first things first? (7 posts)

  • I am helping a friend and a church each begin a social media presence. Is facebook the first place to begin? Or, should we begin with a website, a blog or google+? Or????? something else?

  • Hi Dea,

What does your friend want to achieve?

I built a WordPress.org Website/blog for a church I used to belong to before I started doing this professionally. The site was Awesome!

I would start them off with a WordPress website with a built in blog. The website/blog should be the hub of all their social media. All social media should be linked back to the website/blog. Content is king, so blogging is essential. Then, social profiles like Google Places, Yahoo Places, Yelp, YP, CitySearch, Manta, etc. Fill out the profile completely and don’t add duplicate content in the description area. They need to make sure they go back and claim those places. (That’s the secret to Social Profiles.) Then Facebook for relationships and Google+ for SEO benefits.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Dea

I think it depends on what you want to communicate and the target  or profile of the people you want to reach.

It seems important to think more than using one channel (ex: facebook), using a set of channels to communicate in a more effective way with your followers, so your social media presence be successful. Of course you must have the time to keep these channels active.

I would say Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Blog, Google + and Linkedin are important tools to consider. I would recommend having a website to provide  more detailed information about your business or place.

If you have clear objectives it will be easier to define what you need and what not.

    Hope it helps

  • @deairby – Social media is a place for conversation and engagement, but there always needs to be a central location for more information.

I would always start with a website.  Once the website is up, then they can decide which social media site they want to start with.  I know a lot of churches who have great success with Facebook since so many of their members are already there.

They need to first define their goals and go from there.

  • @amyhallbiz Amy, not sure I understand what you mean by “don’t add duplicate content in the description area.” Thanks for all the other comments.  @lisaschulteis @fernandocortes thanks for the input…this is helping

  • i would do the following

    *  facebook (as the hub for the other platforms)
    *  a blog for content creation / seo / most of your stuff will be here (think videos from YT, audio content, articles, etc)
    *  youtube for vids
    *  twitter to get your message out there and to connect with other other people
    *  linkedin for your friends, maybe NOT the church.

your friend probably wont need a website, so the blog should suffice.  theirname.com is pretty standard and is a good thing to own anyway.

if the church hasnt got a website, do that first, possible incorporate it into the blog, though im usually dont like it that way.

    hope it helps a little.

this site will help a bit  http://www.namechk.com (it checks out names for you).

if you like, private message me and I can send you a document which I will be formalising in a matter of weeks that is designed to help people with the same requests as yours  :)

  • @dextereugenio thanks, Dexter
