Forcing someone to share… (10 posts)

  • Hello everyone! I’ve recently come across a 3rd party app developer named Splurgy who creates sweepstakes, offers, and coupons in app/tab. But in order for your fans to enter you can put “gates” on them forcing them to like your page, share, tweet, or follow.

    My question is, does this violate Facebook guidelines which states: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:”Table Normal”; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:”"; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”,”serif”;}Section III. E. iii: You must not condition registration or entry upon the user taking any action using any Facebook features or functionality other than liking a Page, checking in to a Place, or connecting to your app.

    Here’s how I’ve implemented it: http://www.facebook.com/HalfOffDeals#!/HalfOffDeals/app_211922635540356

    Thanks!

  • Interesting, @calebsoudry – I believe this does go against the promotional rules of Facebook if this were a contest.  You can require a Like to enter, and you can give extra entries for sharing, but according to the rules you aren’t allowed to require the share to enter.

    But looking at the promotion, it’s not an entry to win the coupon, correct?  Anyone who does those two things will get the coupon right?  In that case I think it’s ok.

  • Thank you @andrea-vahl, You are correct it is just a coupon and everyone gets it if they do those two things. As for a sweepstakes, which is an option with Splurgy, as long as you have liking as a way to enter, it’s fine to give extra entries to people who share. Thanks again, your insights are always so helpful :)

  • @andrea-vahl you’re great!!!

  • hmmm…on one hand these tactics are a sort of gray area that have been around since the days of tripod and allthweb, I mean, requiring someone to click to gain entrance to some sort of main attraction has often been misused in such ways as after the required click ten popups appear demanding clicks; at very least this is a pain. But on the other hand, if used correctly and fairly, could be a valuable asset in acquiring likes and shares provided it works.

    For example, I could use this app to giveaway a free desktop theme background for cell phones, etc. And in exchange I’d gain likes and shares.

  • But what’s to stop people from turning right around and unliking you once they get the goods and how often does that happen?

  • Very often, the challenge is maintaining the likes and the followers and not otherwise.
    Keep them interested without being annoying in your approach. Not you specifically :) am talking in general.
    @krmcgee

  • That’s good to know. So far I seem to be doing a good job maintaining the likes. Most of the people who like my page stick around. It seems the content I’m providing is keeping them interested.

    Avoiding annoying your audience is a good thing to remember, glad you mentioned it.

  • @calebsoudry just don’t overuse this idea, or FB will block it.

  • Just wanted to tell you that we actually have better prices and do not limit the traffic over at FanPageEngine.com. We have awesome new prices starting on Monday that will allow you to do even more…

    If you ever have questions we have live support on our page from 10-5 EST from our site. We have found that this is now the only way to get people to your page, but you need to work on how you target your new “fans.”
