In September, a news story from Michigan made its way around the Internet. A high school sophomore, Whitney Kroop, was nominated to the homecoming court at her school as a joke, because she was so unpopular.
The community got wind of this cruel hoax, and rallied around her.
A Facebook fan page was created in September 2012 and now has more than 145,000 likes.
In addition, local businesses donated everything so she has a great outfit.
While the page obviously addresses the problem of bullying, she says the page, “is about creating awareness, sharing triumphs, and learning empathy. While all opinions are welcome – I am requesting that the discussions remain respectful. Bullying the bullies is against everything that this page is about. Respecting each other – AND all opinions is IMPERATIVE.“
That particular post drew 2,700 likes, 188 comments and 45 shares.
Another post said, “I said the other day that I would like to see us as a society relearn respect and civility. All of this starts at home. ”
This gathered another 1,900 likes, 300 comments and 85 shares.
It tells me that if you are providing quality content that is relevant, are being passionate and staying focused on your topic, great things can happen.
And yes, they now have one more person that liked their page….
