FB Business Etiquette Question (16 posts)

  • I just had someone post to our page more or less plugging her own business. She masked it as her being our newest fan and invited us to check out her page as well. How do you handle this? Just leave it (which is what I do if a post is harmless or at least doesn’t merit response)? Or delete it (which I kind of feel like doing because it really has nothing to do with us except we’re both jewelry-related)? My gut instinct is that it’s in poor taste to plug your business on another’s business page when you’re not affiliated at all and haven’t sought permission before hand.

  • I agree it is in poor taste, but I would leave it and keep a watch on future posts.  You don’t want them to end up flaming you or posting something even worse.   Your fans are pretty smart - most will feel it is in bad taste too and steer away from them.

  •  Has your business page switched to timeline yet? If so, minimize it. if not…  you are probably working on it anyway.  I feel it is poor to just spam on someone else’s page – especially if it is a direct competitor.

  • Agree completely!  This drives me crazy.  If someone wants to post on my page a comment that is actually relevant, then they are welcome to do so.  To post an announcement or plug about their site if it is not relevant is simply spamming.

My suggestion would be to remove it and send her a private message noting that you appreciate her following you but that you strictly limit what is being posted on your wall.

  • i had  this happen a  bit this  yr….at  first  i deleted   the posts when i caught  them……but  they  did it so much i  had  to ban  them  from my page…

  • @rowenafinn Hi Rowena

    Two choices:

    1. Delete it and email the business (via their website and ask nicely for them not to do it again).

    2. Leave a witty comment under their post.

I usually go with number 1, but number 2 can be fun sometimes too. :)

  • Some people do this to create links back to their page. This helps the ratings with search engines. I leave them on my page and rest assured as soon as I’m ready to start promoting my page I’ll be going to theirs to place my own.

  • I think if you have a Facebook policy in place, @rowenafinn then it makes it easy to say what you delete and what you don’t.  The post will soon disappear from the visible area if you are posting often and probably hardly any one will see it.

  • @rowenafinn Considering what you think about someone posting kind of inappropriate messages to your wall is the one side – the other side is to think about what your fans and “real” clients who feel comfortable with your fb page think. It is this consideration that makes me delete those posts. Your fb page is your business and you work hard to maintain a certain atmosphere and self understanding. Your clients like that, it is what makes them interact with your fb page. Spam posts can seriously damage this relation.

  • I have this statement in my info section:

Don’t post anything that isn’t yours to post. Sharing an appropriate golf-related link to an approved site (USGA, GAM, ETC) is fine. If you would like to submit a link, look in our list of ‘Likes’ to see if we approve the site. If not, please message the page owner directly (Dedi Mason) before you post the link. DO NOT post others’ thoughts/quotes as your own (notice that we do post quotes about the game ~ but we always name the original source).

It gives me free reign to delete any links that I don’t think benefit my customers.

  • Thanks, everyone! Much appreciated and definitely helpful. :)

  • @rowenafinn Well, #1, not many are going to see someone else’s post on your page because it won’t be in their newsfeed. They will only see if it they come to your wall. And #2, I would hide it, if it’s not already hidden. Sometimes you see it, but others can’t because it’s actually under Hidden posts.

Otherwise, I have no problem deleting posts like that.

  • In my opinion, if they are posting about their business in any way that could be detrimental to your business, Ban Them. They know better. If they truly wanted to post for any other reason they would use their persona account. Ban Them quickly and put a stop to it. It won’t get better on it’s own.

This is Your page for Your business that affects Your living. If you owned an brick and mortar store and they came to your foyer advertising theirs, you would run them off.

  • Only happens to our page when people from this community like it…Definitely in poor taste. We will see the notification when you like us and like your page back if it is worthwhile. :)

  • I agree..its poor taste….I have been bombarded the past few days with people inside a (group), for some reason they think its okay to spam on my 2 pages about their services……..I delete them and send them and send them a message that says its great to connect with them and I will become a fan in return, but really…:~}GIgi
