Google+ Communities (19 posts)

  • Google + Communities are very similar to Facebook Groups. Has anyone started using them yet?

Do you think they have the potential to rival the effectiveness of Facebook Groups?

  • Yes, I have and have started one titled Proposal Writing and belong to 8 others. They seem easier to use than Facebook and LinkedIn, but don’t have the same features, so it is a trade off.

  • I have joined a couple of communities but not started one of my own. I do like how they work so far.

  • @ileane @ericsutherland @lorithueme I have joined few communities and have created one oof mine couple of days ago. And i feel that in some ways, it can compete to facebook groups and linkedin groups but it basically differs from facebook and offers quiet different features. It will be very interesting to know how people are going to use it and how they will be making optimum RoI out of it.If you are looking to create new community, here is a reading that shows steps involved in creating it. http://www.intesols.com.au/cgblog/46/217/Social-Media-Updates-Google-adds-community-pages.html

  • I love them!   They are like forums.  I have started two…Horsebiz Hangout is almost ready to go.  I have the topics, have invited people and started adding posts to the topics. This morning, thought it would be fun to start another.  I can see they will take work to get going and keep up….   If anyone is interested they can join that at: Social Media for Small Business

I like them better than Facebook groups.  We can also make them private or public.

  • Thanks for responding and sharing the links @randithompson @ericsutherland @lorithueme @moinshaikh

  • I like the ways you can organize the topics @ileane  Facebook doesn’t have that – the search is decent but I’d rather have things grouped into logical places.  I think these are going to definitely re-energize Google+ but I think Google+ still doesn’t have the critical mass necessary.  It will be interesting to see if this changes the playing field.

  • I started the “Channel Sales” Community on Google+ a few days ago. I like the ease of importing links to content.  I think more work needs to be done so post remain within each Communities web pages.  I have seen many Community Founders mentioning how many post have shown up outside of their community pages into the general categories.  I have set up a permission to join setting. It helps to filter out individuals that are not truly involved or interested in Channel Sales.  In general I like Facebook Fan Pages. Except for the Fan Page Applications. Such as to set up a private chat room on a Fan Page etc.. These apps need more work.  I feel Google has the lead with Fan/Community Chat activity. I like their new hangout system. It needs to be polished in regards to how user friendly it’s design is. But I feel Google is moving in the right direction.

  • @ileane @ericsutherland @lorithueme @moinshaikh @randithompson @andrea-vahl @timothy_says

I just joined some this morning.  I hope the Communities will stay on the subject because LinkedIn is so crowded with junk in their Groups.

  • I have now filled up with the communites I started with topics and posts.  If anyone wants to see the topics I created, you can check them out and add them to yours.  I see that people are starting communites and just using them like a blog instead of giving their followers topics to post under. What other topics is everyone using?

@andrea-vahl  It will be interesting to see what happens.  I see more people using Google+ all the time now.  I really like the search engine results that I get from there and add a post to each of my pages, and now communities, every day as a result.

  • @ileane I think Google+ communities have more potential than Facebook groups.  The discussions make it easier to find topics, and G+ communities are more easy too find.  I notice I am getting suggestions of communities to join based on what my friends are joining.

I began a community a few days ago:  Extend Your Reach ~ https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/111426352785960717845  @randithompsonI did provide several topics.  That is my favorite feature.  Thanks for this discussion!

  •  Look at you grow!  Robin @savingstories

I also like them and started a another very generic one for any horse people.  I see the biggest groups on Facebook are like that….   It will be interesting to see where this goes.  Over 100,000 communites so far!

  • @randithompson…. randi.or  anybody…….should i  be on  google + as person or as  greenoak…?i see  yours is under  your name, not  your  buisness…. my  business isnt  just me, its dh and my son, my name isnt  the   main thing…i would  prefer  greenoak if possible… …..i would  be  there  for my  busness  …but  just  starting to   dig into the  details…

your  page had  some  great   links…

  • @annfurnivall   That is a great question. Google+ is a lot like Facebook.  I have a profile there, two business pages and now, 3 communites.  In the communites I can post from either my profile or either business page.  I have to really watch that.  I think the widest reach is still on the profiles newsfeeds.  So many people are still trying to understand Google+ (including me)  I try to post there at least once a day on all of the pages and now communities that I have set up.  Since Google is so deeply woven into the internet, chances are that it has a foundation that will not be easily taken down.  They are also still free…  I think that those of us who get our roots down now will be ahead of the curve.

Since most of the people I see there are not the same as who I find I Facebook, I can share the same links and post there that I share here.  That saves time and energy.  I took a break from it this fall, but now have started focusing on it more. It has taken me about 3 weeks to get people talking on my posts (because I am talking on theirs…)

    Does this help?

  • Interesting post in pratical ecommerce Google+ is not a Social Network, but a Social Layer http://goo.gl/bjUI4. I’m still trying to get my head around it. That said I did get an email from Google last week offering to spend some time over the phone to explain SM  marketing  with Google – I’ll let you know how that goes

  • @randithompson thanks….sounds like you are saying we can do  both…but  start with  a personal profile…. i  am most interested in  business and   maybe a vintage  community..

im  getting interested in this  but  not  excited….i will  get   real interested   IF and when     i  can   see  any  in my world using it… thats  the  bad part…they just arent there  yet   as  far  as i  can see…and i have talked to a lot of people….

  • @annfurnivall  They are there, the trick is to find them, or create a way where they can find you.  Have you done any searches yet?  Many of those in the smaller niches (mine included) are not sure how to connect or find each other.  This might be the opportunity you need to become the authority in your field!  It will take a little time and effort, but why not?  If you are posting on FB, you can also share it there.  Well, at least that is my theory.

I am adding the communties I have started to my posts. They are slowly building and people are starting to interact.  I think people will like the way that communites let them get to know more of the other people/business that are on Google+

    Randi

  • I started on Google+ with a personal profile to get a feel for how it works. I now have added my business page and post from both, actually more from the business page than the personal.

  • @randithompson i did a little  tonight…and  can see the learning  curve wont be  easy for me……   i  network with so many in my field and have  heard  nothing….but  maybe it will be some new folks… i registered my  ideal  community too…empty  ….

i m not after  becoming an authority in  my field…if it hasnt happened yet  it  probably  wont…..lol… but i would love   more   connections with   people who  share my love  for the  antique/junk/vintage  worled… …
