a lot of angry people over the sponsored posts.

    I think it makes a difference whether you are advertising to your fans only who know you (and hopefully like you!) rather than advertising to the friends of your fans who don’t know you and are irritated with advertising in general.  I think that these comments will deter people from using that advertising model!

  • why would  you do a  sponsered post to your  fans…???  why not a promoted post?    wouldnt that  be better?   @andrea-vahl they are different  arent they?  i usderstood  that  promoted posts  looked just like posts   …and just  got to more of  your  fans…is  that still right?

    if i  run a regular ad  , not a sponsered  ad,  where would it  be?

  • You are right @annfurnivall  but you can run a Sponsored Story post that is similar to the promoted post but you can add targeting.  So the Sponsored Story post will go into the news feeds of people who may not be your fans – but have friends who are your fans.  I think it’s much more “intrusive” than a promoted post that goes out to people who already like you :)

  • I don’t get the whole “intrusive” thing…

    When you watch TV, do you scream at it when ads come on. When you’re driving down the road, do you scream at the billboard? When you’re searching on Google, do you abuse the ads all over the page?
    Displaying ads is what keeps Facebook free for everyone. If ads irritate you too much, there is a solution:

    • Turn off the TV
    • Don’t drive down the highway
    • Don’t use a search engine (Is this even possible, how did people find information before them?)
    • and…. log out of Facebook
    OK, I’ll step off my soap box now :)

  •  oh well…i hate it and   push the spam button….why  cant they just  stay on the right hand side?   i still see them..i hear you  facebook has a right to do whatever they want…. i  can still hate it….lol

    ..i have a store page too….and have been getting  some ads there too….  do ii want  to  send my customers somewhere else…NO..i delete…..  i have assumed these  ads’  were  someone  dropping links on  my page….

    @jake-hower

  • I also saw some blog posts about companies getting negative feedback from users for ‘hijacking’ their news feed. I think its just the fact that the users are used to that being the FRIEND ZONE and not the advertising area. That is to the right in their minds.

    I typically only advertise on the right side myself :)

  • I’m working through this artical by Amy Porterfield 7 Tips to Create Facebook Ads That Convert http://goo.gl/1D9mx  where she states “I always choose both “Desktop News Feed and Mobile-Only News Feed” to get maximum exposure in the News Feed. Why do I not choose the right-hand column as well? Since making this shift to News Feed only ads, I’ve gone from about 0.1% Click Through Rate to between 4%-7%! To put it simply, ads in the News Feed get much more engagement than ads in the right-hand column on Facebook.”  - this is something i never knew – Just created my first ad with that configuration and will watch closely
