Facebook’s Scheduler Vs. 3rd Party SM Dashboards (24 posts)

  • Hey everyone,

Just wanted to get your thoughts on whether you use Facebook’s scheduling feature ir 3rd party social media management tools like Hootsuite or tweet deck to manage your posts.

Personally I use the Facebook scheduler and have shied away from Hootsuite for scheduling and posting updates.  I heard from a few sources that it limits the reach of the post.  What are your thoughts?

  • @craigdesmarais  I use the Facebook scheduler also.  Figured there would be less problems with things like compatibility and the ease of scheduling.  Will definitely be interested to see if other posters use something else that has features that outweigh the “in house” Facebook benefits!

  • @kimkline I agree Facebook created this for a reason so it probably has a greater reach than other 3rd party apps.  I am liking it so far.

  • @craigdesmarais I also use the Facebook scheduler and I like it.

  • @dianebianchi Yeah they did a good job with it.  One thing I wish they added was a calendar view.  I think that would make it a little easier to schedule it further in advance so you don’t have to look at a calendar for the date.

  • FB scheduler is great but it places all images you schedule into a “photo” album. This means that any description you add to the image will not show and it will be posted as an “addition” to that album.

So it’s fantastic for sharing links but awful for images. NOT COOL FACEBOOK! Grrr!

  • @craigdesmarais Yes, a calendar would certainly help.  I usually have a calendar in front of me when I do it, so it’s not so bad for me.

  • I’ve really been enjoying the Facebook scheduler too.  One thing I also noticed though is on a couple of accounts I have Facebook automatically tweet out the post – I still think it’s valuable in some cases to have a little cross promotion.  But when I schedule the post, it doesn’t automatically tweet.

  • @jamesalonso yeah they still have to work a lot of stuff out but as always they will come through.

@dianebianchi yeah I usually have Hootsuite open or iCal.  Hopefully they are working on that.

  • What is this FB Scheduler you all speak of? Haven’t heard of it. Of course, I didn’t hear about being able to edit posts there either until about a week ago, when it finally hit my account and I found it by accident.

  • @craigdesmarais I use the Facebook scheduler. One of the reasons is that Mari Smith always notes that direct posts place better in EdgeRank than the 3rd party posts.

@jamesalonso Thanks for the heads up. I did notice that my photos go into the album but never checked descriptions.

I want scheduler to be available on shares! For now I must copy and past the curated content.

@angel-graham SME’s weekly wrap blog by Cindy King should keep you informed :) Also get on Mari Smith’s email list for Facebook updates.

  • @kc_kreative yeah, thats where I heard it too.  I trust Mari’s judgement that’s why I have shied away from using hootsuite to schedule FB posts.

  • @kc_kreative It’s my pleasure. Descriptions show up fine in the images when you go to the album and click on them. The problem is that they don’t show on your fan’s streams. It just shows as an additional image to the album.

If anyone is seeing something different, please let us know. Facebook scheduler is a very promising tool, just needs some adjusting.

  • @craigdesmarais  @angel-graham, I had not heard of the FB schedule either. I had stopped using Hootsuite simply because it would say that it was delivered by Hootsuite and my client didn’t want it to look automated. I didn’t realize that it also took away from the edgerank score. I would start using the FB scheduler, but if it’s terrible for posting images, that won’t work…that’s pretty much all I post. Hmmm, where’s the perfect solution that doesn’t appear automated, posts at the peak times of the day, works well with images, and cooperates with edgerank to increase reach?

  • Hi Guys! Good info here. I fell in love with the Facebook scheduler but @Andrea did not know it doesn’t Tweet out. I have some accounts set up to automatically Tweet. Big believer in cross-promotion.

BUT I also want to get clients and myself going on Google and hated that is was such a manual posting network. Did you know Hootsuite now posts to Google+ as well? So, I’m back in love with Hootsuite where I can scheduled at least one automatic post to each Google+, Facebook page and Twitter account a day. The rest I do manually as time and priorities allow.

    Thoughts?

  • @michellefontaine, I’ve noticed that when using Hootsuite for Google+, the image that is normally shown when sharing a link is not displayed on the post. You are also unable to tag pages which is an integral part of any sharing you may do. Hashtags do work though. Hootsuite also doesn’t allow you to post images to Google+ and Facebook. So far, Hootsuite will only allow you to post images to Twitter.

If anyone has experienced something different, please let me know. I use the paid version of Hootsuite so I don’t believe it has anything to do with the free service they offer.

    Thanks!

  • @jamesalonso My photos and links to articles with photos show up in my stream okay. I just checked with a photo that I posted yesterday to the page. The “Thinking Hats” appears in my personal stream along with the text I wrote and the shares / likes…

  • @kc_kreative What platform are you referring to, Google+ or Facebook? Could you provide a link to the post so that we may see it?

    Thanks. :)

  • @jamesalonso Facebook. Here’s what the page post looks like in my news feed.

    Thinking Hats

    Sorry that I can’t upload a screenshot!

  • Thanks for showing me the link, @kc_kreative. The link you sent takes you directly to the actual post and not the news feed but I was able to locate the post on your page. Even though the image was added to the “photo” album, as all scheduled image posts via Facebook have been, it shows on your page as an individual post and not an addition to the album.

In Facebook, when you have an album already created and you add an image to it, it shows on your fans stream as “AHAA – The Voice of Hispanic Marketing has added a picture to ____ album.” Hence, when scheduling posts with images, the images shows on your fans news feed as “AHAA – The Voice of Hispanic Marketing has added an image to the Photo album.” When this occurs, the description you write on the image is omitted by Facebook because the message your fans see on their news feed is that “you added an image to the Photo album.” Once the click on the image, they are able to see the description.
I am seeing that this didn’t happen here. On your page, the image you scheduled shows up like you did it manually, yet the image is still located in the Photo album. Very odd. I discussed this with @andrea-vahl not too long ago and we came to the conclusion that the scheduler is still a little buggy. Andrea, if you have an opportunity, could you take a look at this image shared by Kristy? Maybe you can provide some clarity to the madness. Thanks!

  • @jamesalonso Gotcha. So if I added another photo to our conference album, it wouldn’t show up in the stream…

FB scheduler is now working fine for me. For a number of weeks I was unable to view my queue so Post-It Notes were my friends for keeping track. Still need a mobile admin app / access however.

  • I haven’t tried Facebook scheduler. Might give it a go from the comments here though.

I don’t find TweetDeck and HootSuite particularly great. TweetDeck seems unreliable and doesn’t want to send scheduled tweets or updates when not logged in and HootSuite I just don’t like the interface. And that you have to pay for scheduling.

Have just started using Buffer which I really like so far. Has anyone tried it? The free version only allows you 10 scheduled updates and a limited number of accounts and users but I find the interface really nice to use and intuitive and the stats the same. They’ve also got great plug ins for chrome and firefox to post stuff from the net straight into your schedule (or immediately). It’s definitely worth a look http://bufferapp.com/r/d6298

  • I actually prefer the Facebook scheduler over Hootsuite as it gives me a better representation of what the post will actually look like in Facebook, which is important to me since Facebook users are much more visual than other social networks. But I have noticed that at times my “activity log” was not visible so I almost felt like I was posting blind.

  • Finally figured out the FB scheduler. Now, to see how my test post goes.
