  • You can run, but you can’t hide. Facebook’s biggest user interface overhaul since the Wall, the Facebook Timeline, is now becoming mandatory for all users.

Time is running out so get going on cleaning up your old posts!

  • @rlmosca I saw the articles yesterday. I guess I need to put it on my to-do list for the weekend…

It was my understanding that you did not have to delete unsavory images but would have to go in one-by-one to change the settings. Let me know if that isn’t the case so I can go through my albums. Oh, and if you have your FB account “private” will the timeline still show up to outsiders?

    Thanks!

  • @kc_kreative “It was my understanding that you did not have to delete unsavory images but would have to go in one-by-one to change the settings”
That is correct, you just click do not include in timeline.

Oh, and if you have your FB account “private” will the timeline still show up to outsiders?
I believe that is the case but I recommend leaving it private but setting it up as if anyone can view it just to protect yourself!

  • @rlmosca @kc_kreative When I switched my personal Facebook over to the timeline I was able to retroactively update previous post privacy settings as a whole in my privacy menu. It does mean that anyone that you may have additionally shared with previously loses access to those postings when you group change but for me it was worth it.

In using the timeline I have found that some of my default sharing settings are changed and on maps the default keeps going to “public” so those may be ones to be cautious of. I changed many photo albums to viewable by “only me” a while back if they were many years ago just to play it safe. I also implemented the “approve tags” feature so I am notified and must approve a tag before it posts.

  • @alexandrabriggs Thanks for sharing!

  • For @rlmosca and anyone else who is interested:

Read this article on TechCrunch (1/24/12) that says “According to [Facebook], over the next few weeks, everyone will get the new Timeline.” The 7 day turnaround to adjust your settings and organize your Profile still applies.

Thought I’d share as we’re recommending our Facebook Page admins comply now and take the necessary time to review their new Timeline to make sure it is set up to be secure so that personal information does not become public. In the event Facebook forces the update upon them early and privacy settings revert back to default to “everyone” we wanted them to be proactive. (We’ve seen this happen twice already.)

  • @alexandrabriggs Thanks for the info. I think most of my photos are for friends only. I don’t have anything terrible uploaded but some family stuff I want to keep private. Most are horse photos from when I judge.

I do have the “approve tags” setting as well.

  • Thanks for heads up.

  • I chose to go with the timeline as soon as it was released since it was coming anyway. Haven’t taken time to really double check it, thanks for the reminder. @rlmosca

  • that’s weird,my personal page I changed but my business page did not change when I thought everyone’s got changed  @rlmosca @alexandrabriggs

  • @deairby Business/Fan Pages have not started on the timelines (yet). There is another topic posting in the forum questioning when the timeline might hit the pages. I refer to my “Personal” facebook as one that I don’t conduct any work from. It has been active since college and when my professional life started integrating social media I created a second account that links through my work email to have all pages set up.

  • @rlmoscaI I am not looking forward to this. I like my wall!!!!

  • @alexandrabriggs I’ll have to think about creating another personal page when I get my business site up and running. Though I could create a business page at that point :)
