Facebook Timeline Rolled Out for All Today! (29 posts)

Topic tags: facebook timeline
  • So, I’ve had the Facebook Timeline set up for awhile now, but today they finally rolled it out to all users. I happen to love it but would love to know what new users think of the Facebook Timeline…

How do you like the design? Do you find it intuitive to use? Do you see any added benefit? If so, what? Give me your thoughts!!

  • @joancrocker I am using the timeline for few weeks already. I really like the design and the structure of it but must say that other than my own timeline I am not spending too much time on my friends timelines or personal pages, I tend to get updates from the news feed anyway and the new timeline didn’t change this habit of mine. The biggest benefit if you ask me is only design wise, I really like the cover picture option, other than that I can’t find any significant benefit in comparison to the old personal page.

  • I just got it today and fumbled around at first but now I think I’ve figured it out.  I think it looks nicer but it’s a little less obvious or easy to follow.  Could be just because I’m so used to the old!  When I opened up my friend’s page it was information overload and I wasn’t sure what to look at first.

I think in time we’ll all be so used to it – folks will forget about the old format!

  • @joancrocker I haven’t gone live with mine yet, but have been playing with it and believe I’ll like it.
It’s easier to go back to recent stories and make updates – that’s one benefit.
One tip to share is the Cover picture is ideally 850 x 315 pixels.
To learn more about the functionality, there is a series of short instructional videos at Grovo

  • Just letting everyone know that Facebook iPhone app update is out that will view Timeline from your phone with ease! iPad app update to be released soon.

  • @luciebcus I agree, it takes a minute to get used to the new design, however since I switched over so long ago, when I would look at the old profile, I forget how to use that. So, you will get used to it like it never changed :)

@jeff-korhan Great tips on the cover picture and video!

  • I just added the option over the weekend. Still deciding whether I like or not. Somehow, I like Facebook mobile better and use it more.

  • I’m hearing that the new Timeline will be converting everyone over by Dec 21st. is this correct? Also I see where you Jeff, @jeff-korhan mention that the dimensions need to be 850 X315. How has FB been converting images that don’t fit those dimensions?

  • where do I find the timeline thing? how and why use it? @luciebcus @joancrocker @susanavello

  • @blairevanball  Facebook is going live Christmas Day. It is going to be fun to watch the uproar as most of the 800 million users get an unexpected Christmas present!
Those dimensions for ideal cover picture size are correct.  However, I found if you upload a large image they allow you to adjust it vertically.
@deairby You can find Timeline here: https://www.facebook.com/about/timeline
See Grovo video tutorials above for how to use it.  The answer to why is you won’t have a choice as of December 25th.

  • @deairby  I’m not an expert but I was checking out a friends page who had timeline and box in the lower right hand corner asked me if I wanted to convert.  I would imagine soon if not already on your page at the top where messages from facebook are displayed this option would exist too.  The one thing I didn’t realize is once you click yes to check it out- you can’t go back to the old!  But it’s all good :)  Hope that helps!!

  • @joancrocker Now I love the new Timeline. Used it for a while now. Took a little bit to get used too. But when you get used to it then it is really streamlined.

I think Facebook eventually will convert Fan pages also to a similar concept.

Thanks @jeff-korhan for the dimension tip. Have to do some minor adjustments for mine.

    Cheers..

  • @jeff-korhan. Thanks for the info on Timeline. Should be a day filled with some angst.

  • @aremorch oooh, I know, I can’t wait for some changes to the Business Pages, I think Timeline would be awesome, however I worry what would happen to all the hard work on welcome pages, tabs etc. I’m guessing they are planning something big for pages.

  • @joancrocker I am very excited. Actually I think lately with Google+ Pages, Twitter new brand profile and now Facebook Timeline we will now see the major shift for brands starting to fully apply Social Media into their marketing strategies.

I don’t worry to much about changes to the Welcome tab. Challenges brings on new opportunities. But I agree with you I am also confident that Facebook plan something big for their Fan Pages.

    Cheers..

  • @jeffkorhan Thanks for the link to Facebook timeline.

  • I still don’t have it, but glad to have this information so I can be ready.

