Facebook timeline question (15 posts)

  • Is Facebook going eventually switch all users to the Timeline model?  What  do you think of Timeline?

  • Yes, I believe they will, but I haven’t heard a specific date. I actually like the new timeline profile, but you do have to make sure you have your privacy set if you don’t want all to see every post you have made of Facebook. When you make the switch you get 7 days to get it setup the way you want before it goes live.

  • Wonder how forcing people to use the timeline corresponds to their promise to make everything opt-in?

  • I believe their goal is to get everyone to the timeline, but like Dan, I don’t know how soon, but I kinda like the format as well.

All they are really doing is changing the way personal profiles display. It allows more of a “progressive diary” of events in a person’s life.

For example, I like the way you can post a pic from 20 years ago, and slot it into the proper place on the timeline, instead of just throwing it into an album and letting everyone guess where/when it was from.

I took a pic of me from HS, a pic of the car I drove back then, and a song and posted them all into that particular year. Now, when someone scrolls down my timeline, they have a snapshot of what was happening in my world back then.

    @trudy @danhoward @michellefontaine @michellefontaine

  • Everybody will definitely have the timeline – just like everybody will have the new Twitter platform – it just takes a while to roll them all out I suppose.

Personally, I love the new Timeline! The pictures at the top, and all the creative things you can do with it, and as @warrenveach said, the “progressive diary” is so personal and fun!
I hope that they think of something similar for our Fan Pages!!

  • Yes, @trudy – the Timeline should be rolled out shortly.  You can get it now by going to  http://www.facebook.com/about/timeline and in the lower right corner I believe there is a Get it now button (it doesn’t show for me because I already have it)

  • If you already have the new Facebook Timeline can you rearrange some of the blocks differently?

  • @trudy I personally really like the timeline. Initially I was wary since it made me discover how much information Facebook has on me (Began using my personal profile when it was still “theFacebook.com”) but soon I embraced how neat it is to take a walk down memory lane through the timeline. I would recommend following  @andrea-vahl instruction on activating your timeline.

@andrea-vahl do you know anything about how business pages might be affected by timelines? Will there be different capabilities and postings for business?

  • @trudy definitely they will be going with timeline for everyone, but don’t know by when, also i have been reading lot about timeline for page being launched soon once timeline for profile is rolled out completely. @michellefontaine i am also wondered and somewhat disappointed at compulsory roll out of timeline, i mean if they really call facebook a social and individual’s place why should they implement it to those who really don’t like it. Anyway, change is the only permanent thing!@cynthiacosco you can definitely re arrange blocks and yes, you can decide what blocks to show to public and which not before you make it live. At the moment, fb allows 7 days to user to re arrange the blocks, after 7 days, the timeline in the current stat is made live (published), if you are confident about everything and you don’t feel any further change to be made, you can publish it/make it live even before 7 days, by clicking on green publish button any time before 7 days, and your timeline will be live!

  • So timeline will be going live on the 30th March for everyone. Here are some brand pages that have already made the change:

    https://www.facebook.com/Tiffany
    https://www.facebook.com/cocacola
    https://www.facebook.com/benjerry

Have you made the change yet? I am so far still getting things together in order to make the transition. I have to admit, I do quite like Timeline, it can make things a lot more personal and you can include the brand history. You can also rearrange thing so important bits are at the top etc.

One thing I am unsure about though is will there still be a landing tab? Does anyone know of any tutorials in order to make a good landing page/home page for Facebook?

    Fiona

  • Hi @fiona- unfortunately there won’t be landing tabs any more.

You Can however, still have your apps and link to their URLs directly from your website or blog. You’ll also be able to create a call to action post which you can ‘PIN’ to the top of your page for about 7 days I believe.

    Hope this helps,

  • Thanks Alexandra!

  • I People, we created a guide on how to promote yourself when you switch to the new timeline: http://www.antavo.com/en/facebook/run-promotions-on-the-new-timeline-page
We published our Page already, plus, we made some changes in our promotion builder, so you can try promotion building if you want.

  • I just ran across this great article on making the changeshttp://www.hyperarts.com/blog/facebook-timeline-for-fan-pages-frequently-asked-questions/

  • @Trudy Timeline will be effective for ALL Business Pages by March 30th.
Here is a detailed post of all the changes. http://www.prepare1.com/facebook-rolls-timeline-business-pages/

What’s everyone’s take on doing away with ALL Landing Pages?
