FB forced like IE Fangate (9 posts)

  • Maybe this topic has been addressed but i did search had no luck in this forum.

So my Q is, are we still allowed to ask to like a page first via the fangate to be able to complete a from or how would you go about it.

My intention is to ask people to like the page and when the page switched then only will you be able to complete a entry form.

Is this against FB rules and if so then i suppose there is no use of the fangate strategy anymore or did i get it wrong?

  • @bertievg is your page having timeline? If not then you can go ahead with what you have written above but if you have timeline enabled then you’ve no chance. What you can do is, use welcome/landing page tab on your main page but do put a cover image that asks people to like your page it is against fb guidelines. If you want welcome page tab, you can put it just beneath cover photo somewhere next to photo app tab. And great thing is that now you can choose a customized image as an icon for that welcome page tab so you can use a “welcome” or “like us” image for this tab. Thanks,

  • @moinshaikh Thanks. So, no more forced like. What you are saying is to create a app/tab with image “Like Us” or Discount that will open the page with a compelling message as to why they should like the page and if you are giving something away for free via an opt in form you still can’t force them to like the page so that the form become live via the fangate strategy.

    This actually sucks!

So people can either like or don’t like and still get away with free content when completing the form.

Well i suppose you will get them via the optin form then to communicate.

    thanks anyway

  • @bertievg Thanks :)

  • @bertievg Well you can still keep special offers behind like gates, but you can’t have the like gate be your landing page. You’re stuck with your wall/timeline being the landing page. And, of course, the move is being forced as of the 30th.

So it isn’t all bad, just not good. It reminds me of the quote from Miracle Max in the Princess Bride: “It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive.”

Of course, there is no chocolate to help the miracle pill go down easier!

  • @jasonreilly

Does this mean i can still ask them to like my page to enter. In other words if i run an ad that will go directly to a specific page a which is a non fan page and ask to like the page to be eligible for the draw and after becoming a fan to complete a entry form

  • @bertievg Yes. I haven’t tested yet to see if you can directly link to a landing page from outside of Facebook, though I imagine that you can. I haven’t read anything saying you can’t. For maximum effect not only would I make sure that you link directly to the tab you want them to see, but you also put the tab into the top three tab slots you can control. This will also let you direct people from your wall.

One other thing to try: pin a post to your wall (keeps it at the top for seven days) regarding your contest/like. You will have to make sure to keep repinning it (or creating new hooks) every seven days, but if you do that, and have a direct link within the body of the comment that goes to the tab, then you’ll have as good of a fangate as you can get.

  • Yes you still can have a “fan-gate” @bertievg where they have to Like the Page first before seeing what is underneath that picture.  The big change that makse this not as effective as I think @moinshaikh was trying to point to is that there is no more Default Landing Page.  So your fan-gate will not have quite as much power, in my opinion.  Take a look at Macy’s Win a Million tab – they have a Like-gate on this entry form.  You can Like and Unlike the page to see how it works with the new Timeline.  Hope that helps!

  • @jasonreilly – thanks

@andrea-vahl – That makes sense that is how i also understand it but there is so much confusion between no call to action which in my opinion is meant for the Timeline Cover and not the tabs.
I visited Macy’s “Win A Million” but don’t see any call to action to like the page so i am not sure if what i am trying to accomplish with this search for answers if they have adopted the No Forced Like Strategy and if they also misunderstood the fan gate strategy.

I hope i can get more clarity on this issue as this is my sales pitch when convincing businesses the contest strategy to get more leads.

More feedback will be of great help and i want to thank everyone participating on this topic