  • @jeff-korhan

Can you (or anyone else) point me in the direction of where you heard Timeline would roll out as mandatory on Christmas Day? I’ve noticed Facebook’s pattern of rolling out big changes to the platform on/right around major holidays, so I wouldn’t be surprised. Interested to read more on this.

    @joancrocker  and others interested:

Just an FYI for those that have already updated to Timeline, you may want to check your personal Profile privacy settings too. We tested a few accounts for those that manage Facebook Pages for businesses and their privacy setting DID NOT transfer with the switch so they were sharing content publicly and were not aware of it. They actually had to go in and manually tighten their privacy settings again to ensure old photos, posts, personal info, etc…. were not being shared publicly.

  • @kristinawing You only see that after you accept Facebook’s invite to try out Timeline.  Here’s a link to a screenshot from my Timeline preview:
BTW,  I would recommend anyone to do the preview because even though it is not public, you still operate from that interface. I’m personally finding it to be much easier to work with than the old format.

  • @kristinawing One more thing.
I just realized it was 7 days before Dec 25th that I started my Timeline trial. So, it’s entirely possible that is the reason for the aforementioned deadline.
That makes sense to me as I imagine it would overload FB’s servers if we all migrated at once.

  • @jeff-korhan  Thanks for the fast response Jeff!

Yes I saw that they give you a “7 day headstart” to customize before it goes live for those that upgrade early. I’m interested to see what their set date is to roll it out over the entire platform. I’m concerned mostly about the privacy settings needing to be adjusted for our clients and their staff during that 7 day turnaround so that they can keep personal activities on Facebook apart from business activities. I think your advice to “preview” from the point of view of your visitors is key.

    Happy Holidays!

  • @joancrocker

I agree that Change is necessary, but for those shy guys who wanna keep their secrets a secret to outer world, fb timeline might miss something, no doubts timeline has also all the privacy features, but when it comes to historic data, it messes up with privacy setting, i mean if you’ve recently hidden all your wall posts and happenings from non-friends using privacy tab, and u start timeline, it’ ll show everything :(

  • I think the new Timeline is pretty nice, and I really love the big photo across the top. The only thing that I’m not a big fan of is the two column layout. The content boxes don’t line up, so trying to see all the posts on a person’s page, I find my eyes jumping around too much instead of easily scrolling through. What’s everyone’s thoughts on that?

  • I tested the Timeline since about October this year, and I was perfectly fine with it from the very beginning. I do agree that content is now scattered everywhere and its a bit harder to find, but otherwise it gives one a good overview about a different person. I am more curious about how people react to automatically publishing activity such as music they listen to, articles they read etc. What does everyone think about that?

  • I’m surprised so many people like it! I really don’t like how easy it is for people to access what I posted years ago. Now I’m starting to get my career started I don’t want people to see what embarrassing TV shows I was watching when I was 16. Plus I was in a bad long term relationship and it’s so easy for people to go see all that. My Facebook is just very unprofessional now even though for the last year or so. Considering deleting my account and starting fresh.

  • OK, I must have been under a rock lately. Didn’t notice the Timeline deadlines at all. Thanks for the tips, links, etc. I’ll go check mine out now.

  • I’m previewing it now.  Have not checked my privacy setting so I’m going there now to see if they are they way I want.  Thanks for the heads up.

  • I just started using Timeline recently.  I really like the layout and find it much more visually appealing.  Thankfully I haven’t posted a lot of embarrassing content in the past so I have nothing to worry about people finding.

  • Really enjoying Timeline, although the new presentation of posts takes a little getting used to, doesn’t it?!

I like the “About” page, because I think it looks more ‘organized,’ easier to read.

RE: past years posts, Facebook has provided the ability to go back in and edit, delete and ‘hide from Timeline’ posts, pictures, etc. I found this feature to be a little quirky, have you?

Adding to observations here: Noted yesterday that NetworkedBlogs is having issues with Timeline, causing blog posts to not appear on profiles using Timeline. (‘known issue’) FYI

Hopefully this situation will be rectified as it affects many folks. However, in my observation and with FB edge rank, etc it appears Facebook favors manual posting over any ‘automatic’ means, including syndication via an app like NetworkedBlogs, so I wonder if this is a harbinger of things to come… What do you think?
