Graphic vs. Embedded Link – Tip / Poll (13 posts)

Topic tags: engagement, graphic, link
  • I am calling this a tip / poll because I get good result with this but wanted to know how it works for you..

I found that I get more activity on my posts when I upload a graphic and just include a link in my description text rather then embedding a link. The graphic seems to catch peoples eye rather then blend in like the embedded links tend to do.
    How about you?

  • Absolutely, @ken-mcclary!

  • I even see higher numbers in the “people saw this” Facebook stats. I did a test and on the embeded link it tapped out at about 4k and the same text and link with a graphic 11k.

Is this because Facebook will show your graphic to more people or is this based of the number of people who stop scrolling the page when your graphic is visible.

  • @ken-mclary I do the same thing and it seems to work for me!

  • Interesting! I personally find it annoying when people post the link in the status update with their other text - I prefer to click on the image and move on from there. But it seems I’m an exception ;-) I will give it a try and test your tip @ken-mcclary

  • @claudiapoeckl I am not sure if you get more views because people stop and look at your image or if Facebook prefers to show images over links and give a image more exposure.

Does anyone know if this is true?

  • We have started doing this on Social Media Examiner’s Page, @ken-mcclary  We do it with our own blog posts.  I take a screenshot of the blog post, post it as a picture, then add the link in the text.
I agree, @claudiapoeckl I like clicking on the embedded link but I think there are a couple advantages to this method:1.  Pictures show up larger in the News Feed.2.  If someone comments on the picture, that shows up large in their news feed for their friends to see. 3.  Facebook has a preference for pictures.

So I would recommend giving it a try and measuring the results!

  • @andrea-vahl – I just test this screenshot method on my personal profile (rather than our Fan Page). Is is supposed to look like this? It is really big on my page and blurry in the newsfeed. (I do like that if you click on it it, it’s an image.)

    Thanks, Jeanne

  • Yes @jeanneekhaml – the hard thing is the resolution sometimes.  If you can balance the width of the Timeline with the width of the image that is good – or Highlight the post so it goes across the page.  I don’t have the perfect dimensions for you.

  • @andrea-vahl – I so appreciate this one idea. I am testing it on our fan page. It’s a screenshot of a webinar “encore,” and the screenshot is much better this time, both on the page and in the timeline. (I have also pinned it to the top and promoted it.)

I’ll give feedback on Monday. I hesitate to post the fan page here (self-promotion), but would send the link to anyone who asks in a private message.

  • In the past, I’ve posted links to webpages along with a comment, and sometimes posted pics with the link in the description.

However, now that I think about the results (comments), the pics do seem to generate more activity.

Even “shared” pics seem to generate more activity than “shared” links.

I hadn’t paid enough attention to it to identify it as a trend.

    Thanks for the tip!

    @ken-mcclary

  • My results are difficult to interpret because I have use paid promotion on some of our “money” posts, but… both posting the image and putting the link in the text AND using the Andrea Screenshot message get “seen” more than simply posting the link and letting it auto-populate with the much smaller image and meta description.

Will probably continue to test both. I thank you again, @andrea-vahl for the ideas!
